The Illini held a team meeting -

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/college/ct-spt-0126-illinois-hoops--20100125,0,7691827.story

Hopefully, growing some and playing aggressively was a big part of meeting. If Mike Davis and Company come out playing balls to the walls Penn State doesn't stand a chance Wednesday.

That's what's so frustrating. If this team played balls to the wall all year, we'd have 1 loss.

Against ISU, I thought KU did get away with some fouls.

they probably just went out there hacking since iowa state can't make free throws. also, you might as well pressure garrett since he's the worst point guard in the country.

To be clear, I don't think the disparity was that significant. We did benefit from some calls. In the end, it didn't matter.

I also wonder if the crowd at Hilton turns some refs against them. The boo a LOT. Like every marginal call gets a symphony of boos.

i agree, it obviously didn't matter.

the one that set the crowd off was the one where aldrich went up after a lob to gilstrap (?) and just rode him to the ground out of bounds. after that, the crowd was on the refs for everything. then iowa state had a spurt of like three ticky tack fouls called against them in the second half over the span of like four possessions.

i didn't think the game was very well officiated period.

also, iowa state fans are very frustrated right now as this was supposed to be a tournament team. they have two top 50 nba picks and will probably finish like 9th in the big 12.

That strategy works just fine for Purdue's student section.

And Purdue's point guard come to think of it.

honestly, it sounds like sour grapes to me.

Heard this on the radio. In his career Aldrich has fouled out one time. For a guy who is always trying to block shots that's a very low number. Collins has never fouled out of a game. For two very good defenders that is pretty much impossible to have happen. FWLIW

They are good defenders. That's a big part of why they don't foul out. They position themselves well and understand the game. Also, they're usually on deep enough teams where, if they are racking up the fouls, they can sit for an extended amount of time. Most teams can't sit a star player. Kansas usually has the talent to have someone step in.

Missouri bumps, hand checks, slaps, reaches in, and hacks ALL THE TIME. I'd say most pressing teams do. Refs, for whatever reason, just don't call every foul on them. There were a couple of plays in the first half where X got obliterated with no foul called.

And I'm sure, overall, KU gets more calls then most teams, especially in AFH. But we plain rolled Mizzou last night, and it had nothing to do with calls.

ETA: We had two more team fouls last night. At home. Against a team that bricked jumpers all night long.

Agreed, Earl Hebner head WWE referee wouldn't have been able to keep Mizzou in that game.

I've been underwhelmed by the officiating in a lot of the games I've seen. It seems like there are a lot new faces in stripes this year, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But these guys haven't been calling great games.

It seems to get worse every year. Or at the very least, a whole lot less consistent. I mean, if one team is drawing blood on defense and not getting called for it, at least let the other team do the same. It seems I've watch a number of games this year where a guy gets destroyed going to the hole with no call on one end and then a hand check 40 feet from the basket gets called on the next possession on the other end of the court.

Thank God the Cats make up for a loss to OSU at home with a WIN at Baylor! Should be still fighting for the Big 12, but losing at home to OSU killed them!

Northwestern is about to drop a tough one at Minnesota. According to the bracket matrix, NW is the 2nd team out of the tourney and Minnesota is the 4th team out. You need to beat the teams closest to you.

Haha, dude on Kentucky missed a breakaway dunk.

Both teams played like horsecrap tonight. The difference was their depth and our exhaustion. And a few inexplicable non-calls in Minnesota's favor.

NW certainly had their chances at the end between the possession that ended with 15 seconds left, and not being able to get the rebound on the Minnesota missed FT. Frustrating to see.

Ball State beat Miami (OH) for the first time in six years tonight in 2 overtimes to get back to .500 overall and in league play.

On a much more important note, this South Carolina game is nuts.

Hoffarber hitting 2 quick 3s and then an uncontested Minnesota fast break layup after Thompson was demolished by a Golden Gopher put them in too deep of a hole. Playing 25 minutes of finding new ways to get your shot blocked with stupid drives into traffic didn't help, either.

That was their second to last chance at a good conference road win. I don't envision a close game in East Lansing, so hopefully NC State finishes the year strong or they win in Wisconsin.

I've been watching Downey for 3 years and he always reminds me of a poor man's Allen Iverson. He dominates the ball, he's smaller than everyone on the court by a few inches, he's not terribly efficient usually but he's so much fun to watch. He gets to spots he has no business in and knocks down crazy ill-advised shots.
