Was 1940 a Helms title?

Tourney started in the last 30s I believe. I know they have 5 "legit" titles

First tournament was 1939. IU has five real titles and didn't (evidently) retroactively make a contemporary trophy for themselves of a fictitious championship (not an Illinois dig, just so there is no confusion).

I don't think we even made a trophy, we didn't hang a banner. I don't think anyways.

I have no idea. As I said, I wasn't talking about Illinois; I was talking about the "trophy" of Purdue's posted in this thread.

So I guess the question becomes, how do we get this kind of effort from the team in both halves. I'm willing to accept that random chance allows for a terrible half followed by a great half (or vice-versa), but this seems to be a clear pattern. It's not just guys missing jumpers, it's not just some bad bounces, it's a complete lack of defensive intensity, and no real flow to the offense. Then it's as if they just flip a switch and they play like a Big Ten title contender.

Any ideas what's going on here?

Get them some hookers before the game to wake them up.

MJ should be able to help with that. Although that might be a violation.

he could just send his son a little extra allowance, or a lot extra. would it be a violation if a player entertains teammates and recruits with his own money?

13 minutes from tipoff in the Kansas/Tennessee game in Knoxville. Oddly enough, I have a decent feeling about this one.

This is exactly the type of undermanned team that Pearl tends to coach well. He has struggled coaching supremely talented teams, but gets an awful lot out of teams that are overmatched. Not saying that is what we'll definitely see today, but a UT upset just would not surprise me.

That said, I'm calling it KU 79 TN 63.

My goodness we needed that one. Apparently it took a 17 point deficit to get this team to remember how to play basketball. The 2nd half was by far the best the defense has looked in about 3-4 weeks.

yeah, as far as i'm concerned, illinois has no national titles. the cubs have no ws titles in over 100 years, the bears haven't won a super bowl in 25+, the blackhawks haven't won a stanley cup in almost 50 and the bulls have won 1 playoff series in 11.

show me a person who has a worse sports life.

Not a bad pregame assessment... sans the final score.

This means Texas will probably lose this week. They have never liked being #1 for more than a week the few times it has happened this decade. UConn is two weeks away so it could happen then.

Well this is a good consolation to losing yesterday. Not only does another undefeated down but that non-conference win against Tennessee looks even better.

this KU team won't win it all unless they get a lot better. Very disappointing performance.

5 shots for Aldrich. 5 shots. Against a team without a center.

Yeah, like it or not, Pearl absolutely outcoached Self today. Aldrich was primarily defended by a skinny true frosh today, due to Chism's foul trouble. No excuse for Cole only getting off 5 shots. Thought too much of Kansas' game plan involved Collins taking 18-23 footers.

I bet Self isn't happy about Aldrich not touching the ball, too. That's two games in a row where KU had 5-6 players simply not show up. I thought after the cornell near miss this team would be more focused.

keep it up through the 25th plz.

not that i think we have any chance due to our overall shittiness on the road, but man it'd be nice to win at Allen once before i die

Big, big win. Crawford made some rookie mistakes, but he showed today that he really can be something special down the line.

Oregon State followed up it's 51 point home loss to Seattle by knocking off the last undefeated Pac 10 team, 2-0 Oregon, 64-57 on the road. This year's Pac 10 might be worse than last year's SEC. And I know Oregon likes to be crazy and different with their jersey's, but yellow lettering on identically yellow jerseys is just dumb.

Jerry Wainwright is apparently out as DePaul coach.

Not to put too much pressure on Jean Lenti Ponsetto, but this next coach selection will likely decide the fate of the DePaul athletic program. Their contract with the Big East ends with the 2014-2015 season and if they continue to be putrid, they will likely get kicked out and replaced, likely ending in the Atlantic 10 or Horizon League, likely costing the university millions in revenue and likely eliminating more sports from their already pretty thin athletic program budget.

Kudos to her for finally standing up for the tradition of the program and ending this clown's reign. Now hopefully some alumni will pony up some money for a real coach because the money wasn't even there to buy him out last year even though she tried.

Fans love Daniel Moore: Walk on, getting minutes, (being white)

IU fans don't really like Moore much at all. Though he did OK tonight.

I hate Daniel Moore with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, but I do think many IU fans like him largely because of the things SSR said (though they wouldn't admit the last one, of course). It's probably part of why I dislike him so much. I argue with my dad about this all the time. The justification is always some garbage about how he gives them a spark followed by something stupid like: "What do you expect? He's a little white guy and a walk-on." Hmmmm...I guess I expect to not have to watch untalented (relatively) walk-ons who can do nothing but dribble around and take the occasional flop when I watch an Indiana basketball game. Call me crazy. I will acknowlege he actually wasn't terrible in this game though.

Anyway, nice come back for Illinois. I didn't expect IU to win going in but it was pretty disappointing the way they folded in the second half. Why can't Elston get minutes all of the sudden? Pritchard is garbage at this point.

So we're clear, that was a quote from the announcer except for the "being white"

And our fanbase doesn't really have the moral highground on these things, I couldn't believe there were people on Illinois board praising Bill Cole's play on Saturday. Dude was garbage, but since he dives on the floor 3 times a game people love him. Cole's improved a lot since last year, actually being able to occassionally defend(though certainly not on Saturday), but he needs to be the 5th wing in our rotation.

There are absolutely IU fans that like Moore (and others) because they are white. There are racists in every fan base, and Indiana is certainly no exception -- IU's fanbase isn't the worst in this regard, but it's certainly not the best either. (Rooting for walk-ons is not unique to IU though.)

I commented mainly more on "IU fans love Moore." I can tell you there is often a palpable groan at Assembly Hall when he comes in the game, along with some cheers. I've sat in the student section a couple times this year and they think Moore sucks. They don't like him, or when he plays, one bit. I generally don't like to see him get meaningful minutes, but, unfortunately with Creek and Roth hurt, he's IU's fifth best guard. And when you play three guards at all times, the fifth is going to get minutes.

Like you, I cannot understand Elston's lack of playing time whatsoever. It makes me rather perplexed and furious. He's IU's second-best athlete behind Rivers, easily the most athletic bigger player, the most active, the best rebounder, a good outside shooter, etc., and players that play above him are mostly incompetent. I won't go down the line statistically as this isn't an IU board, but he trails only Jordan Hulls in offensive efficiency per Pomeroy among healthy players (obviously Creek was tops). Elston had more rebounds Saturday night in 10 minutes than Capobianco and Pritchard had combined in 40 minutes. He's struggled defensively -- which does nothing to differentiate him from really any other Hoosier -- but there is no on-court excuse for his lack of playing time.

Saturday 1/16 works for me.

Is Elston undersized? IU's strategy seemed to be to get physical with our bigs, which is why I assumed Capobianco started. This doesn't explain previous games, but that seems to be the prevailing thought on Illinois boards.

Illini should be able to get to 4-0 in the Big Ten this week before the hammer drops starting over the weekend. PSU at home, hopefully with a better result than 38-33 with no free throw attempts.

For those not paying attention, that makes Illinois' opening BT schedule: NW at home, Iowa at home, at Indiana, PSU at home. After a trip to Purdue and a visit from MSU, it's: at NW, at PSU, home vs. Indiana, at Iowa. So, there's potential for an 8-2 start in conference.

After that, they may not win another game.
