I haven't followed this thread at all this summer. Has Illinois ordered their championship banners yet?

Your clearly just trying to bait us, but I will bite anyways.

Illinois is coming out of a down cycle, and we have still made the tournament 9 out of the last 10 years. There is plenty of reason for Illini fans to feel good about upcoming years with the recruiting we have done. So yes I am excited, and no I am not ready to order the banners yet.

To touch on a previous point by Sully....

Weber going out and starting the recruiting process with 8th and 9th graders is brilliant as it keeps Illini fans in a constant state of "just a year away" fantasy land.

Not that I'm rooting against you guys.....I'd love for just about any Big Ten team to win it all again.

You don't really know what you're talking about. 2010 is the year that everyone has been hopefully pointing towards the past couple years because of Jereme Richmond. Some people have wavered due to fears of losing him, or fears of nobody else joining him in the class. Next year and 2011 is the year people are pointing to. Weber is looking at 8th and 9th graders to try and get in on them before the Dukes, Kansases, UNCs, and Greaseball UKs can get in on the kids. Establish the relationship early, and the kid likes you best. It worked for Richmond, it worked for Head, worked for Abrams, and will hopefully work out for some other current juniors.

Eh, the approach is still untested, as no one who was recruited in this manner has played a game for Illinois yet. Actually, I don't remember how early on Weber began pursuing Bertrand, Paul, Richardson, and Griffey. I believe the 2010 class is the first one in which Weber implemented this strategy. It'll still be a while before we see how this pays off, but the way the three prospects from that class are maturing, it seems like much more than some sort of ploy to keep Illini fans at ease.

The National Title and Final Four talk from Illinois fans is way over the top take it as extreme optimism. I just want to get back to winning the Big Ten consistently again. I feel it is a realistic goal. Given the uptick in recruiting and coaching across the conference, I think this would speak volumes for the program.

I want to say Bertrand committed in 10th grade, with the talk beginning in ninth.

Bertrand commited fall of his junior year. All three guard commits in the '09 class were very close together.

Bertrand, Richardson, and Paul all committed early in their junior years within a week of each other. Richmond's the only freshman who's verballed.

It's always premature to talk National Title for future seasons. If you expect to be winning the Big 10 consistently, you should be talking Final 4.

I agree, I just really enjoy winning the Big Ten, and I feel like if we take care of winning the Big Ten then the rest will take care of itself. The players will come, the FF's will come, and hopefully the elusive National Title will finally be brought home. I hate pretty much every school in the Big Ten except MSU and I am indifferent towards Minnesota so I really really love to win it.

It beats the pants off of what we were doing before, waiting for a kid only to have a powerhouse sweep in and snatch them up at the end.

I don't have the hate for Big 10 basketball schools that I do for Big 10 football schools. It's pretty much just the 2 doormats that I hate.

I'm assuming this was an, admittedly, clever dig aimed this direction. That situation won't be interminable though.

i don't know what you think you mean. if illinois keeps getting these kids year after year, then they'll be highly competitive year after year and that will just be the way that it is.

i don't even think bertrand was an illinois lean in 10th grade. bruce showed up a lot in sterling to see him play, though. it's hard to turn down a guy who has been having dinner with your family since you were 14 years old.

As soon as Weber showed up in town, everyone in Sterling assumed he was going to Illinois. At least that's how I recall it, and we all know how memory can be tricky.

illinois suks.

Haha enjoy the Big Ten basement. Iowa might be worse than IU this year.

does that mean my Nittany Lions are good for 9th? SWEET

Iowa got a big '10 commit from Zach McCabe today. He was blowing up this summer and received offers from Minnesota, Virginia, Arizona State, Northwestern, Utah and others. Some saying he may sneak into top 100.

Obviously not on par with Illinois and others at the top of the conference but at least Lickliter has beaten out quality programs and a lot of high-majors for the 2010 class.

Larson is top 100-150 by some and had offers from Gonzaga, Nebraska, Baylor and smaller schools.

Brust had offers from Stanford, Northwestern, Butler, a lot of mid-majors and Virginia was close.

Marble Jr. had Providence, Michigan was supposed to offer on his visit and a lot of mid-majors.

At least some hope for a middle of the pack finish in 2010 with Cole, Gatens, Tucker, Fuller as upperclassmen and some decent talent in the freshman and sophomore classes. With the Big Ten improving it will still be a hell of a struggle but it should beat the last 2 seasons plus next year.

Most people probably don't care much, but I still found it interesting. Marquette is likely to jump ship with Wade to Nike's Jumpman line. I believe that would make Marquette one of three colleges in the brand line with UNC and Georgetown. Probably also means a jersey change, though probably not for this season. I know some people don't like them, but I personally love the MU jerseys, especially the gold and powder blue ones.

Seems like once they get there they don't like playing for Lickliter though. It's been a rough start for him there, but I still think you made a good hire.
