Illinois/Mizzou game called off after 2010.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/ncaa/06/01/mizzou-illinois.ap/

I'd love a home-home series in the future.

Pansies. I'm not a fan of either team, but that game is usually a heck of a lot more entertaining than most opening weekend garbage. Why not play 1 quality non-con opponent? I understand losing a home game hurts, but come on, give the fans a show. I like the whole 1/2 and 1/2 crowd thing in the border city, too.

Until some sort of rule is made, no one is going to play anybody OOC. Outside of traditional rivalries, only Ohio State (give them some credit even though they have 8 home games every year) and USC seem interested in playing ANYONE outside their conference.

The UT-OSU home and home was fun. I would like to see Texas and TCU go at it once, though TCU has a tough time getting people to schedule them also. Still with the BCS setup the way it is OCC is not real important for anyone in a major conference, especially if there is a ton a parity in the Big XII and SEC.

Janoris Jenkins of UF was tasered.

At least there are now two universities in the state of Florida that have had players tasered, and FSU isn't by themselves any more. Welcome to the top 1% of 1% that UF players represent!

Wasn't Florida home of the infamous (and hilarious) "Don't tase me bro!" incident as well?

Yes, yes it was. I had forgotten about that.

Penn State has a home/home with Alabama coming up

After this years Ohio State game, USC's OOC schedule doesn't look so hot. Mostly BCS programs (Hawaii and SJ State are in there) but lots of down programs like Virginia, Syracuse, and Minnesota. BC should still be decent in a few years when they start a home and home. Notre Dame will need to get its act together.

Zack Asack was kicked off Duke's team. He started at QB his freshman year, then got suspended for a year for plagarism (and kicked out of Duke for that year). Thaddeus Lewis stole his job and Asack had been the backup the last two years. He was trying to transition to safety for his senior year. Reports are saying that Asack cheated again to get kicked out.

The game's being dropped because Illinois wants 7 home games, not because they're pansies

The next 2 years they have Missouri, Fresno, and Cincy. In '11(1 open spot) and '12(3 open spots) they have Arizona St.

I'm pleased. Just picked up two copies of Athlon's college football preview magazines - one for the entirety of college football and one for the Southeastern region.

Good reading.

Auburn's 'Big Cat Weekend' was controversial and most would consider it successful. Here is a snippet from ESPN insider. Chizik is basically exploiting the fact that secondary violations really don't amount to any significantly harmful punishment. Until the NCAA changes the rules so that X number of secondary violations leads to some type of sanctions against the university, then I personally don't have a problem with him using some ingenuity to compete with Saban's recruiting ability. I certainly won't mind if Seastrunk commits to Auburn in January.

There was some juicy stuff that came from Auburn's "Big Cat Weekend," in which the Tigers hosted a bunch of blue-chip prospects on unofficial visits. A lot of recruits, especially Texas RB Lache Seastrunk, left Auburn raving, Charles Goldberg writes.

There's also some video of the weekend festivities floating around the Web and at one point Seastrunk looks into the camera and gives Nick Saban a shout-out, saying, "What's up, Nick Saban? Wait 'til we get here."

A bigger concern for Gene Chizik is the school's examination of Auburn's violation of some rules, Evan Woodbery reports:

"At least two NCAA bylaws may have been breached during the weekend. Although NCAA rules (Bylaw 13.10.6) bar the introduction of visiting student-athletes during any function, videos of the event posted on two Web sites show the crowd cheering as the players are introduced by name, position and hometown. The man yelling the introductions does not appear on the videos, but assistant head coach Trooper Taylor is shown leading the crowd in cheers immediately after the introductions. Introduction of student-athletes would be a secondary violation and would not affect the athletes' eligibility.

"NCAA Bylaw 13.10.5 prevents schools from publicizing an athlete's visit or allowing the visitor to "participate in team activities that would make the public or media aware of the prospective student-athlete's visit to the institution (e.g., running out of the tunnel with team, celebratory walks to or around the stadium/arena, on-field pregame celebrations)." The rolling of Toomer's Corner was advertised on all three major Web sites that cover Auburn Saturday, with push-pinned message board posts urging fans to attend. The posts did not attribute the information to coaches or other Auburn staff members. However, many fans did show up for what was clearly a planned event. Auburn police provided crowd and traffic control. Aubie, Auburn's mascot, helped lead cheers."

OK. No doubt we've been seeing more and more of this kind of colorful recruiting story making it into the press (and into the NCAA's crosshairs) in the past few years. I'm going to get into this topic more in a subsequent entry since it's obviously one I feel a connection to given some of this spectacle was the reason I wrote a book about recruiting. I spoke to a college administrator Monday morning about Big Cat Weekend and got an interesting reaction:

"That is one of the biggest problems I have with the NCAA. All of the prospects enjoyed it, and they leave the campus having a great time. Auburn will report a secondary violation, which is nothing. In the end they will probably get some of those players. They should put in a rule that if you have multiple reported violations with a prospect you are not allowed to recruit him."

Seastrunk sure left Auburn gushing: "I can't reveal all the information, but you guys will be surprised when I commit [in early January]. And I think y'all might like where I choose," he told Auburnundercover.com. "This is the best ever," Seastrunk continued. "They just welcome you in. I feel the warmth of everyone. I love the environment here and I feel at home."

I suspect the reporters who were told the "y'all might like where I choose" probably are a little uncomfortable with that part especially as the school's compliance folks snoop around how Big Cat Weekend came together.

Part of me wants Texas to get this kid, part me thinks he is going to be a big headache. Darius White and Jackson Jeffcoat would be huge pickups for Texas if they have any shot. A big time WR would be great for Garrett Gilbert when he is a red-shirt soph.

The "Big Cat Weekend" was about as embarrassing as a recruiting tool as the Tiger Prowl Limo. Anybody who considers the "Big Cat Weekend" a success has very low standards, IMO.

I read that Richardson's going to JUCO this summer to try to be eligible for 2010. With his obvious command of the english language, I'm optimistic this can be done.

If they actually get those players, then yeah its a success for Auburn.

I'm shocked he couldn't qualify at a university.

LOL that's fantastic.

Also, you need to keep your head DOWN, Shelton. As in, looking down at a book.

Embarrassing? Why? ...because a secondary rule was broken and recruits' names were announced in a pregame like fashion? Marketing is a major component of business, and this particular marketing tool seems to have produced some results.

Chizik is looking like a total snake oil salesman. He was seriously underwhelming at ISU.

I disagree with your first sentence and agree with the second. Chizik is having to directly compete against one of the best recruiters this decade anyway in Nick Saban, and I don't have any problems with the tactics he has used thus far. His teams at Iowa State didn't produce, but I'm not sure how one can determine that his stay at Auburn will be a failure based upon his brief stay at Iowa State. I wasn't super excited about the hire, but I'll wait until at least 2010 to pass judgement on his efforts at AU.

I know that it is the SEC, but I think you need to give him at least one recruiting cycle before you can accurately guage his performance. 2 years seems a little short, especially given the fact he came in late in the recruiting season this year.
