With Lee, Ramirez, and Bradley all out with day-to-day injuries our offense looks something like this:

-Soriano LF

-Theriot SS

-Fukudome RF

-Hoffpauir 1B

-Johnson CF

-Fontenot 3B

-Soto C

-Miles 2B

…with a bench of: Koyie Hill.

Unless someone is ready to play tonight they have to make a move. Right?

I would have bet heavily they wouldn't go into the season with only one backup IF. I was wrong. They routinely let guys sit around on day-to-day situations for a week+, and at this point it wouldn't surprise me if they did it again. Fox would have had to catch a flight to Arizona a long time ago to make the game. My guess is they'll live with Rammy and Bradley potentially pinch hitting and give Lee a day or two.

Imagine if we did not make a move and then have one of those 19 inning marathons. That would be awesome.

Indeed. I would love to see Zambrano playing 3B

Not necessary. Afterall, it's still preseason, right?

With Bradley on the team there's always chance of a catch similar to Tanaka's in Major League II. If that's not enough reason to keep him on the roster then I don't know what is.

Jake Fox is in the starting lineup for Iowa tonight.

...and just hit his 10th HR.

and 11th...

1.549 OPS. Ridiculous.

I know he sucks defensively. But just how bad of a 3B would Fox have to be to make the team worse by running him out there v Fontenot? I'm thinking he'd have to kick every ball hit to him and then throw it out to the OF, allowing the batter to score. And maybe even tackle Theriot on a few routine grounders to SS.

Particularly when Fontenot would shift back to second and the difference in offensive production would be Jake Fox v. Aaron Miles.

it almost makes too much sense.

Sounds like Bradley is starting today and ARam went full speed in Monday's pre-game, so he could be back very soon too. Probably no longer worth it, unless Lee's injury is more than a day-to-day thing.

I think Bruce's article mentioned ARam possibly starting if there are no next day effects from his workout. Sullivan states in one article that Aramis will not go and Fontenot will probably be back at third, and in another article says Aramis is likely to start.

Injury update: Marmol threw a bullpen session of 25 pitches Monday while wearing a small brace on his sprained left knee and said he felt fine. He'll be available to return on Tuesday. Aramis Ramirez took batting practice and should be ready to return from his sore calf on Tuesday. Milton Bradley (groin) was ready to play Monday. Derrek Lee's neck spasms haven't improved, and he may be out for the series.

Piniella said Aramis Ramirez would not be ready to play on Tuesday, so Fontenot will likely head back to third base.

So what you're saying is Paul Sullivan has no damn clue what he's talking about.

Hasn't that been obvious for a while now?

And now 12th.

Granted, he probably can't play 3rd any better than, say, Fontenot, but the guy is hitting the holy [expletive] out of the ball.

Aramis Ramirez may not ride those rails for a while. The third baseman, inactive since sustaining a calf injury on Friday in St. Louis, will again try running during early Wrigley Field workouts. If that test does not go any better than a similar dry run on Tuesday in Phoenix, the Cubs will put him on the disabled list and recall Bobby Scales from Triple-A Iowa.

"We've gone as far as we can without an extra infielder," said manager Lou Piniella. "It's decision time. If we have to do something, we'll bring up Scales. He's been in the Minor Leagues a long time, and it'll be a wonderful opportunity for him."

Scales, 31, has appeared in 992 games during a decade-long Minor League career. He has yet to appear in a Major League game.

As much as Id prefer Jake Foxs bat, Im going to have to admit we need someone who can play a competant third base. Scales has put up solid minor league numbers for us, so hopefully he'll make the most out of his cup of coffee. As for Fox, if Joey Gathright continues to be as useful as a copy of Maxim, to Stevie Wonder, Fox will get his shot.

Is Scales competent at 3rd? I'm sure he's better than Fox, but his minor league fielding percentage at 3rd is .897. It's a flawed stat and a fairly small sample size (121 games), but when it's that low it sets off some red flags. I'm guessing that Scales or Miles will play 2B and they keep Fontenot at 3B.
