Vizcaino has pitched quite well in limited action and over most of his career has been a decent arm. I can't imagine he'll be cut this quickly. Then again, I couldn't imagine Shark would be called up at all.

the trib has it and speculates Vizcaino could be released, which makes very little sense at this point in time.

The shark has been really good against lefties though that has been in only 13ip against. The move that makes the most sense is for shark to come up and replace Cotts.

The move that makes the most sense at this point is no move at all.

If they didn't want to release Vizcaino at the end of spring training -- and decided to cut Gaudin instead -- what possibly could justify changing course on that decision at this point?

I'm guessing they found a trade partner willing to take a small, small portion of Vizcaino's salary.

The only thing I'm questioning is that if it's a trade, why wouldn't it be announced before the ballgame? The Cubs certainly aren't going to be able to use the traded player in tonight's ballgame. I guess it would be all for the benefit of the other team who would be optioning a player to make room.

I don't like this move even if it were to replace Cotts. I'd be fine with it if it were any of the other relieving options in AAA replacing Cotts, but Samardzija needed the time down there. And none of the other major league relievers needed to be traded or released yet.

My guess is the big reason to make this move is to have one spot in the bullpen that can be optioned up or down, and that they are going to trade a reliever now before the interest dies down.

If its' a trade, it can still be announced before the game, or during the game. Or even after, if the details are still being worked out before an announcement.

Another Cubs Blog is saying that the Score says the rumor is Vizcaino being released outright. It just doesn't make any sense. Even if you were going to do something as silly as this, then wait a week until we need a fresh arm from our stretch without off days.

BEST...MOVE...EVER

Release a guy whose done just fine AND is owed like 5 million to boot(especially when our soon to be owner cant seem to afford the team) to bring up our unproven talent.

Meanwhile someone else picks up Vizcaino for league minimum, and if Shark ends up sucking, he goes back to Iowa, and we probably bring up Chad Fox.

We need Bruce's input.

Why not release Cotts? God, this whole "we need a lefty" mentality is stupid. He sucks! Get rid of him!

The we need a lefty mentality is part of the game, especially late in the game when a tough lefty comes to the plate. However, when your lefty cant get lefty batters out any better than he can get righty batters out, its pointless.

I understand the thinking. However, I only want that lefty there if he's effective.

I don't care how many lefties I have in my bullpen. It could be zero, or it could be seven. All I care about is results-- Do they get hitters out on a regular basis? If so, then I want them on this team. If not, then I don't, and I don't care which hand he throws with.

Neal Cotts isn't that bad guys. We just don't use him properly. He's a useful guy to have in the pen as a long men because he's got stuff better suited for righties, but can get lefties out decently and he can go two innings if need be. He's not dominant enough against lefties to be a LOOGY which is what we try to do with him. We keep putting him in situations where he's going to fail, and when he fails we bitch at him.

i wonder if vizcaino is a big clubhouse distraction or something. because releasing him makes zero sense.

This definitely sounds like something that Lou asked for considering this news came directly after the Lou-Hendry meeting this afternoon. I'm not sure if Lou thought he was a problem though or if he simply said that he never was going to trust him so might as well let him go.
