Chad Gaudin-R- Padres Apr. 24 - 4:46 am et

Chad Gaudin struck out seven in five scoreless innings for Triple-A Portland on Thursday.

He allowed just two hits and walked none. Gaudin, who was released by the Cubs at the end of the spring, opted to sign with the Padres because he'd have a chance to start, and it looks like he may be in the team's rotation before long with the way he's progressing. He hasn't given up a run in two starts for Portland.

Salt in the wound.

Maybe we can get retroactive credit for Gaudin when we pick up Peavy talks again.

Bob Brenly said during today's game that Luis Vizcaino had "tardiness issues" in addition to his stuff being essentially worthless and that he was getting guys out "with smoke and mirrors."

I have no problem with the Cubs' decision to DFA Vizcaino. Calling up Samardzija was probably a promise they made to him to keep him from whining from the demotion. I would have prefered a call-up of Jason Waddell, the Cubs have 40-man roster spots available, and a need for a lefty, but...

With Samardzija's poor outing today, I'm not sure he was as ready as the Cubs had hoped.

That screams 'mouthpiece of the Cubs'. Maybe he did have tardiness issues, but if he was getting people out, he was getting people out, and I don't care if he used smoke and mirrors, magic wands, bunny rabbits or [expletive] hamster armies to do it.

If he had nothing in April that probably means he had nothing in spring training. So why wasn't he released then instead of Gaudin?

Not sure of the true answer, but my guess is that the Cubs were a bit disappointed in Gaudin since we acquired him. Once a player is in Lou's doghouse, it's hard to get out of it. Cotts seems to be next.

Is it possible to pull back a DFAd player? We could really use Vizcaino back.
I don't think you can, but if he clears waivers without being traded and gets released I think he could be re-signed.

TERRIBLE move DFAing him and keeping Patton.

Indians Sign Luis Vizcaino

By Tim Dierkes [May 7 at 10:46am CST]

According to Luis Vizcaino's agency Gaylord Sports, the reliever has been acquired by the Indians. The Cubs designated Vizcaino for assignment on April 23rd to make room for Jeff Samardzija. Vizcaino is owed $4MM, and presumably the Cubs will assume $3.6MM of that. They released him at some point, so he signed with Cleveland as a free agent.

The Cubs jettisoned Vizcaino after 3.6 scoreless innings. It seems they never wanted him; acquiring him was just a way to move some of Jason Marquis' salary.

I havent said anything with all the moves made in the offseason, but it's time. This organization has no idea what the hell it is doing.
