Its too bad that Gallardo got hurt last year, Sheets got hurt in September, and Yost rode CC too hard. A healthy and fresh rotation of Sabathia, Sheets, and Gallardo really could have been a force last October. And since the Cubs got bitch slapped out of the first round anyway, it would have been fun to watch.

I don't think you can call them irrelevant after 3 games, though. They still have a capable team.

I'm being a bit sarcastic considering it's only 3 games into the season, but looking at their pitching staff, there's no way they will compete this year. They are "capable" yes, capable of giving up a ton of runs. Sure, they'll score some runs on ya, but it's hard to win 11 to 8 on a consistant basis. I'm just stating that things will be back to normal in Brewtown. A half empty ballpark, just waiting for football season to come back around.

The Brewers are going to hit, you can be sure of that. But outside of Gallardo's starts it's going to be a bumpy ride for the Crew. There will be a lot of holding on for dear life in 10-8, 11-10 types of games.

Their pitching staff is just all kinds of awful. They have enough ammo left for one more major trade, but I have a hard time imagining them being within striking distance by the time the market heats up.

No I don't really think it was too bad all that happened. I don't root for injuries but I also don't root for the Brewers to win anything.

I wouldn't call it the end of the Brewers just yet. I still think despite today Manny Parra can provide good numbers for them. Yo is a stud and will be solid all year. Soup is what he is, he will eat some innings and give you a mid 4's ERA.

The thing that's going to hurt Milwaukee is the economy. If they are hovering about .500 in July, they will have less incentive to take on salary to upgrade the rotation.

That said, hearing the owners comments, I think they are serious about winning. I don't think they would spent the entire decade building the farm system so that they could only compete for 1.5 years and then back away. They still have some good talent in the minors that can help them or provide value in a trade. I for one kinda hope they do, as long as they don't win the division at the Cubs expense. I think a Chicago-Milwaukee rivalry can only be good for both sides (but especially the Brewers).

I'm not a minor league guru, so other than Gamel and Escobar, what do they have left in terms of top tier prospects?

Brett Lawrie, but he's ways away and he's in the lower half of the top 100 prospects. They also have Jeremy Jefferies, who BA has #100 in their top 100 prospects.

Yeah its gutted a little, but they have enough pieces to put together for a trade using Gamel and/or Escobar as centerpieces. They are much deeper than the Cubs farm system at least.

Last offseason really killed them. I'd personally be devistated if I was a Brewers fan and I lost Sheets and CC and only got 1 sandwhich pick for them instead of 4 first rounders. Brutal.

If I'm the Brewers I wait until this offseason to make major improvements. If they roll the dice and trade away Escobar and Gamel and don't make the postseason, it would be an unmitigated disaster. There will be quite a few solid SP available via free agency after this season.

If they are neck and neck with the Cubs come July, a move would make sense. But I can't see that happening. At this point, I think the Astros and Cardinals may well be ahead of them by then.

I wouldn't go that far, The team is almost the same team to start the season as last year, only think is you replace sheets with yo. and yo is better than sheets. When we got CC the Brewers were 15 games about .500. I wouldn't make to much of the 3 games at sf, we had to face 3 really good pitchers and the Brewers have never played well on the west coast. The Brewers are a much better at home. I do think the Brewers bullpen is better than we started off last year, there is no Gange, Turnbow or Mota. If you want to think they not go go right ahead, but the Brewers are still very much a good team.

If they stay irrelevant, it will be that much easier to get Cub tix at Miller Park =D>

Was it ever hard?

Thats what she said...

Seriously though, it was harder to get Crew single game tix to the Cubs games than it was for me to get tix to Wrigley this year.

Actually, by the time single gamers went on sale, there was pretty much only standing room left. I got my tix during the 9-game pack sale.

Opening day in Milwaukee is always crazy, wtmj radio just said there are about 30 cars allready in line to get in the parking lot which don't open until noon, but my guess the parking lot will be open at around 11am due to the high amount of people allready there.

I think Angel Salome has lost a little luster, but he's still a nice prospect. I like him a hell of a lot more than I like Escobar.

Well, both raked at AA last year, but an inflated BABIP was a cause for concern (especially Escobar), IIRC. I agree that Salome's a nice prospect, but he really got set back with that 50-game suspension at the end of 2007/start of 2008...it cost him a lot of ABs that he could probably use. I think both will be nice MLB players, but Escobar likely won't be much more than a defensive specialist and Salome would be lucky to be a hitting catcher with little defensive value. Apparently the Brewers are confident in either Salome or Jonathan Lucroy becoming a starting catcher down the road, considering they moved Lawrie to second base.

This past offseason was rough, but things will get a lot worse if they decide they want to trade J.J. Hardy to make room for Escobar, or even if they move Hardy to third, where he'd barely be average offensively. I personally think the Brewers will be above .500 for at least the next two or three years, but I'll agree they won't pose much of a threat to the division leader unless everything breaks their way (kind of like last year). The gap between Gamel/Escobar and the rest of the farm system in terms of MLB readiness is a little scary, though...Jeffress is the only pitcher that really has a high ceiling, and he won't go anywhere until he puts down the bong and starts passing drug tests.

That's because the Cubs are in town

No that is not true. Opening day crowds always get there real early in the moring. Last year on opening day for a 1pm gave i got there at 845am and there were already hundreded of cars allready there.

The fans here in KC are pretty fired up for opening day as well. I'm going tomorrow.

Have fun. That's probably the most underrated stadium in baseball. Awesome place to catch a game. I'm excited to see the renovations.
