not exactly sure how i feel about this decision. on one hand, i like the idea of giving a young guy a chance if you really think he's going to be better than the veteran. it doesn't happen enough, imo. on the other hand, it's hard for me to feel confident about a guy who has never pitched above high A (and didn't exaclty dominate there). the bullpen transaction options are now extremely limited. i think there's a pretty decent chance Patton will end up going back anyway at some point and Gaudin has been dropped for nothing.

hope i'm wrong. good luck, David.

Gaudin forced their hand, he simply wasn't good enough.

Something tells me there was more to the story of him being released than his poor performance too. Who knows...

He was bad for us for half a season and had a bad spring. But he had some success in Oakland. I'm still surprised we couldn't trade him for something. It's not like his salary would make a trade impossible.

Hendry was saying during the game on Saturday that he was shocked this spring when getting calls about his relievers how most teams in the league couldn't even take on 1 million dollars in salary. He couldn't believe that they didn't save a little flexibility at the 11th hour to add somebody. I'm pretty sure he was implying about his efforts to try to trade Gaudin and that the contract was just making that almost impossible.

So they could have traded him but would have had to pay most of his salary. Instead they release him and have to pay all of his salary minus Legue minimum. That bra bomb better work Nerdlinger.

So you take on all but $400k and get back a ptbnl (or maybe a marginal prospect).

miles' $ + gaudin's $ = derosa's $.

fontenot better be good.

Ugh don't remind me. Getting rid of DeRosa was dumb.

Terrible move. I still don't understand what Hendry was thinking.

I'm pretty convinced the argument that he wanted to get more left handed to the point that he was willing to downgrade the team by doing it is right.

Hopefully Fontenot is good and Bradley is healthy this year to offset the downgrade in versatility.

You can still get more left-handed and not trade DeRo. You can make them share time at 2B with Fontenot batting against righties and keep DeRo for his versatility. It was a complete screw up by Hendry, no question about it.

I know you can get more left handed without trading DeRo, but I can't think of another close to logical reason (not that this one is, it just has the most evidence to support it).

the cubs did the right thing here. Gaudin stunk it up as soon as he got here. Patton and Guzman have a lot more potential to be bullpen fixtures now and in the future. Both guys have better 'stuff' then Gaudin showed with the cubs.

i haven't seen a whole lot of patton, but i find it hard to believe that a guy who posted whips of 1.38 and 1.58 the last two seasons as a 24/25 year old in high A has better "stuff" than gaudin.

I really don't think Patton will make it through the end of the year and when that happens releasing Gaudin for nothing will look like a mistake but whatever, we have some options available in the minors. Still surprised Wuertz was traded.

No he didn't. He was awesome for about the first month. In his first 14.2 innings with the Cubs he gave up 3 ER, 9 hits, 3 walks, and had 18 k's. Then he kind of fell apart after the injury.

They just got rid of a proven league average swingman for a 24 year reliever who can't even get guys out in A+, just because of spring training numbers.

No, they got rid of him because of how god awful he was soon after arriving here throughout the end of the season and the horrific spring, and the fact that he injured himself while drunk, thus entering Piniella's doghouse.

Heilman is 1.33 career and 1.59 last year, and people insist that he's got great stuff. Clement's WHIP was always high despite great "stuff". I don't think a high WHIP corrrelates to lesser stuff.

at least those guys were posting those whips in the big leagues.

6th starter and middle relief types are just too inconsistent to make much of their numbers.

I'm surprised they cut Gaudin, and doubtful about Patton's ability to do better, but who knows. Neither is going to be special. Go with the hot hand if you can.

If any team is in a position to take a chance like cutting Gaudin and keeping Patton, it's the Cubs. Nobody has as many "bottom half of the pitching staff" alternatives as we do.

Meh, we'll have Samardzija to come up whenever we send Patton back.
