Billy Beane strikes again!! Must've been a reason he let him go with Harden.

I think we've gotten the better of Billy Beane trades in the past. This is probably the first time he got the better of us as far as I can recall.

Whether Beane got the best of the Cubs is still open to question at this point. Gallagher has gone from No. 2 starter to out of the rotation for Oakland, as his velocity dropped as spring training went on. Eric Patterson is in the minor leagues, as is Murton, with Colorado. If Harden stays healthy and makes 25 starts and most of them are of the quality variety, then I think the Cubs get the better of this deal. But it's too early to judge now.

Thanks for the info, Bruce!

And I agree. Gaudin was a toss-in anyway and did moderately well for a little while last year for us.

The key to the trade was Harden, and he's been very good since arriving in Chicago. The only way I see the Cubs not winning this trade is if Gallagher becomes really good for the As.

You could make an argument that he got the better end of the Bowen/Blevins for Kendall trade. But otherwise I can't think of any offhand.

Even that is somewhat debatable, when you consider Kendall got us a draft pick that ended up being Ryan Flaherty. So it really was Kendall/Flaherty for Blevins/Bowen. Jerry Blevins looks like a solid LH specialist, but I think Flaherty is gonna a pretty good everyday player in the future but thats just my opinion. Plus Kendall gave us a few solid offensive months from the catcher postion, until Soto took over.

That's why I said you could make the argument and not something more definitive.

I was talking of all of our past trades with him. We certainly got the better end of the (albeit indirect) Miller for Barrett swap, we got a great year out of Bellhorn for basically nothing, etc...

I think he might get the better of us on the Wuertz deal though.

My reference to Beane was not really referring to the Cubs and who got the better of the deal. It's really about Beane seeming to know the right time to get/give up players. Gaudin may have been a "throw in" for Beane, but I'll bet it sweetened the pot for Hendry.

I still like the trade, but Beane has a good eye for talent (or lack of).

If I remember right, Gaudin was seen more as a nice addition who could help the pen a bit late in the year and had a little upside. Not really an integral part of the trade on Hendry's side.

I don't know about that. He held on to Chavez too long (and still does), and let Zito walk instead of trading him a year earlier when he could have gotten something great for him. He's pretty mediocre IMO in that regard. I think he's better at the scouting and player development piece. Whenever the As have done well, it's generally been due to the success of guys that that are pretty much completely home grown.

Not sure I love this move. Gaudin pitched decently yesterday in NY, getting away from Arizona where breaking balls go to die. I wanted him to make this team because I thought he'd be a viable 6th starter in case Harden or someone else goes down. Now we will have to go to Heilman, and that will significantly shorten our pen, as the only pen guys I trust are Marmol, Gregg and Heilman. I would have at least gave him a shot. Patton didn't impres me enough to think that he could contribute this year. How many Rule 5 picks have played for teams expected to compete for a championship.

If I were the decision maker, I would have kept Guzman and Gaudin and sent Patton back while keeping Shark at AAA. Now that I think about it, I guess Shark could be a good 6th starter callup, but I think Heilman would be quite upset about being passed up for a rotation spot if someone goes down.

I would have gone with Gaudin and Guzman and sent Patton back. Not sure I buy into his sudden emergence as a big league caliber reliever.

Hendy and Lou talking up the competition so much kind of backed themselves into a corner. You can't say that then give the job to two guys who had awful springs over a guy that was light's out.

In the big picture I am not sure this is going to matter either way. Gaudin and Patton will probably both have non-attention worty careers. Just think Gaudin is more likely to turn it around and be useful this year than Patton is to stay solid all season and stick.
