Cool. I really would like to see him make it. Him & Rivas both. But that is just my homerism for old Fort Wayne Wizards shining through.

Speaking of which, Jake Peavy is an ex-Wizard too.

If we are going to add a backup infielder, Id prefer someone who has had some level of success at the big league level, so If prefer Koskie over German or Rivas.

Well German has had success in the majors, but yes I'd prefer Koskie over him as well.

But Koskie can't play SS. So it's probably not a Koskie or German so much as a Koskie or Hoffpauir/Gathright

Koskie could probably play SS as well as our current backup SS.

Corey Koskie fell ill after taking several ground balls during Thursday's game against the Mariners.

It's not clear if the illness is related to Koskie's history of post-concussion syndrome, but manager Lou Piniella seemed to imply that after the game. "As soon as he said he wasn't feeling well, we got him out of there," said Piniella. Koskie won't be long for Cubs camp if he can't handle playing the field.

Darn, that's too bad.

With Koskie looking like he will have to retire, I wonder if Hendry wishes he would have held onto Casey McGehee. He is batting .410 for the Brewers this spring and could be a backup at 3b,2b,1b, and an emergency c.

I am guessing "no".

He's retired - as per MLB Trade Rumors through a Minnesota paper.

Corey Koskie Retires

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [March 21 at 12:44pm CST]

According to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune Corey Koskie is retiring. Koskie has struggled with concussion-related problems over the last few years and he felt light-headed this week after diving for a ball at third base.

Koskie says he's reitiring because he no longer wants to worry about getting another concussion. He still sounds confident in his abilities.

He almost matched Marquis Grissoms tenure with the Cubs.

I guess it's down to German, Gathright, and to a much, much lesser extent Fox for that last bench spot. If only one of them could play catcher.

Corey Koskie said Saturday that he's retiring following his latest setback with post-concussion syndrome.

Koskie, who had missed 2 1/2 seasons since going down in mid-2006, was attempting a return with the Cubs as a bench player. It's a real shame that his career has to end this way, but at least he did make more than $26 million and he should be able to live a pretty normal life from here on in with the progress he's made over the last year or so. The 35-year-old hit .275/.367/.458 with 124 homers in nine seasons. He won his owners a lot of fantasy leagues in 2001, when he hit .276 with 26 homers, 103 RBI, 100 R and 27 steals. He never had more than 71 RBI or 11 steals in any other season.

Another link on him retiring.

He took himself out of Thursday's game against Seattle in the third inning. He said Saturday that he asked himself after diving for a grounder: "What am I doing out here?"

Too bad. Koskie was a good guy and would have been a good bat off of the bench.

Koskie would have been the better choice, but I thought Aurilia would have been a decent signing for 1B/3B/pinch hitting.

Amazing how there are sooo many concussions in sports and almost always, the player is able to continue. And yet this guys physiology prevents him from playing. That's too bad for him. He would have been a nice addition to the team later in the season.
