* Here's something I can't believe I'm typing... can Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd make a Major League comeback at age 49? Oil Can hasn't pitched since 1991, but claims his velocity is back up in the low 90s, and his curveball is back to form. He's always dreamt of carrying on Satchel Paige's legend and pitching into his 60s. Boyd's quote:

""I have nothing to lose, and all a major league team has to lose is 15 minutes," said Boyd. "Give me 15 minutes and I'll show I can still pitch. That's all I want."

Boyd threw at the Red Sox fantasy camp, and former catcher Mike Stanley said that Oil Can's stuff is the same as it was 18 years ago, and his passion hasn't died down one bit.

Certainly an interesting story, but can he live up to his word?

My dad is actually friends with Oil Can and plays in baseball tournaments around the Northeast with him. I called him when I saw this and he said he had been working out with Brooks Robinson (?) for some reason, but didn't realize he was going to try to come back. He hasn't talked to him in 3 weeks though so I guess it's legit.

Every time I hear his name I always assume he was a player from the dead ball era. How come there's no players today with old timey names like that? Someone needs to step their game up and make this happen

Sounds like a job for OMC

Agreed. We need more names like Sal "The Barber" Maglie and Dick "The Duck" Ellsworth. (FWIW, I guess the software doesn't know that Ellsworth's first name is the familiar for Richard.)

That's true on the cubs.com board too (at least it was back when I posted there).

LOL, he was always an interesting character. Not that anyone cares, but he actually pitched for my home town independent team (Sioux City Explorers) for awhile back in the mid 90's. If I remember correctly he sorta sucked his last year here. Has he been pitching in obscurity for all these years, or did he retire and is now coming back?

A friend of mine plays in a wood bat league every summer in Rhode Island. He got to play against Oil Can one game last summer and basically said you wouldn't believe he's as old as he is. Not that that means he's capable of playing at the major league level again, but apparently he's kept himself in very good condition over the years.

Yup that's how my dad knows him. Him and Oil Can play in traveling tournaments with other ex-major leaguers (of which my dad is not), mostly around NE but sometimes Arizona and Florida too. My dad says he can still hit 90 at times with decent control.

Anyone else remember when Jim Palmer attempted a come back after being elected into the HOF? Didnt work out. Neither will Dennis'.

Inspired "Sam Malone" from Cheers to try a comeback on the series.

How about Mark "the bird" Fridrich- I like to see that.
