Reds Sign Jacque Jones, Daryle Ward

By Tim Dierkes [February 5 at 2:28pm CST]

According to Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, the Reds signed Jacque Jones and Daryle Ward to minor league deals today.

Jones, 34 in April, hit .147/.239/.207 in 134 plate appearances for the Tigers and Marlins last year. Jones played winter ball and had laser eye surgery this winter.

Ward, 33, hit .216/.319/.402 in 119 plate appearances for the Cubs last year. He missed time with a herniated disc.

Not a surprise to see Jacque and Dusty together again. I'm sure he talked Jocketty into giving Jones a chance on a minor league contract. Just like he did with Corey Patterson a year ago. Darlye Ward never played for Dusty, but he still feels like his kinda dude.

Don't mind Ward, he is an upgrad from Valentin as the designated fat guy PHer.

Not sure what purpose Jacque serves though.

Ward could actually be a pretty good signing for them if Dusty wouldn't give him a ton of playing time. But it is Dusty we're talking about, so . . .

I don't know how Jones has a spot on the team. Don't the Reds have good outfield depth too?

Overweight guy known best for his pinch hitting roles, yep this sounds like Lenny Harris all over again. He'll get way too many starts this year.

They probably just want to make sure they have a player on the roster who, every time he comes to the plate, the announcers can say, "Well, Daryle has a chance to hit one into the river on a fly here!"

Oh yeah, I'm sure he will. Just saying if Dusty used him right, there's a chance he could revert back to 07 Ward.

I am so excited to be back with Dusty. Him and I are going to master the finer arts of tooth pick twirling and he is gonna play me, now that I can see the ball and hit it. Watch out for me this year, I will be tearing up an NL park near you!!!! \:D/

Dusty is getting all of his horses lined up. He needs those dudes who can handle the summer heat. Afterall, Cincy will be playing a lot of day games at Wrigley this summer.

Yep. Dusty would've been hell on wheels as a manager ca. 1985 when everyone was playing Whiteyball and the league was half black.

We'll see how Jocketty handles his dismissal.

Would anybody else be shocked if Jacque has a half way decent spring, and is the Reds primary LF next year? I think Reds fans will cry if Chris Dickerson is on the bench or in Triple A, and Jones is in LF. If Jones can get back to being the hitter he was on the Cubs in 07, he will probably make the Reds and have a big role. But if he's horrible again like last year, I don't even think Dusty can justify putting him on the team. Daryle does seem like a Dusty type guy, but he probably will take too many pitches for Dustys taste. I can see him say Daryle swing the bat man, you're a big dude who can hit the ball far. If you walk you will just clogg the bases, since your so big and slow. I dunno what Dusty does to get his GM to sign so many of the players he wants. It seemed like he did that with Hendry, and now Jocketty.

I don't think very many people are ever going to be able to be 07 Ward, including Ward himself.

People forget how damn good he was in 2007.
