Amazing how quickly someone call fall. I was thinking just two years ago that he'd for sure be a HOFer, but definitely not anymore. I can't imagine anyone recovering from how bad he has become.

What's crazy is that I honestly belief half the people on this board could have put up similar numbers as Jones last year, given the same opportunity.

He hit .161 with 1 hr, right?

I mean, what happened? Did this dude go blind?

Apparently he could still see the buffett.

There's not much insentive for "Jellyroll" Jones to get into "shape". The Dodgers are paying him 22 million over the next 6 years. Maybe he still has something to prove, but I wouldn't pay him much to prove it.

He OPS+'d at 34 last year

Even if you just take his dropoff from from '06 to '07, it's unbelievable.

Buy low baby! ;)

I'm fairly certain 99% of the people on this board would have OPSd 000 last year.

No point arguing about this really, but whatever... Even pitchers who have no apparent hitting talent whatsoever manage to luck into a hit now and then. Then again, they are athletic and coordinated enough to be extremely good at throwing a baseball, so that in itself separates them from the average person. I think there are probably some pitchers out there who are basically like an average guy off the street at the plate, though. Rich Hill is pretty horrendous. I don't know.

I think he'll bounce back a little bit this season after catching on somewhere. The Royals?

Maybe something like .240/.320/.400 but after last season he looks done. He showed no glimpses last year of being a good player.

there's really the only point that needs to be made -- a pitcher could have done what he did at the plate. Really really bad. It's also what makes baseball so interesting at times.

He outperformed the average pitcher by a good bit. And there is no chance in hell anyone on here could put up that line.

Definitely. Just saying it's not necessarily true that 99% of posters here would OPS 000. But I'm just in an argumentative mood.

Yeah, that was definitely an exaggeration, some people would draw a lucky walk or get some lucky contact. But even pitchers are around major league pitchers everyday, and they take batting practice. There may only be a handful of people here who ever played professionally at any level, and probably only a couple that have done it recently. Batting ability can disappear in a hurry, and never having seen major league pitching could be freaking nuts. That said, nobody would be able to do what Andruw did.

If I tried to hit at the MLB level, the luckiest thing that could happen would be for the first 3 pitches to be strikes so I would be gone quickly with no further chance of embarrassing myself.

i think, given enough plate appearances, i could eventually draw a walk or get hit by a pitch.

so screw you

First, let me say that a lot of ML pitchers were once the best hitters on their high school/college teams. Not too many HS kids can just pitch.

Secondly, if the bold is true....then conversely, wouldn't any of us be taking batting practice every day? I know not many of us could go to a ML team right now and even make lucky contact, but hitting every day with the help of ML hitting coaches and over the course of about 225 days of spring training and regular season, I think many of us could get to the point of hitting in the low .100s or whatever Jones hit.

Not a chance. How many people here even played beyond high school?

It's either you believe that a random A baller could come up and perform like Andruw Jones did, or that many people on here are good enough to play semi-pro baseball.

I would say the vast majority of people on here are probably below A ball level of ability. And even if you were of A ball ability at 19/20, if you're 30 now, that's gone, and isn't coming back.
