The prospect of getting Peavy makes fans salivate, but it looks like that has fallen through completely. Maybe Axelrod will be more amenable once the season starts (assuming Peavy hasn't signed with anybody else by then).

I think going after Meche or Greinke is sound. The Royals have never been opposed to letting talent go. Damon, Dye, Beltran... the list goes on.

I'd certainly take Sheets, but let's face it: the Brewers would be crazy to give him up to their division rivals.

Huh? Peavy isn't a free agent, what does his agent have to do with whether the Cubs can get him? And Sheets is a free agent, so Brewers wouldn't exactly be giving him to the Cubs.

Sean Marshall?

or did we not want to part with him in the Peavy deal because he's so valuable as a loogy

If that's the case, reminds me of Paxson obstinately not wanting to give up Deng for Bryant. :banghead:

I could be wrong, but isn't a player's agent still heavily involved in trade talks? You're right about Sheets, but it would be a huge slap in the face to Brewers fans if he went to the Cubs.

To the extent that Peavy has a no-trade, his agent will talk to the owners. But Axelrod has already been pushing for him to go to the Cubs and had nothing to do with the Padres high demands.

That, and maybe convincing his client to make the team getting him guarantee that last year in his deal.

Sheets is out of our price range now, but I'd have greatly preferred to give him ~2/30 before going 4 years for Dempster; he's really not much riskier imo.

you've got Marshall, Atkins and grab Paul Byrd or something for like 2m to give you close to league-average innings if/when Harden and Sheets take their 15 day trainers room respites.

I've been big on Sheets for a while now. Kind of a poor-man's Peavy (due mainly to the injury history; healthy they're very comparable), plus you get to keep all the players you would've sent to SD, and his contract wouldn't be any bigger than what Peavy's got left.

I'd be surprised if Peavy gets moved now that they have new ownership. Sheets and Lowe probably won't fit in the payroll, and most of the other FA options seem to off little, if any, upgrade over what we have in house. With Harden on the staff and some questions about Z's arm arising last year a guy like Smoltz or half a year of Schilling probably is too risky (albeit more attractive than Braden Looper). It seems to me that the only realistic upgrade options would have to be a trade.

So the in house options are

Marshall

Gaudin

Smardz

Hill (will at least get a chance, won't he?)

Atkins

Hart

I could see them starting the season with Smardz in the rotation until he flops and then they make a trade in late May.

Anyone think it would be possible to steal one of Minnesota's starters? Blackburn, Slowey, and Perkins seem to have a lot of potential.

I think they could have possibly gotten one of those guys for DeRosa. But, we don't have DeRosa anymore, so no.

It's a waste to go after someone like Blackburn or Sonnanstine because they won't do much better than the options we have now. If we're gonna get another pitcher, we need to go all out and get a #1 or #2 guy..... Ahheeem PEAVY!

I would love to add a young pitcher with upside. The Cubs could throw him in the 5 spot where the expectations aren't high and he could mature for 2010 when Harden is gone.

Perkins shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as Slowey, who ought to be Zach Greinke unattainable

I think we either go get Peavy, or we are starting the year with Marshall as our # 5. To me, it makes no sense to trade a decent, albiet overpriced 5th starter, and pay part of this salary, just to go out and sign some other overpriced 5th starter aka pettite, looper, redding etc. Go with Marshall until for the year, or until hes shows he doesnt have what it takes.

White Sox need a CF. How about Clayton Richard? Only 4 BB in 40 something innings in AAA

The White Sox need pitching more than the Cubs, they still don't have a 5th starter. No way the Sox would trade Richard for Pie + whoever. The Floyd trade rumors have been shot down by Kenny Williams, it would be stupid for the Sox to trade a SP unless they were getting the farm.
