Hendry mentioned that he will continue to look for another pitcher. Other than Peavy who are some legitimate candidates?

Will he look to unload some of our tradable players for a young pitcher approaching arbitration? ie. Greinke or a Type B free agent? Or will he give up their 31st draft pick for a Type A?

If he can't get Peavy does he just try to swap Pie for Olsen and put Olsen as the 5th spot?

Lets hear some ideas.

Some guys who are FA after the season that might be available through trade are:

Erik Bedard (probably has to start the year with the M's to prove health)

Jarrod Washburn (not better than Marsahall really, especially when you consider the $$$)

Kevin Millwood

Vicente Padillia

John Lackey (Highly unlikely, seeing as the Angels will be competing)

The only FA I would like us to sign would be Sheets and that would only be if it's a 1 year deal for less than $10 mil. and heavy incentives. Grienke would be great, but they will probably ask a ton. I have to think Hendry has an idea of 2-3 guys who he is considering, it's not that Marshall isn't a capable #5, but you know that Harden/Z are going to miss time. It weakens our team when you can't use Marshall to replace them (as he is in the rotation already) and we would have to use Gaudin/Shark/Guzman (weakening our questionable bullpen) and if Harden or Z are out for an extended period of time we could have a pretty ugly rotation. Especially when you consider Dempster will regress some and Lilly has his moments.

I'm not sure the Royals are trading starters unless they receive massive depth in return. Who do they have besides Greinke and Meche? I doubt Hochevar will turn the corner this year.

I actually have faith in Hendry following his M.O. of the last two years:

1) Hendry signs a mediocre player.

2) Everyone on the board wails and gnashes his teeth.

3) Player puts up All-Star season and becomes a bargain.

Too bad the unit signed with the giants. When we first heard about the Cubs having interest in him during the Peavy stuff, we were all amped out about Peavy so he didn't sound that great. He seems like he would have been a pretty good option now

when kevin hart reaches his 10th start, we're all going to wish he had randy

If Kevin Hart even starts more than 10 games in his whole Cubs career I will strongly consider never watching/attending a Cubs game for the rest of my life.

I still think a Peavy deal is in the works. If that doesn't work, I would love to get Greinke. I do think there should be a decent pitcher available (barring a Peavy deal) using our many trade chips (Pie, Hart, Wuertz, Atkins, Castillo, Hoffpauir, eyc.).

i'm a pretty big Guzman fan-boy, but i wouldn't stick him in the rotation (because of injury concerns).

Greinke would be great, but i don't know what KC needs or is looking for right now. Pie might be a starting point since they just took a devistating loss in Gathright. :^o

Guzman put up a line of 26 IP, 33 H, 16 ER, 11 BB, 18 K, 1 WP, 4 HR, 29 GO-24 FO - 5.54 ERA playing in Venezuela over the winter. Is there an issue with his stuff/velocity at this point or was this a matter of being rusty, not hitting his spots? Should his name even be mentioned when discussing 5th starter candidates?

It's helpful to look at the actual game logs. In the first part of the season, he pitched very well. Then in one game he was left in to pitch 6 innings. After that appearance, he pitched poorly. If nothing else, that should dictate that he be a reliever and not a starter.

Ben Sheets

Jake Peavy

Agreed with the above pitchers. If not, put Marshall in the rotation and sign a lefty reliever. We probably need a better lefty reliever anyway.

Pettitte turned down $10MM from the Yankees. He's way too expensive.

I know I'm being optimistic, but maybe he just didn't want to play there?

Or, more likely, he's insulted that he'd be offered so little when everybody else is getting the motherload.
