Sure, everyone will try to lure Schottenheimer, Cowher and Holmgren out of retirement, but I think with the success of guys like Tomlin, Smith, Sparano, and Harbaugh you will see a different approach this offseason. You're going to see some 1st time coaches get a shot, as it has been provent that you don't have to be experienced to have success. Defensive coordinators will get the first shots at jobs, because it is becoming a pretty strong trend that they make the best head coaches.

Also will be interesting to see how teams value QBs in the draft. With Ryan and Flacco leading teams to the playoffs, I wonder if QBs will shoot up draft boards and even get handed jobs to start their careers, especially in places like Detroit, SF, KC, and even Seattle.

Like I mentioned earlier, watch out for Schwartz and, perhaps, Rex Ryan (Baltimore DC) for head coaching positions. I'd be surprised if both don't have head jobs next season.

As for QBs, Bradford and Stafford (assuming they both leave early) will certainly be top picks and will likely be handed the reigns immediately.

The Jets will have a long period of losing now (5-10 years) is my prediction.

have you paid attention to the way the nfl works? nobody loses 5-10 years in a row unless they are completely dysfunctional in the front office (cardinals, raiders). hell even the raiders were in a super bowl not that long ago. people were saying the falcons were going to be a disaster for years after their star qb ended up in jail and their head coach ran out on them, and they're back in the playoffs a year later.

Teams with at least 5 consecutive losing seasons since 2000:

Lions

49ers

Cardinals

Raiders

Texans

Buffalo could be added to this list next year. Cincinnati had was in the middle fo a 5 season losing streak when 2000's started.

This list gets much larger if I either:

Cut the criteria down to 4 consecutive seasons, or

Count 8-8 seasons

So it's rare, but 5-6 losing seasons in a row is gonna be on the long side. I don't think above 6 is probably realistic.

Plus, we're talking about the Jets, one of the worst run franchises in the NFL for decades. They have as many 10 loss seasons as 10 win seasons this decade, and spent almost the entire 90's under .500. If anybody can sustain losing, it's the Jets.

The NFL is set up so it's possible for teams to recover quickly, and difficult to sustain success. But just as Philly, Indy, New England and Pittsburgh have found ways to generally outperform the norm over an extended period, there are plenty of teams that have underformed and failed to win for extended periods.

I guess I'll put this here.

Wade Phillips is staying on in Dallas, but he and Jerry Jones had a "man to man talk" and Phillips is going to change some things.

Phillips said he and Jones already "talked man to man" about what went wrong and what needs to be done about it. All he's decided so far is that he needs a plan; he's only started putting it together. However, he said both coordinators will be back and he expects all the star players to return.

Considering his laid-back demeanor and reputation as a players' coach, Phillips seems to be saying he plans to get tough.

How does Marvin Lewis still have a job? He is a defense minded coach and they arent very good nor have they ever been since he took over. Since he left Baltimore they havent missed him either.

I'm not sure they'll fire him, but they should. Or at least get a GM and take away his personnel decisions.

I would have relieved Phillips of his duties after trying to send out the punting team on the 4th and inches play down over 20 points.

Garrett was more at fault than Phillips was. He called a WR screen twice on 3rd and 1 and almost refused to run up the middle after having quite a bit of success doing that early on.

Apparently NFLN is reporting that the Cowboys have given the Lions permission to speak with Jason Garrett.

This is good stuff. The Raiders have requested permission from the Giants to interview Kevin Gilbride for the head coach position. In the same story, Raider officials are saying there's a very good shot that Tom Cable will keep the job full-time.

I don't think those are two very good options.

With Davis carrying on like the crazy coot that he is, those might be the best options they can scare up.

I love the term "player's coach."

Someone was being very diplomatic when he coined that one. It means "won't make anyone do anything."

There's not likely to be good candidate up for the Raiders job as long as Davis is alive. No decent/reputable coach is going to risk going there and no coach who had a rough time at his previous job is going to go there looking to bounce back because coaching the Raiders isn't going to help a reputation.

On another Davis note, I saw on ESPN's bottom line something about Parcells potentially leaving the Dolphins if the team gets sold and that a few teams were interested with the Raiders specifically mentioned with a couple others. I would be all for this solely to see the interaction between Parcells and Davis.

i think HBO should return to dallas (or Oxnard, I guess) for hard knocks this year, what a circus it's going to be

Or worded differently: "We don't want to actually fire him after we hyped him as head-coach-in-waiting, but if someone wants to take him off our hands we'll help him pack."

The term doesn't mean that but it is often missed used. There are coaches who can motivate you and at times be harsh but for the most part the players love him and will do anything for him. Then there are coaches we are like a drill sargent. They motivate you but they aren't exactly someone you love. Both types can be highly successful with the first being a player's coach.

People (media especially) nowadays throw player's coach on any coach who is soft on his players and isn't a disciplinarian. They don't use the term correctly in my opinion.

You gotta love Favre coming out of retirement just to get a coach fired and further depress an already desperate fan base.

Gotta love how the Madden curse got confused and just wrecked two franchises.

Would the Jets have been better off with Pennington this year?

Slightly, maybe. I don't think Pennington is solely the reason the Dolphins are better. It's a mixture of numerous good moves (Fasano, Ayodele, Pennington, etc) and much better coaching.

And much, much, much better health. Remember, the Dolphins were starting their 6th string running back, 3rd string quarterback, #3 and #4 wide receivers, #3 tight end, #5 and #6 safeties, #2 and #3 corners, #5 and #6 linebackers, #4 and #5 defensive tackles by week 10 last year. Dolphins were not a good team from jump, but they weren't 1-15 bad by any stretch of the imagination with adequate quarterback play and health.

Good point, I had forgotten about the injuries. Either way, Pennington wasn't the savior he's made out to be - he was a nice addition, but there were numerous other factors as to why the Dolphins are 11-5.

The OLine was pathetic most of this season, Garrett didn't seem like the same OCoach.

does anyone else think tony sparano sounds like tony soprano

Little more articulate.

I say Soprano half the time and then think wait a minute ...

High marks to Marinelli for standing up in front of the media and facing the music yesterday. Had to be hard for the guy. By comparison, no one has heard from Mangini (except for a closed-door team meeting) and Romeo issued a written statement (which, at least, was contrite).

I haven't been able to find it online, but the cover of the NY Post cracked me up this morning:

Woody

For Brett

It's got a picture of the owner, Woody Johnson, and Brett Favre inside a cartoon heart.
