I figured this would be an appropriate thread to make since I believe we had one last year, but if the mods find it too much then feel free to merge it.

This is for any coaching moves that have been made, rumored, etc. And there's a lot of news today:

Eric Mangini is out as Jets head coach.

Rod Marinelli (no surprise) is gone.

Browns GM Phil Savage is also out, along with Romeo Crennel. ESPN is reporting that Cleveland will go hard after Bill Cowher as head coach, and Scott Pioli (of New England) as GM.

Mike Singletary has been named the 49ers' head coach, dropping the interim tag.

And Bill Parcells could opt out of his deal with Miami if owner Wayne Huizenga sells the team. Numerous teams will certainly be interested in him at that point.

You gotta love Favre coming out of retirement just to get a coach fired and further depress an already desperate fan base.

Very true, very true.

Actually, I saw on ESPN yesterday that Favre wasn't exactly thrilled with playing under Mangini. The Jets have said they want Brett back, so I wonder how much that had to do with the "Mangenius'" exit? I doubt it had much to do with it, honestly, but it may affect Favre's decision to retire/return.

I dunno...it gave them some excitement to start the year...maybe the low at the end is even lower...but at least they had some kind of high to start the year off with. I remember Mike Greenberg hardly being able to contain his excitement.

They tanked down the stretch but damn. You take over a 4-12 team, win 10, 4 and 9 and get the axe?

I really hope Favre returns there again.

Mangini never had great talent there either. The Jets are getting better, but they've never had a very good QB, the running backs have been serviceable and the receivers are decent.

Defensively they're improving, but still not better than what they showed this year.

Mangini isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread like everybody thought when he was first hired from the Patriots, but I thought he should get one more year.

i wonder how thrilled mangini was to have a veteran quarterback putting up a qb rating in the bottom third of the nfl and throwing 4 more INTs than anyone in the league.

That fall was so predictable it was almost less fun to watch, but not quite. Favre isn't a good QB. He gives games away repeatedly. I missed him in GB this year because even if the Packers outplayed Chicago in recent years, you could count on Brett throwing the ball to Urlacher or Briggs and giving the Bears hope. He did that crap all year, and because Mangini didn't accept it, Brett cried.

But, that QB is Brett Favre and he made the Pro Bowl . . .

His specific comment was that he kept getting called into the principal's office and called out in front of the students.

Yeah, sounds a bit childish to me.

The Jets will have a long period of losing now (5-10 years) is my prediction. Mangini is a great coach and they are extremely dimwitted to fire him. They deserve to lose now.

Let's see team goes 4-12 so Mangini is hired. Team then goes 10-6 in the first season using practically the same team they had the season before. The next season they have a lot of injuries including Pennington being hurt. Even when Pennington got back he wasn't the same which is why he was benched a couple games. How is this Mangini's fault? Its not and the team goes 4-12 again. This season he gets a new QB but its actually an old QB who was carrying a media circus with him. The team goes 9-7 and would have made playoffs if the old/new QB hadn't fallen off.

Bottom line is he took over a 4-12 team and proceeding to average almost 8 wins in three seasons using practically the same amount of talent.

have you paid attention to the way the nfl works? nobody loses 5-10 years in a row unless they are completely dysfunctional in the front office (cardinals, raiders). hell even the raiders were in a super bowl not that long ago. people were saying the falcons were going to be a disaster for years after their star qb ended up in jail and their head coach ran out on them, and they're back in the playoffs a year later.

With the Chargers making the playoffs, Rivers should have been a Prow-Bowler. Pro-Bowl balloting should wait until the regular season is over.

Rivers definitely should have been a Pro Bowler and Favre shouldn't have been near the ballot.

Would the Jets have been better off with Pennington this year?

Slightly, maybe. I don't think Pennington is solely the reason the Dolphins are better. It's a mixture of numerous good moves (Fasano, Ayodele, Pennington, etc) and much better coaching.

Teams with at least 5 consecutive losing seasons since 2000:

Lions

49ers

Cardinals

Raiders

Texans

Buffalo could be added to this list next year. Cincinnati had was in the middle fo a 5 season losing streak when 2000's started.

This list gets much larger if I either:

Cut the criteria down to 4 consecutive seasons, or

Count 8-8 seasons

So it's rare, but 5-6 losing seasons in a row is gonna be on the long side. I don't think above 6 is probably realistic.

Or look at the Dolphins. 1-15 one year, division champions the next.

Sure, everyone will try to lure Schottenheimer, Cowher and Holmgren out of retirement, but I think with the success of guys like Tomlin, Smith, Sparano, and Harbaugh you will see a different approach this offseason. You're going to see some 1st time coaches get a shot, as it has been provent that you don't have to be experienced to have success. Defensive coordinators will get the first shots at jobs, because it is becoming a pretty strong trend that they make the best head coaches.

Also will be interesting to see how teams value QBs in the draft. With Ryan and Flacco leading teams to the playoffs, I wonder if QBs will shoot up draft boards and even get handed jobs to start their careers, especially in places like Detroit, SF, KC, and even Seattle.
