It seems to me that it was a stand pat or go all in scenario that depended greatly on what happened yesterday actually happening. I'm guessing there wasn't going to be much middle ground.

I hope Jay Cutler is also a great receiver, offensive lineman, and every position on defense.

HAHA bitter Packer fan face, I LOVE IT!

I can't say I've kept up on Torry Holt as of late. What's the general consensus on him?

Wayyyy too many miles on him.

yeah, i think i'm a lot more hesitant than many here. the guy isn't as washed up as Harrison, but he's getting up there.

I love Dilfer talking about all these holes we needed to fill with the picks we gave up. Don't we still have like 8 draft picks?

Jersey is conspicuous in his absence.

Yeah, where the heck is goony?

My main problem is with Schlereth. Dilfer sounded like he was just going along with what stink told him to say in the back room.

I didn't hear Schlereth piling on Cutler when he was still a Bronco. But now he's not going to help a team but Orton is really good. I mean come on, what a ridiculous display of stupidity.

Schlereth is a known moron and a homer. He's always been bears hater. I don't know why this dolts remarks are surprising anyone.

Couple things.

I look at Pace like I do Milton Bradley. He'll be really good when he is 100% healthy. The problem is with the Bears, Pace has to stay healthy for the team to be successful.

Really? I look at it like this: even if Pace is out, we can still slide Williams to LT and Shaffer @ RT, and be in better shape than we were last year. And we're much deeper @ OG, regardless.

Remember, we were a pretty good offense for the 1st half of '08:

29,20,27,24,34,20,48,27. And that was with a substandard St. Clair and a tattered Tait @ OT. And Orton @ QB. I think people forget that.

I'm just spit-ballin here, but if he's past his baggage/wrongdoing (which i doubt), you know who wouldn't be a horrible #2 QB who could also come in and run a hell of a wildcat... Mike Vick.

Because they are so clearly and irrefutably idiotic this time.

If Cutler can hit Hester in stride on a go route once a game, I'll be thrilled with the trade.

Greg Olsen is about to fulfill a whole lot more of his potential.

I wish I was able to read Aaron Schatz's take on the deal, as I respect his opinion a lot more than Schlereth or Dilfer (or Peter King, etc.). Here's why I like the deal, even if it's for more than I was originally expecting:

- Cutler is arguably the best player traded like this, possibly ever. The Herschel Walker deal was bigger in manpower, and did a lot more for Dallas with the picks, but Walker really never panned out. Bledsoe was traded after a nasty concussion at the age of 30. Joe Montana was traded late in his career. I can't think of another scenario where a team made a trade that instantly gave them a just-entering-his-prime QB that's already top 5 in the league.

- Cutler grew up a Bears fan and shouldn't feel as if his services aren't wanted here, so I don't think his attitude will be an issue (Heck, one of his big draws at draft time was that he was a high character guy...this feels a lot like a John Elway situation. All was quickly forgiven with Elway.)

- Cutler should quickly be able to get accustomed to the Bears offense with 2 former college teammates on the team with Williams and Bennett. This can only mean good things for Bennett, really.

- With the Pace signing, along with the other OL signings, the Bears can focus drafting defensive players, and won't have to pay out first-round money for a pick, which really makes the money in this deal a wash (Cutler's contract is very reasonable for 3 years). I'd still like to see the Bears sign/trade for a WR.

Why am I not excited about this?

still a questionable OL, crappy receivers, and an aging defense.

Bingo. Some people are acting like Cutler is Flutie, Montana, Young, McMahon, Manning and Brady all rolled into one. It's just hard for me to get excited over Cutler since the Bears have had like 30 QBs since I started watching as a little kid in the 70's.

Plus I'm not excited about Pace either. He was great 8 to 10 years ago, but now he's getting pretty old in a position that has a very short shelf life.

i think you need to remember that Cutler is only 25 years old. the only other QB's to throw over 4,000 yards each of the last two seasons are P. Manning, Brees and Warner. he's signed for at least three years and the Bears have time to fill those other holes while he's still in his prime. Forte is only 23. Olsen is 24. Hester is 26. the Bears actually have some really nice young talent on offense.

That's exactly why you should be excited about this.

You're talking about a 26 year old pro-bowl quarterback with a rocket arm (lolz) who is past his growing pain years and is just about to enter his prime.

Put this into perspective. Think about the QB's we've started over the past few years. I mean, Grossman and Orton were significantly better than a bunch of those guys. And Cutler is light years better than both of them.

So then, by your logic, you wouldn't be able to get excited over Peyton Manning either. Because after all, the Bears have had 30 QBs since you were a kid.

People are excited about actually acquiring a pro bowl QB in his prime for the first time in their lives. I don't see how that's unwarranted.

Cutler's numbers last year, in terms of QB rating, #of yards, attempts, completions....

All better than any other QB in the entire history of the Chicago Bears.

Excuse me for being excited.

I'm not saying I'm not pleased by this move. I just think we need to step back and be cautious. Sorry for not chugging the Kool Aid by the gallon.

Plus his little temper tantrum/drama in Denver makes me wonder if he'll pull that cr*p here.

I'm excited about the deal. However, I don't think you can really evaluate whether this was a smart deal or not for 2-3 years. All of these blowhards in the media already declaring this a great or horrible move are all just being sensationalist for their job security. We'll see how the draft picks that the Broncos get end up panning out. Plus, as I think someone previously mentioned, the Bears have a better track record finding gems after the 2d round than in the first round. Angelo is actually one of the better GMs in the league finding good talent in the second half of the draft. Too bad he never could draft as well at the top.

Overall, my prediction is that both teams will be content with this deal in 3 years.

well, there's nothing wrong with be cautious with your optimism.

i'm not as bothered by the situation in Denver because his rep coming out of college was the complete opposite of that. really the only thing i'm worried about as far as Cutler goes is an injury, but that would go for any good QB.
