Considering the Bears were able to pull it off without trading Urlacher or Briggs I'm quite willing to part with the draft picks. They still have enough picks to get good players with. The trick is drafting the right players.

What happens to Brett Basanez now?

What? This changed nothing with Basanez.

I thought he came to Chicago to compete for the starting QB job. That's obviously not true now.

He was around to compete for a spot as the third QB, which he can still do.

I think its fairly irrelevant what ends up happening to brett basanez.

I don't want Basanaz or Heine as backup QB. I don't really want to draft a rookie QB to be 2nd string QB. So that leaves either a vet FA QB, or a QB that is one th market. I know the Dolphins are basically giving away John Beck (former 2nd rd pick) for any pick), but I am not thrill with that option. There some names on the FA market that could interests the Bears (Leftiwch and Losman could be interesting options as backup QBs)such as Kyle Boller, Charlie Frye, Byron Leftwich, JP Losman, Patrick Ramsey. Should the Bears look for one of these options, or wait till later in the summer and see if there are any other decent options available?

Cannonball!!! The Bears didnt just make a splash this offseason, they threw a 450 pound man in the water.

Jay [expletive] Cutler.

25 year old Qbs just arent available like this. This was a no brainer to me, im not going to look back. 1st round picks arent slam dunks anyway. Jay Cutler is a SLAM DUNK talent. A bird in hand is better than 2 in the bush in my mind on this one, plus its the quarterback. The freaking most important position by far in the football. Cutler will be a FA at 28, players like him don't hit the open market, this is a 7-8 year player the Bears got.

Devin Hester on the deep ball baby, connection city. I hear criticisms about the Bears offense and Jay Cutler doesnt have any weapons. Clark and Olsen are the best or one of the best TE tandems in the NFL. Plus hes got Matt Forte. Forte is a weapon.

News conference tomorrow at 6.

WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO

So this is what it feels like to have a real QB.

Never thought I'd say it but, thanks Jerry Angelo.

I've said since the problems between Cutler and the Broncos arosed, that if Angelo didn't make a serious offer and/or acquired Jay Culter, he should resign as GM and leave Chicago. Since he did acquired Cutler, he has bought himselfmore time to build this thing up.

That was exactly my feelings as well.

If this doesn't work, I think it goes without saying that Lovie/Angelo will be gone.

One thing to note. Cutler played at Vanderbilt with Earl Bennett and Chris Williams. The Cutler to Bennett combo put up 79 catches for 876 yards and 9 TDs in Bennett's 1st season (I can't remember if he came out early so he was either a Freshman or Sophomore). Bennett and Cutler are really good friends and last year Cutler showed up in Nashville to throw to Bennett on his pro day, despite being an NFL QB already and being 2 years removed from playing with Earl. Clearly there is some good rapport there.

Cutler also is good buddies with Williams and lobbied for him on draft day last year, apparently.

That's a lot to give up, hopefully the OL protects him until the rest of the team is improved and then the Bears can do some damage. :)

Personally, the Bears didn't give up too much. The Bears don't do well with first rd picks (Haynes, Grossman, Enis, Terrell, McNown, and the list goes on) and seeing as Urlacher, Harris and Williams are the only three 1st rd picks still on the roster that the Bears picked, it is obviously the Bears don't highly value the first rd pick. They are also thinking that if everything goes to plan then next yr's first rd pick will be closer to the low 20, high 30s (a low first rd pick or high 2nd rd pick however you view it), which means next's yr's first rd pick has higher value this yr, then it could have next yr. Think of it of as selling high. Orton is a serviceable, capable NFL QB who is going to be a FA after next season. The ONE pick that seems to hurt the Bears the most, is including the 3rd round pick. The Bears are prolly one of the best team at finding quality players (or NFL starting players) beyond the first rd. So for the Bears giving up a 3rd pick is akin to another team giving up a 1st rd pick. So, IMO, the Bears gave up two picks they don't like and would have lower value (2 first rd picks) if they waited, a serviceable QB, and a mid 3rd pick. To me, the Bears got a bargain for a Pro Bowl caliber QB.

The only reason I'm upset about the draft picks is because I'm such a draft junkie. It's like a holiday for me.

honestly, that's how i feel too. and even then, i'm not that upset ;)

I'm really happy with this because I won't sit around watching Mel Kiper yap for the first seven hours before the Bears would've made their first round pick.

The Bears actually made an offensive move to change the entire complexion of the offense and upgraded the protection on the same day. With an accurate deep ball, this will greatly influence Hester as Orton missed so much on Hester wide open 45 yards down field. They still need a #1 and combine that with a RG and the offense will be a balance and productive threat.

Who would've thought that there would be an Orton vs Simms QB battle, that didn't involve the Chicago Bears?

This is so fantastic. Way to steal the opening weekend spotlight from baseball, Bears.
