Cardinals to pursue righty Burnett

After acquiring Greene, Redbirds reportedly focusing on pitching

By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

FOXsports.com reported on Monday that the Cardinals are a "serious bidder" for free-agent right-hander A.J. Burnett. St. Louis pursued Burnett the last time he was a free agent, in the winter of 2005-06, when he signed with Toronto.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told reporters on Thursday that the club is seeking pitching over hitting after trading for shortstop Khalil Greene. Perhaps more tellingly, Mozeliak also acknowledged the possibility that St. Louis might use all of the remaining $15 million available in its 2009 payroll on a single player.

On the other hand, St. Louis has a long-standing reluctance to guarantee five years to any pitcher, especially a pitcher not already within the organization. It was the Cards' unwillingness to go beyond four years and with an option that caused them to fall short with Burnett last time around. That deal included an opt-out clause that is the reason Burnett is a free agent once again.

there will be a taker for marquis

Maybe not until after the free agent pitchers get off the mkt though. If the Yanks get CC (likely) but no one else (i.e., Burnett and Lowe), I could see Cashman calling Hendry about Marquis.

2:31pm: Rosenthal confirms it. The Tigers reached a one-year agreement with Everett for $1MM plus incentives. The deal is pending a physical.

Pretty good deal for the Tigers.

They are getting cheaper and younger at both SS and C

Everett has started about 100 games the last two years combined, his defense is way down(though still well above average) from his injuries, he's always been a disaster at the plate, and he'll be 32 years old come spring training. There's not a lot of upside to adding him, although at a year and a million there's no real harm unless you're under really tight budgetary restrictions.

Well he's younger and much much cheaper than Renteria, but yeah he's been bad offensively at least the last few years

He could easily be a good late inning defensive replacement. $1m isn't a burdensome price to pay for that kind of a bench player.

That's a very optimistic way of describing the difference between Renteria and Everett. From 34 to 32 year old is not exactly a youth movement when you consider how bad Everett is at staying on the field since he turned 30.

He snapped his leg in a freak accident.

Ok, freak accident or not, a 32 year old who has had a major leg injury at that stage is not very promising as a younger player. And that's not even talking about how bad he is in the batters box. Younger? Literally, not practically. Cheaper? Yes. Better in any baseball way than Rent, no.

i read elswhere from a Tigers fan that they were interested in Wood... I'd support that (for a team not being the Cubs of course)

5:06pm: Cubs manager Lou Piniella asked Seattle reporters today whether Ibanez can play right field.

Seriously? How about asking some scouts Lou?

You mean Hughes should be asking the pro scouts, Hughes should relay it to Hendry and Hendry should pass it onto Lou. Or just have Hendry or more likely one of his assistants look up his scouting report from the database.

Since he can't play LF, I'd say the popular vote would be that he can't play RF, either.

How are they supposed to jack up his price that way?

Looking to fill one of its biggest holes, the Cubs met with free-agent outfielder Milton Bradley, a source linked to the negotiations told ESPNdeportes.com.

The source informed that the meeting took place Sunday night at a hotel in Las Vegas, but did not report if the team made a formal offer.

Bradley, 30, batted .321 with 22 home runs and 77 RBI in 126 games with the Rangers in 2008.

I'm confused, didn't the OP say to post non-Cubs rumors in here only? Not that I care, but it'd save me time from bumping other threads..

Yeah, I think he did, but I was too lazy to bump it. :-$

By all means, post Cubs rumors in here too. I was just following the format of previous years rumor threads.

There's no need to be rude about it.

It's unlikely because it was a leg injury, but if he regains the range he had with Houston, that'll be the best contract signed this offseason.
