i'm really not looking forward to the time when my favorite team will be changing coaches every 3-5 years

I don't think that will happen. We're gonna hire from within (Tom Bradley) and give him a very long leash, because Paterno will be sitting in the background making it so.

Or do you mean 20 years down the road?

I'm sure Gill's fine (heck, I'm sure he's better than fine), but at the moment, he is what Brady Hoke was last year (took a horrible program to a bowl), with the addendum that Buffalo managed to sneak out of a horrible division and beat us, which we didn't have the benefit of last year. And no one was clamoring for Hoke to get a big-time job.

Wasn't Hoke a darkhorse for Michigan? And Michigan's a much better job than Auburn.

Gill was a darkhorse for UCLA last year.

Not that UCLA is a better job than Auburn or Michigan but they aren't the worst BCS football program around.

Well JoePa won't be alive 20 years from now. I think the boosters will get the upper hand at PSU just like they have just about everywhere else.

Buffalo was one of the worst programs in D1 when Gill took over. Now they're bowling. What do you expect from the guy?

It's extremely impressive, but when you consider it's the MAC that he did it in, you have to take it with a grain of salt.

I would have probably put Gill only behind Mike Leach considering the list of coaches Auburn was linked to at some point. But I may have an irrational love of Mike Leach, so I may be wrong on that one.

It would have been, at least, defendable to hire Leach, Muschamp or Spurrier over Gill, though. It's not defendable at all to hire Chizik over Gill.

Gill should, and I think will, get a BCS conference job very soon. UCLA would have been a very interesting job for him - a lot of tradition with a great recruiting base, but hasn't been great nationally really since Karl Dorrel took over (correct me if I'm wrong on that, I'm going purely off the top of my head).

Hoke's name was tossed around in media rumor mills for that job because that's who employed him before Ball State did (as associate head coach/defensive line I think). I'm friends with the beat writer for our student paper and never got any indication that he was considered for it.

Washington State is in a far worse spot than IU right now and Washington is probably a little behind them too. I would say that whoever UW hires will probably be a better coach than Bill Lynch, though.

The last two years, sure, IU has been better than the Apple Cup pair. But both have been to three bowls this decade -- including a Rose Bowl appearance each. IU has one embarrassing Insight Bowl appearance since 1993. Vanderbilt and Duke are perhaps IU's saving grace on this front.

Good point - especially on Duke. They haven't won much more than 10 games this decade before this year.

Ball State hires offensive coordinator Stan Parrish as head coach.

I didn't see this coming. I didn't think Parrish wanted to be a head coach. Him hanging around should hopefully minimize recruiting defections though. It could even help keep Nate Davis around, though I doubt it'll actually work. Still, I'm glad they could get Parrish. Takes a tiny amount of the sting out of this whole situation.

Oakland offensive line coach James Cregg has departed the Raiders to take over (I assume) as the offensive line coach at Tennessee. This pissed Oakland Head Coach Tom Cable off quite a bit, apparently.

I’m pissed. That’s the best way to put it,” Cable said. “Quite frankly, that’s the only way I can put it.

You’ve got to understand offensive linemen. This is our world. If I can speak freely here, it’s about pride, it’s about commitment, it’s about trusting everybody next to you. So, to walk your @** out of here is about as bad a deal as you could possibly do to that group of guys.

When asked if he intended on talking to Kiffin, Cable said, “Oh, yes.”

Know anything about this guy soccer?

U-Dub's going to be pretty good next year. They're going to go bowling and will probably finish in the top half of the Pac 10. They weren't good few years before this year, but they weren't classic Hoosier. I think they go 7-6 or 8-5 next year. I really do.

as if Cable will have a job there next year. LOL

If he does, Al Davis will tire of him three or four games in and then he'll get fired too.

Maybe Norv Turner will be available for them by then.

You think Sarkisian is that good?

Your post just cuts off mid-sentence by the way.

UW didn't want to tackle or hold onto the ball when OU played them earlier in the year. Sarkisian needs to give them a severe attitude adjustment before they start winning games.

I edited in. Washington was down to like their 100th quarterback at one point this year. They lose Jake Locker, who is probably one of the top dozen or so college quarterbacks in the country. He's certainly one of the most valuable and was growing into a stud this season. Washington losing Locker would be like Florida losing Tebow last season. I mean Locker nearly ran for a thousand yards last season. His passing stunk, but he was a freshman thrown to the wolves. Rapid development his next season was only expected. He's tremendously gifted. They almost knocked off BYU with him at the beginning of this season. Until he threw the ball in the air and got flagged, god that was a joke call seriously. When he went down the offense evaporated. He'll get another year of development under a Sarkisian, whose specialty is quarterbacks. We're going to see quite a different Washington offense next year. They'll be able to put points on the board with every one in the conference, outside of USC. Sarkisian and Locker will mean that much. The defense could be poor and they'd still win a fair share of games. If the defense improves significantly, a huge turnaround the first year wouldn't be a shocker. But they look real good for 2010, well better two year outlook than any 0 fer team in history. The pieces are in place at Washington. I think they go 7-6 or 8-5 next season. I think they go 9-4 or 10-3 in 2010 and get back in the top 25, provided Locker doesn't blow up or leave early. Washington's going to be tested early though next year, with a tough nonconference slate.

I still think a big jump will wait til the year after next. Give Sarkisian at least a year to turn that thing around.

Not sure when that will be.

I hear Cowher's and (from extremely back channel whispers) Saban's names associated with that job when it opens. I don't see either of those being a 3-5 year job. Well... Saban, maybe.

I figured you'd like that the Raiders got pissed off. But it's not really a good thing that you've never heard of him before.
