I mean, sure, he was a bit shaky at times, and he wasn't exactly an ace, but I loved during the beginning of the year everyone would write off a Marquis start as a loss. I particularily remember when it was Marquis vs. Halladay and everyone, including me wrote it off as a loss. But Marquis went something like 7 IP 2 ER and the Cubs won. He always seemed to prove everyone wrong. He had a great game against the Dodgers in the final game of that 7 game road trip, and he was the one who broke our 6 game losing streak. When he's on, I enjoy watching him pitch. I agree that he needs to go if peavy is going to be traded here, but I will always love the fact that it always seemed like he was reading NSBB threads and determined to prove us wrong.

Wasn't his ERA in the second half 3.8ish?

he's not as horrible as people make him out to be. he's a servicable 5th starter. the only problem is that he's not worth his contract, and hendry was foolish for giving it to him.

but marquis had his moments as a cub. i won't miss him though.

Rocket pretty much nailed it.

If you compare the average statistics of major league pitchers, Marquis is easily a very very good #5 SP, and even qualifies as a strong #4 starter for most MLB teams. He can throw 200 innings, does it at league average to slightly above league average numbers in terms of ERA+...he's a very solid MLB pitcher.

The problem is he just isn't worth that contract. Would I miss him? No. But if we do not acquire any more SP this offseason (i.e. Peavy), I don't really like the idea of just dumping him for scraps unless that entire contract is taken off our books (which is unlikely.) Starting pitching is a luxury the Cubs enjoy right now, and with injury prone Harden around, we need to keep as much depth as possible.

I'd like to keep him around myself. If we trade Marshall for Peavy, then Marquis becomes our #6 starter when Zambrano/Harden miss their 30 combined stats. If not those starts are, apparently, not going to Kevin Hart because he's in the Peavy trade, not going to Chad Gaudin because he's apparently getting non-tendered. So apparently they're going to go to Mitch Atkins or Jeff Samardzija. The former sucks and the latter causes our already weakened bullpen to lose their second best option.

I'll always remember the CG shutout against I think the Pirates in April/May of 07. The final score was 1-0 and all us Cub fans were like "wtf" at the time. The the second half of the season happened.

He seems like a nice guy though, and I love his NY accent.

As Meph mentioned the Cubs need guys around who can eat some innings and Marquis has a rubber arm and production as a #5 which are the qualities the Cubs need.

For the Cubs rotation it looks like they are after, he doesn't have a role but for teams with lesser rotations (if they acq'd Peavy) he has more value for other teams looking to be a #5 starter with 180+IP.

I've never considered him to be a nice guy based on his actions of the past, crying about not making the post-season roster in STL as well as not being able to co-exist with Duncan and Mazzone. You prob. have to ask B. Miles from a media standpoint, but I found him to be a very selfish player based on his past actions.

Who does co-exist with the St. Louis coaching staff though?

My favorite Cubs game ever attended was 4th row behind home plate at Pac Bell, to watch Marquis v Lincecum. Lincecum cruised through 8 shutout innings (I don't remember if it was 2 hits or 4, but he was as solid as he's ever been), and Marquis only gave up a single early run. Cubs broke through on Lincecum in the 9th, lit up the bullpen, won 5-1 on what I thought would be a sure waste of the best seats I'll ever have for a Cubs game.

But no, I wouldn't miss him.

That game was awesome. I went to bed after the Cubs went 1-2-3 in the 8th because I had to get up early for a presentation with a prospective client and I figured the Cubs were just helpless. When I finally got online the next day, I had this wild idea to, instead of looking up the final score, read the last 5 pages on the NSBB game thread in order. I fully expected to see a loss, but when I realized they were mounting a rally, it was a really really great read.

Jason Marquis has been an above avg starter (ERA+ wise) for the Cubs. He's earned his contract.

Not only does ERA+ not tell the whole story, but average to slightly above average starters do not deserve 21 million over 3 years.

I think Marquis and Peavy are mutually exclusive. If the Cubs trade for Peavy I hope they can hold on to Marshall or Gaudin for that role.

All I had to do is look at the title of the thread and say " hell no " ..The guy is getting payed wayyy more than he's worth and yet he whines and cries about everything. He's a typical A-hole New Yorker...He had those few moments when he actually surprised me and put aside my dislike for the guy like during that Giants game against Lincenum but other than that he's one of those guys you have to accept being a Cub but cannot stand.. See : Theriot and Howry

I'll miss him giving up a couple of runs, and then getting them back by driving in a couple when he comes up to bat with a double. Which I think only happened once, but I always think it's awesome to see a pitcher hit the crap out of a ball

So yeah, I'll kind of miss his offense out of the 9-slot

I actually think his contract isn't that bad for what he has done. If he were a FA right now I bet he'd get something similar. My main problem is that at the time we signed him he was coming off a year in which his ERA was over 6 and he didn't make the Card's playoff roster. There is no reason to give a guy coming off that kind of year a 3 year 21 million dollar deal.

Theriot? Explain.

Im just sayin as an example...I do not like him,but I accept him..Theres quite a few people on here that feel the same way and people on here that love him..Howry is on a whole different level though. thank god hes gone

and yet we just paid a slightly above average starter $52 million over 4 years. That deal makes Marquis look like a bargain.
