My Dad was telling me over the phone the other day that ticket prices have gone way up. Last year I bought the September Cardinals game from him and it was 30 something dollars. He told me those tickets were $56 now.

Must be one of the new Platinum-level games ... nothing like shelling out >$100 to take your sweetheart out to the ol' ballpark. That's pretty much the cost of a 360/PS3 game for roughly 3 hours of live entertainment.

Of course, when the payroll is bumped up and the Cubs have the best, most Peavy-est rotation in baseball, then I won't complain (as I watch from my couch).

Yeah, or you could not demand to get the best seats for the best games.

What can I say ... I have caviar taste and a double cheeseburger budget. Besides, banging 10's is nearly impossible unless you spring for the luxo seats and the playoff atmosphere. Telling 'em that you post on NSBB only gets you to second base.

CHICAGO -- Tribune Co. and the Chicago Cubs on Friday announced unprecedented plans to open the season ticket waiting list to the open market. Beginning in January, fans of the Tribune Co.-owned Cubs can buy their way to the top of the list with the purchase of subscriptions to the Chicago Tribune.

"Look: We've got some issues to work out," said Tribune Co. Chairman and CEO Sam Zell. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday amid falling revenues and the nationwide credit crisis. "And it's not just us. Look at the financials at any paper. If we're going to turn this industry around, it's going to take creative solutions, like the one announced here today," Zell added.

Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney said fans already on the ticket waiting list will receive points based on their current place on the list. "Some people have been on this list for decades," Kenney said. "It wouldn't be fair -- or humane, really -- to just wipe that all away and make them start over."

To get more points, and move up on the list, fans must buy subscriptions to the Tribune. Further details about the system, which will be hosted on Cubs.com, will be released next month.

Zell would not comment on how the Cubs' impending sale would affect the new system, but Kenney says the concept is not dependent on newspaper subscriptions. "We can make points equal to anything we want," he said, "be it newspapers or straight-up cash."

Cubs officials say a similar system will be implemented for the sale of individual game tickets. Rather than receive a randomized place in a virtual waiting room when the tickets are made available, online customers can purchase issues of Vine Line, the Cubs' official magazine, to improve their place in the virtual line.

ChicagoBusiness.com[/url]"]For a fee of $249, the Cubs Club Marquee level gives the member a chance to purchase up to 12 tickets in a special Marquee level pre-sale.

For $129, the Cubs Club Ivy Membership levels allow fans to purchase up to four seats in a special Ivy pre-sale.

Do you think there might be a few fans who will sign up for the first crack at tickets for the White Sox and St. Louis games? It sure beats freezing your tail off or paying premium prices for a ticket broker.

The Cubs easily could sell out their entire season with an unlimited Cubs Club membership, but they are going to set limits to ensure tickets still are available to the general public. Matthew Wszolek, Cubs director for sales and promotions, said the cap would be from 4,000 to 5,000 members at the Ivy and Marquee levels.

"We're not talking about just games in April," Mr. Wszolek said. "You can get a Cubs-Sox ticket through Cubs Club. The value on that alone is considerable."

$249 for up to 12 tickets? HAH. Considering what the secondary market is going to be for those tickets, it's a ripoff.

Wow, my Night & Weekend package actually got moved closer this year.

Same section but 5 rows closer. Better than nothing I guess. And hey...I think I'm mere seats away from Fred now!
