The contract sounds reasonable, and I'm sure Dempster turn down a ton of money. Lets just hope we see a pitcher alot closer to the guy we saw last year. Now it's time to get rid of Marquis, which we should actually be able to do this offseason.

If we're going to give 4/52 I think I'd rather see us sign Sheets or Burnett instead.

Speaking of that, here's one unnamed executive who believes that Dempster will sign this deal:

"It wouldn't surprise me if they went to five years with [burnett]," a baseball executive said of the Yankees. "[Ryan] Dempster is going to sign back with the Cubs for four years and $13 million per, and Burnett is worth more than that."

The rumor from this article is that the Yankees are prepared to offer Burnett 5 years, 80 million.

I'm pretty sure I'd rather go 5/80 with Burnett than 4/52 with Dempster.

I dunno. You think Burnett's risk of injury is less than Dempster's risk of suckitude? They're both pretty yucky looking deals.

I'd rather give that money to Lowe, myself.

So you would give a 4/42 to a 36yr old pitcher? I wouldn't.

Gordon's quote in the CST:

The Cubs have reached agreement on a multiyear contract with free agent pitcher Ryan Dempster, and the two-time All-Star is expected to sign the deal today, according to multiple sources.

I think that 13M/yr is pretty good. Would have liked 3 years instead of 4, but that wouldn't have gotten the deal done. IMO Demp left a minimum of 2M/yr on the table to resign with the Cubs. He would have definitely gotten 15M per from someone.

Obviously, I'd like to see Peavy added. But with a full year of Harden (whatever that equates to in actual games started) we now have a better staff than we did last year - even if Demp falls off a little. Peavy makes the rotation legendary. But its pretty good as is.

Trade Marquis, Trade for Peavy, sign Abreu or Ibanez, and sign Kerry Wood to a one-year deal. Done!

I don't know. I hope I'm wrong, but I probably would have let him go and spent that money elsewhere.

same

I also agree, but most of us wouldn't have put Dempster in the rotation last year either. So lets hope Ryan keeps proving us wrong. If Dempster can give us a 3.90s era or so the next four years I will be happy with the contract.

=D>

I can't believe we passed on Woody and signed this fluke.

Predictions for Demp next year?

I'd say 15-11 3.83 ERA 1.31 WHIP

I'd say 14-10, 3.88 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, but 18-5,3.02 ERA, 1.20 WHIP would be great.

It's easy to forget he made the All-Star game with the Marlins way back in the beginning of the decade.

Only two above-average years in his career.

4-6 4.21 ERA 1.41 WHIP - injury in June (due to the fact that last year was his first season over 100 innings since 2003!)

I'm OK with this. I'm not crazy about it though. It's a HUGE risk IMO. Dempster supposedly worked hard to get to where he was last year, is he going to put the same effort again? I just have a feeling this is a total contract year syndrome situation. Lee did the same thing and now he's nowhere near close to what he was that one year(I'm aware of his wrist injury but he should have been fully healthy by now).

Isn't this his first year as a full time starter? I think he's commanding way to much for someone going his first full season and finally had his career year at 31..He's a injury just waiting to happen..He Had his good year on a contract year of course which I hope doesn't come back to bite us like Soriano. I'm still pissed how he showed us talent all season but then when it came down to it in the playoffs , he blew it. If we get Peavy, I'd be more than happy with him as our #4 starter.
