reading between the lines here..it appears the Peavy deal is as good as done IMO. Any package for Peavy will have to include Carlos Marmol and highly sough after relieve ace Kevin Hart. Dempster will now be switched back to the closers role, and a package of Carlos Marmol, Kevin Hart, and Kevin Gregg will be sent to the Padres who willl leverage this trio to replace Trevor Hoffman.

Reading between doing lines? 8-[

A career year @ 32, an 11-year ERA of 4.55 & WHIP of 1.49. I'm very thankful that he was able to lead us to a division title this year, but there's a significant regression from last year in store for Dempster.

Marquis has a 9-year ERA of 4.55 & 1.43 WHIP.

I agree resigning him is a risk, and I think other teams are offering 14-15m per season at 4-5 years. So if he does come back I think he would have to take alot less money. His season could have been a fluke year or Dempster could have turned a corner in his career. The guy always had good stuff, and adding a pitch mixed with his new funky delivery might have had a hand in making him more effective. Personally I feel Dempster won't match last years numbers, but will still be a solid number 3 starter. So If we keep the deal at 12m per season thats probably the going rate for middle of the rotation starters these days. That said I wouldn't be that upset if he leaves, and a part of me almost hopes he does.

According to John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus, Ryan Dempster turned down the Cubs 4 year, $52 million offer. This isn’t really news since we all knew there was little chance he’d sign for that kind of money after having the kind of season he did in 2008.

If thats true then I don't think Dempster will be back. But I'll wait to hear it from a better source first. Since Levine and others are still saying the Cubs are waiting to hear back from Dempster on this offer.

Perrotto predicted that the Cubs would sign Adam Dunn.

Zero credibility.

Because he predicted something that hasn't even happened/not happened yet? Anyways, I think that was kind of a "for fun" thing and not really his realistic expectations.

If that's true I don't really think Dempster wants to be a Cub very badly. He's always talked about how much he loved playing here and seemed so eager to get a deal done. This is $12MM more than Ted Lilly got and he's had a longer track record than Dempster. I'm very surprised he didn't sign this deal (if true).

4 years and $52MM for the team that picked you off the scrap heap and rehabed you?

How much money do people need?

I'm not taking sides on whether he should sign or not, but I always get a kick out of posters who say a player ought to leave millions of dollars on the table to play for a certain team. After you retire from baseball at 37 or 38 years old, that extra few million dollars might help your "golden years".

I have no question that Dempster would love to play for the Cubs. I wish people wouldn't automatically start throwing around the "he doesn't want to be here" line just because a player is trying to get the best contract possible.

I've never been a big fan of giving a career underachiever a big contract based on a great contract year. More often than not you end up regretting it.

Carl Pavano and Gary Matthews Jr. think you're full of crap :)

If we're going to give 4/52 I think I'd rather see us sign Sheets or Burnett instead.

Speaking of that, here's one unnamed executive who believes that Dempster will sign this deal:

"It wouldn't surprise me if they went to five years with [burnett]," a baseball executive said of the Yankees. "[Ryan] Dempster is going to sign back with the Cubs for four years and $13 million per, and Burnett is worth more than that."

The rumor from this article is that the Yankees are prepared to offer Burnett 5 years, 80 million.

All this report means is Dempster could decide who he's going to sign with soon. When Levine said Dempster was going to sign in the next 48 hours, that doesn't mean he's a lock to sign with us. He's just going to resign with somebody, and I'm sure has bigger offers on the table.

He can only resign with the Cubs.

I don't envy Hendry on this decision. It's pretty much inevitable that Dempster won't come close to repeating last year and will fail to live up to a new contract. However, the Cubs don't have many options in the rotation. Hopefully Dempster will be able to throw 200 innings every year and perform at an above average level. He should be able to be better than Marquis has been and there is value in getting decent pitching over many innings.

Sadly, there aren't many other places for Hendry to spend this money.

Of course, most of that is a result of his gross incompetence.

16 million a year. Wow!

I'm pretty sure I'd rather go 5/80 with Burnett than 4/52 with Dempster.

I dunno. You think Burnett's risk of injury is less than Dempster's risk of suckitude? They're both pretty yucky looking deals.

I think the expected level of value for Burnett is significantly higher than for Dempster. If Burnett is on the mound, he's going to be good. Dempster has a high risk of sucking and a reasonable risk of injury (as does any pitcher).

Why are people skeptical over Dempster possible not being as good next yr as he was this yr? I mean after looking it up, Dempster's 2008 is not that far off from Chris Carpenter 2005 numbers. Yes I went there. Like Carpenter I believe Demspter is a late bloomer as a starter and that the next four yrs will be his best four of his career regardless of where he signs.

What's more likely? That Dempster is a late bloomer (of which there are precious few examples) or that this year was a fluke (of which there are many, many examples). You might be right, but it's a high risk/high reward situation.

Agreed, but I think Burnetts risk of injury is higher than most, given his history. Which is better? A sucky pitcher on the mound or a good pitcher on the DL?

The Cubs, moving to address one of their off-season priorities, are close to re-signing free-agent right-hander Ryan Dempster to a four- year contract, according to major-league sources.

The return of Dempster would not necessarily make the Cubs less likely to trade for Padres right-hander Jake Peavy, sign free-agent lefty Randy Johnson or pursue any other player.

Their next steps likely would depend upon the wishes of the team's new ownership group, which is expected to be selected before Christmas, sources said.
