Keeping up the anime discussion would be a good way to get this thread locked.

What if we fused the topics? For instance, what if I asked the questions "Does Jake Peavy like anime? If so, what are his favorite kinds? Are there any good anime hangouts in Chicago that would entice him to come here?" and so forth?

anime hangouts?

Yeah, I don't know much about anime culture. I didn't know if there were places were slobbery, pimple-ridden anime nerds congregated to discuss their favorite shows and characters and such.

D'oh, I'm thinking of conventions. Anime conventions

But if there are, and Jake Peavy is into anime and likes cosplaying as Inuasha, at conventions, he's coming here!!

I still think the Cubs end up with Peavy. If not by spring training, then at the trade deadline. I would much rather have him for a full season rather than a couple of months in 2009. I just hope that somehow the Cubs can find the money in the budget and Ricketts gives the go ahead. I think the Cubs need Peavy more than a lot of people on this board. I don't trust that Harden stays healthy all year. He is hurt right now. Z has been showing signs of arm problems the past 2 seasons. That leaves you with Lilly, Demp, Marshall, Shark, Gaudan. Oh, and Heilman. I guess the Wood/Prior debacle in 04 and 05 is still just too fresh in my mind.

I think anyone who isn't creeped out by it hasn't seen enough of it.

Japan in general creeps me out.

I have seen more than enough.

And if being creeped out by an entire country isn't a sign of some sort of psychological issue/neurosis, I don't know what is.

Yeah, my bad. The used panty vending machines and tentacle rape cartoon porn are perfectly normal.

Oh, I see. Since those are in/from Japan, they are representative of the country in general.

Thanks for setting me straight.

Anyway, this is my last non-Peavy related post in this thread.

I don't think anyone on this board really needs Peavy - and I doubt many could come up with his salarly . . . ;)

Plus, what would he do for me? Can he type at least 80 wpm? Can he cook?

I doubt Towers answers any questions concerning Peavy.

He just did......

Corey, Oceanside, CA: Hello Kevin, has the change in ownership decreased the urgency to deal Peavy? Will you shed some light of Jeff Moorads feelings on a possible Peavy deal? And looking back, will you explain your "train has left the station" comments regarding a possible Peavy deal.

SportsNation Kevin Towers: (1:59 PM ET ) It was a mistake on my part, to say that, as I was rushed with media types leaving the meeting. I made a statement I probably should not have made. I have a great relationship with Jake, still do, and as of right now it looks like will start the season with us.; We went into the meetings probing to see if there was a deal that made sense for Jake, knowing we would ask a ton for him and if someone was willing to step we may have dealt him, but no deal presented to us we felt was good about. I have not had any talks with Jeff Moorad, but knowing Jeff and the premium hew put on piutching in Arizona, without putting words in his mouth, I would imagine he would want top keep Jake, but that is without having had any discussions over the matter with him.

More

Andrew (Chicago, IL): What is the hardest thing about negotiating the move of an established player for young, unproven, but potentially high-touted prospects?

SportsNation Kevin Towers: (2:02 PM ET ) A lot of it depends on your finances. It is hard to move an elite pitcher, and if you can keep a pitcher, you do it. In Jake's situation, we felt it was important to probe clubs. Any time you move a great player, and you are moving him to a contender, you are more than likely not going to get proven players back. So from a fan perspective, no deal will appear a good deal. That is where you must trust you scouting staff and make sure that you have evaluated the young guys properly and have had several looks at the players. You may not hit on all the young players youger, but if you hit on two, that can have a major impact. But that is one of the most difficult moves a GM has to make.

Paul (Charleston, IL): Kevin, what are your thoughts on a salary cap for baseball? Also, could you please not trade Jake Peavy to the Cubs. Thanks.

SportsNation Kevin Towers: (2:05 PM ET ) First of all Charleston was one of my favorite places to play in the minor leagues. I do not think there will ever be a cap. Certainly revenue sharing and the luxury tax has helped but I think the Player Association is too strong. And I do not want to move Jake either, so I hope he has continues to have a long and successful career here.

Obviously nothing earth shattering

Yeah i mean even if there was a trade or wanted to trade peavy, he wouldn't have said that in the chat. The only interesting tid bit was about the train leaving the station comment. Can someone clarify that comment for me, was it made in the context of saying a deal with the cubs was dead?

It was made early in the offseason, in the context of whether Jake Peavy would remain a Padre, i.e. when he said it, it sure as shooting sounded like "the Jake Peavy train has left the station, the only question is where he'll arrive."

Now that the negotiations have fizzled, died, spasmed and died again, he has to backtrack, obviously, but it seemed quite clear at the time.

I wasn't sure where to post this so I'll put it in here. Churchill mentione din an e-mail to me that the (potential) new owners were bring "really unreasonable". I asked him for details and he said this-

They aren't really willing to even discuss the payroll. So it's a "no, you can't add a big-salary player," but only as the default, because they won't talk about it. So the front office is forced to just find a way to respond to the press about things and Mike got back from Mexico expecting to go to Mesa with a full slate of assignments.

Instead, he was told he had to fire two of his part-timers, or one of his full timers. And that he's not going to Arizona until the games start because he has to handle the WBC duties that the part timers would have covered early in the tournament.

Makes me believe that the new ownership may not be willing to extend themselves as big spenders, but it's too early to come to that conclusion.

Who knows if this is at all true, but it definitely makes you worry. Also it would explain trading Olson

I'm trying really hard to make sense of this and figure out who Mike is, and I'm coming up with nothing.

Churchill's contact in the Cubs organization is named Mike. I think people have speculated before that it is Mike Valarezo, but it could be any of a half a dozen people in the organization.

I'm not gonna panic until I have to. I think it would be weird for a lifetime Cubs fan to buy the Cubs and then slash payroll and screw the franchise over.

I don't think it would be about that. From the articles that came out a couple weeks ago on those business websites, it sounds like he just can't afford it

Then why spend 3/4 of your family net worth on a baseball team?
