LAS VEGAS -- Padres star pitcher Jake Peavy is "frustrated'' by the team's inability to trade him after threatening to do so for months and "shaken'' over the Padres' latest failure to deal him to the Cubs after weeks of talks, Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod said.

"We tried to cooperate as best we could,'' Axelrod told SI.com in a phone interview. "Frankly, Jake is frustrated now more than ever. And I'm more frustrated than ever.''

Trade talks between the Padres and Cubs broke down with Cubs people complaining about the way San Diego was doing business. But if the Cubs are annoyed (and they are, as several Cubs officials expressed annoyance over the Padres continuing push for more players and the media leaks coming from somewhere that were revelatory about which Cubs were being included in potential deals), Peavy is almost as annoyed.

Axelrod provided Padres GM Kevin Towers, a close personal friend of Axelrod's, with a list of five teams Peavy would consider; Peavy has a blanket no-trade clause meaning he'd have to approve any trade. The Cubs were thought to be at or near the top of Peavy's five-team preferred list. So were the Braves, and talks with them broke down weeks ago.

Axelrod gave Towers guidance with the list of five that also included the Dodgers, Cardinala dn Astros. But he is under no obligation to provide pre-approved lists.

"If they come to us with a trade now, we'll consider it. But there won't be any more lists,'' Axelrod said. "No, we're done with that.''

After weeks of waiting, Axelrod indicated that Peavy was becoming adjusted to the idea of moving to Chicago to become a Cub, only to have that possibility pulled out from under him in the latest Padre failure.

"It's tough. Jake was pretty shaken by it,'' Axelrod said. "He was starting to think about what life was like to be a Chicago Cub, and now that was taken from him.''

All in all, Axelrod was by amazed by the utter waste of the Winter Meetings, where only the Yankees, Mets, Mariners and Indians accomplished anything of note.

"It's amazing to me how many people can waste time, money and resources, and get nothing done," Axelrod said. "Baseball moved lock, stock and barrel into that town, and absolutely nothing happened."

WOW. That tells me Jake really wants to be a Cub. He could force Towers hand here. I like it.

Apparently Axelrod has never seen the Chicago City Council in action.

That's the most awesome thing I've read since this deal died. It's reassuring to know that Peavy really wanted to be here, and it gives a shred of hope that he'll make his voice heard and force Towers to do something.

I love Jake Peavy.

I hope we can salvage this. You have to like a guy who wants to be here that bad.

In the long run, that just may get him here.

When you have a guy making that much, who has essentially made it clear that hes miserable on the team, you really need to get a deal of some kind done. I really dont see him on the Badres come spring training.

Even if the Padres were able to open it up to all teams, they'd have to be pretty happy about a haul of a top 50 prospect, 3 left-handers between the ages of 24-27 that are major league ready and are all decent to good prospects, an unknown prospect (this is the 2nd one from the Phillies), a lower end starting shortstop/good backup, and a reliever with upside but will likely be worthless due to injury issues. The Padres request was for young major league ready pitching. This deal had it in spades, and if they had wanted they could have probably gotten a 4th good young pitcher instead of Vitters.

It is debatable if a 6 for 1 deal or a 7 for 1 deal is the right thing for Peavy. What is definitely clear though is that the Cubs were not going to get any sort of discount for the fact that the Padres had nobody else to trade him to. They were having to pay full value on Peavy, and they were only willing to get him if they actually got the benefit of Peavy falling into their laps.

Apparently the Angels will only go after Peavy if they can't resign Tex, so we gotta hope that they can resign him. If they can resign him that pretty much leaves Towers dead in the water. Also if the Tex thing drags out for a week or so it can allow Hendry to get back in to things while the Angels wait on Tex and can't exhaust their full resources with Peavy.

In my opinion, Vitters, Marshall, Pie, Cedeno/Theriot, and maybe a lower level prospect or 2 plus getting Peavys contract off the books, which was the main objective should have been more than enough to get the deal done. Now there stuck with an angry ace with a big contract.

I don't get the Hendry criticism, and I'm not buying that this deal is dead. Kevin Towers' declaration that a deal would have to get done by Thursday is what died today.

I'm going to give Hendry credit for realizing that Towers was overplaying his hand. With Peavy pushing hard on his GM to make the trade, Towers is in an even worse negotiating position.

I'm no GM-wannabe, but a gut feeling tells me that Peavy as a Cub is still very possible. If nothing else, Hendry's free to work on the Marquis to NY deal, which could potentially open up the Peavy situation even more.

This kind of proves Hendry's point about giving up too much and the growing demand for more players at the Padres request. Hendry was right to pass for now. Towers is going to have to do a lot of work to rebuild his relationship with Peavy or lower his demands and give him what he wants.

Would Peavy even accept a trade to the Angels, if LAA offered an acceptable package to the Padres? Or would Peavy used his NTC to block a trade to LAA?

I agree with this.

In all likelihood Peavy's not going anywhere else, nor is the Padres' situation likely to improve to the point where keeping Peavy becomes any more realistic than it is now.

So Hendry sits back and waits, and if the phone rings, great. In the meantime some other agenda items can get his undivided attention (Marquis, RF). When those are resolved, everything else on the offseason to-do list is complete, and getting Peavy would be pure gravy, then re-engaging with Towers might be something worth exploring.

I think that's debatable, and Towers would probably have to go a long way convincing him that no other NL teams were a possibility, as it has been his desire to stay in the NL. The fact that the Angels are so close to SD might make it more of a possibility that he accepts a trade there, but I still think he prefers a Cubs/NL team over any AL team, even if they are only a hour or two away from SD.

I doubt anyone can answer this. Maybe we'll all find out before long.

The Angels are quietly working behind the scenes on this front.

I get the impression that hes just unhappy with San Diego. He really wanted to be a Cub, but if thats not an option, he'll start at least entertaining other teams. I think he just doesnt like the direction the Padres are headed, and wants to be with a winner.

I think they are too but until the Tex thing is resolved they really can't get into too serious of negotiations because Tex is a much more important player to their team next year than Peavy is. They already have a good rotation and might be getting Escobar back, and even though he was bad last year Adenhart is still young/had good minor numbers.
