There is speculation amongst executives that the Cubs are dumping payroll to make a run at Bobby Abreu. Moving DeRosa and Marquis would definitely do the trick, even with Peavy on the roster.

This site has been iffy in the past, but the dude claims he's at the hotel.

He also says that they've been informed a press conference is scheduled at 12 (their time), but that eh doesn't think it's going to be anything significant.

Oh really. I've got 12:23 on my clock.

oh crap, they're running late, something must be imminent!

2:25pm: The saga continues...Kevin Towers does not think this deal lost steam in the last 24 hours, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown and Gordon Edes. However, they say the Cubs are having second thoughts about this four-team mess. The Cubs source says the price is too steep for them right now and they're looking at another short-term option for the rotation (Randy Johnson maybe).

NOW I'm WORRIED

LAS VEGAS – Although the Chicago Cubs are having second thoughts about the complicated four-team deal that would send San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy to the Chicago Cubs, Padres general manager Kevin Towers remains optimistic Tuesday.

“Although this deal could be very complicated, I wouldn’t say that it’s lost steam in the last 24 hours,” Towers said in an email to Yahoo! Sports.

However, a Cubs source directly involved in the trade talks said a deal is not close, that the price is “too steep” right now and the Cubs are looking at another “short-term option” to fill out their already formidable starting rotation.

Towers has been relentless in his efforts to deal Peavy, and Monday he made clear that the Cubs were the only serious suitor left for the right-hander, who asked to be traded shortly after the season to one of a short list of National League teams. Towers has worked hard to comply, but first the Braves and now the Cubs can’t seem to work out the puzzle.

The Phillies and Orioles are the other teams in the four-way proposal. It is unclear precisely who the players are that would be sent packing, but the deal would begin with the Cubs sending outfielder Felix Pie and infielder Mark De Rosa to the Phillies. Pie would go to the Orioles, who would send Garrett Olson, Sean Marshall and J.A. Happ to the Padres.

Surplus Cubs starter Jason Marquis and his hefty $9.875 million salary would have to go somewhere to make the deal happen, and maybe that’s where the snag has come.

An alternative for the Cubs to add a fifth starter to a rotation that already boasts Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, Rich Harden and Ryan Dempster would be aging flamethrower Randy Johnson, who is seeking a one-year deal with a contender.

This has got to be th most insane trade related roller coaster ever. I cant remember this kind of on again off again howry, in real time no less. Even the Roberts fiasco wasnt this ridiculous. I demand closure one way or another.

I think our highly suspect offense will take a hit without Derosa.......so I personally don't care either way if we land Peavy. Obviously it would be nice, but we need our bats moreso with our current rotation.

ha beat you to it, but anyways, am i the only one that doesn't want Randy Johnson on this team? I'm a little worried cause i'm getting the same feeling with this trade that i got with the roberts trade where the orioles began asking for too much in the trade. Sounds like Hendry might be holding back because Towers may be asking for too much for Peavy. I really dont blame Hendry to be honest, to give up six players for just peavy and one of those players is Derosa who could've been an all star last year and might of been your team MVP, dont know just my opinion but we might be giving up too much. Dont mind switchin Theriot for Derosa.

I wonder if we could send Z to the Phillies and have them send prospects to the orioles who then send Brian Roberts to the Cubs as part of the Peavy 4way trade that is apparently in the works.....though obviously we'd keep Derosa in that situation.

..though that situation will also obviously not happen.

Getting Johnson after all of this would be like expecting a PS 3 for christmas and getting tube socks.

At this point, I'm beginning to say "screw it" to this trade. Our front office knew this was Jake Peavy we were trying to get...he's not going to be cheap. So when we're an "ok" from getting him, they aren't sure anymore?

Let's just sign Bradley and call it an off-season. :(

The GMs all have been in meetings this morning talking about procedurual stuff. Nothing is imminent with any trade. There is no press conference. The Cubs are not in a payroll dump to get Abreu. I still think Bradley is the more doable candidate. Randy Johnson is in play, but not on the front burner. The DeRosa talk has not originated with the Cubs.

Exactly i share those same feelings, i would be salty if we received Johnson instead. Quick Request, i'm at work but could somebody watch the Hot Stove Special On ESPN at 4pm Central to see if they mention Peavy? Then give us a recap if possible, doubt i will make it home on time.

Another thing to wonder is if Peavy was really singing " Go Cubs Go" and is so pumped to be a Cub what do you think he will if Towers keep putting the price up and then ultimately discourages Hendry from pulling the trade. Is it just me or does anyone think that Peavy will be unsatisfied with staying with the padres after all this and pressure Towers to send him to the Cubs or someone else. I have to imagine that this on again off again treatment is pissing Peavy off.

Who knows how much we are giving up? You can't say we made a bad choice unless you know who we are giving up. The proposal may very well be too much for us, and even Towers said late last night that while they had some teams agree, that there wiould still have to be haggling going on between the Padres and Cubs to find the right fit.

You're the best, Bruce! Thanks so much as always.

Trading Z would be the dumbest thing ever
There isn't anyone who would be dumb to trade. Trading for less value than a guy is worth is dumb, not just trading him in the first place.

So what type of deadline do you think were looking for for some kind of closure on this thing? Is the Thursday deadline still in play before Towers ends the talks?

it's only a roller coaster because you're following it minute by minute for some insane reason. if you just, like, checked it at the end of the day or something your life would probably be less stressful.

I wouldn't trade Z to bring in prospect for Roberts or Peavy, i wouldn't trade Z unless it was for a stud young player. I would be happy with some three way trade if we traded Z and got someone like Hanley Ramirez in return or maybe even trading Z and a prospect to the Giants for Lincecom. I would be highly disappointed if the cubs traded Z for someone like Roberts. Z is still a young star so you should get a young star in return.

Trading Soto would be dumb.

Trading Z would be dumb.

Any trade that would weaken your ball club would be dumb. Value is only part of the equation.

We knew Peavy wouldn't be cheap. But there has to be a limit to what you pay. You can't fault Hendry for things like Soriano's contract and then get mad that he doesn't immediately fold when presented with a Peavy offer.

If the cost is DeRosa, Vitters, Pie, Marshall, and others you really have to think carefully before you pull the trigger. Especially if we're eating a bunch of cash just to make Jason Marquis go away. Realize that we should be the ones negotiating from a position of strength. We don't HAVE to get Jake Peavy to have a very good rotation next year. The Padres almost HAVE to trade Jake Peavy or risk a nightmare next season dealing with him once the Padres are out of it a month into the season. It's not like the Cubs are going to pass and the Yankees are going to turn over their farm system. The constant here is that Jake Peavy is the man in control and he appears to have no inclination to dramatically open up the market. It appears the Padres are going to be stuck dealing with a team at a time.

We shouldn't just agree to the first thing we're offered. There's no shortage of top level pitchers right now.

Towers is basically daring Hendry to fold and he doesn't even have a pair. No reason to give in so quickly.

As long as Towers is still optimistic that a deal can be worked out, then I'm as well. I think this deal is gonna take a little while to get done(maybe to tomorrow night or Thursday, if at all), so waiting for every update is just gonna drive everybody nuts. We all need to relax and just wait and see what happens.
