A friend of mine was in a group in a Las Vegas bar on Sunday night that included Jake Peavy (in the picture above with his wife Katie), and the word is Peavy is fired up to join the Cubs.

He's so excited, I hear, that at one point he sang "Go Cubs Go" at the bar after a "Brooks and Dunn" concert he attended with Roy Oswalt.

Peavy is psyched about the possibility of joining Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster in a strong rotation. He said, according to my friend, if he doesn't end up with the Cubs, he expects to land with the New York Yankees.

From what I hear, Peavy said he talked to Jim Hendry this weekend and the word is what has been reported, that the Cubs are looking to trade Jason Marquis, but that the Cubs may have to eat as much as $6 million of Marquis' contract.

Also, according to my source, Peavy said the Cubs may be trying to trade Mark DeRosa with an eye on Rich Aurilia to play second base.

It apparently is all up to Hendry. After that disaster in the playoffs, my guess is Hendry will do all he could to recharge the fan base.

Hendry said the Trib's bankruptcy filing won't affect the Cubs, so my guess is Peavy and Cubs will be singing "Go Cubs Go" next year -- at least during the regular season.

LOL, I love how his "sources" are just common knowledge and the Rosenthal mention of Aurelia that was quickly shot down.

Who is going to platoon with Fontenot? (Career vs. LHP = .247 .313 .370)

We all didn't want Aurelia, but after looking at his splits, why not?

Over a .900 OPS against lefties last year. It makes more sense than I originally thought...

Last 3 years vs. lefties:

.305/.354/.545 for an .899 OPS

Seems like it could be pretty damn productive.

Who is going to platoon with Fontenot? (Career vs. LHP = .247 .313 .370) I guess Fukudome can play RF when Bradley goes down. I thought Hendry was obsessed with versatility, its surprising that he's willing to give up DeRosa, but I'm all for selling high.

Someone in the Mark Loretta, Ray Durham, Alex Cintron category, I would assume.

I've said it a couple places now, but Clint Barmes is my guy for that spot. Good defender that has always hit LHP, in an overcrowded infield situation in Colorado with Atkins, Baker, Stewart, and Tulowitzki all competing for 3 spots.

I'd like Barmes. He can play all the positions Derosa can as well. He has seen time in RF and CF in his career, and both as recently as the last 2 years. I don't imagine him in CF would be a good idea, but no reason he can't play some corner OF in case of injury or days off.

Barmes sure has an ugly OBP, but with what Perry has done over the last two years, there may be some hope for him. I just worry that if we give up both Marquis and Marshall, who will be the spot starter when injuries occur. They will happen and I don't know if Angel Guzman can do it or anyone else in the system. Gaudin might be the next best option, but we don't even know if we're keeping him.

The Jake Peavy-Cubs trade talks have reached a point where it will be a stunner if the Cubs don’t acquire Peavy, who immediately would become the best pitcher on a staff that already boasts Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly and Rich Harden.

That’s because two general managers -– the Padres’ Kevin Towers and the Cubs’ Jim Hendry -- are working hard to make it happen. If it doesn’t happen, it’ll become one of the few trades -– maybe the first -- that couldn’t be made when BOTH general managers were motivated to get it done.

Towers told reporters on Monday that the Cubs were the only team he is continuing to talk to about Peavy and that making a Peavy trade was his full focus at the winter meetings. He then went out and proved it by working to facilitate a potentially four-team trade that would send Mark DeRosa to Philadelphia and Felix Pie to Baltimore and bring back pitchers Garrett Olson, J.A. Happ (the Northwestern product) and Sean Marshall for the Padres.

The key for that deal to work is for the Phillies or Orioles to take Jason Marquis, with the Cubs agreeing to eat some of his salary.

Would this be a good deal for the Cubs?

Getting Peavy unquestionably makes it a good deal, even though DeRosa could be missed. His departure would make the left-handed-hitting Mike Fontenot the second baseman, partially fulfilling Lou Piniella’s wish to become more balanced. The addition of a left-handed-hitting right fielder –- some reports now say Milton Bradley is at the top of their list –- would make Piniella very happy.

Peavy has turned in sub-3 earned run averages in four of the last five seasons, including a 2.85 mark last year. He’s been helped by Petco Park, sure, but overall he’s allowed only 315 hits in 397 innings the last two years. That figure doesn’t have much to do with Petco’s large dimensions.

DeRosa, Pie, Marquis, and Marshall? Done, done, and done (and I wound't mind Dunn either).

I'd be stunned if Vitters isn't included - he could easily not be mentioned in that blog and still be part of the deal since he's a minor leaguer.

I agree I'm sure Vitters is included, but just playing Devil's Advocate maybe things changed after revealing that hand/wrist injury that he has, hence why the Phillies emerged and DeRosa's name is now being thrown around.

He said, according to my friend, if he doesn't end up with the Cubs, he expects to land with the New York Yankees.

Of all the tidbits mentioned in that Sun Times article, this is the biggest news. All we've heard is that Jake will not revise his list of teams, and that the only team that he can be traded to is the Cubs, and now he says that he expects to land with NY if he doesn't go to the Cubs. Hopefully the Yankees don't hear about this, as they can offer the Padres a much better deal than the Cubs can, and they are much more desperate to find an ace starter, so they would probably overpay for him if CC goes elsewhere.

Not that they don't have the resources, but don't you think the Yankees, who have a ton of money available, would rather just give up money for a CC/Burnett instead of a bunch of players for Peavy? Just a thought.

Cashman is not keen on giving up his minor league prizes. He'd much rather sign free agents.

True but by signing Type A FAs, he is losing draft picks he would have had. Either way hes mortgaging the future to get better now.

I wonder if Olson and Happ remove Marshall from the discussion entirely. Hendry has said he didn't want to trade Fontenot or Marshall.

Olson, Happ and Marshall are all lefties. Add in Wade LeBlanc, and that's a lot of lefties potentially in the Padres rotation. Maybe Hart replaces Marshall. Of course, Wuertz and Guzman have been mentioned as well. Maybe Marquis replaces Marshall, which might be where the "Cubs might have to eat 5 or 6m" rumor comes from. By moving DeRosa and picking up that much of Marquis' contract, it would put them in about the same spot financially.

I'm just thinking that CC doesn't want to come to NY and would rather go to LA or stay in Milwaukee (although the latest Yankees/CC meetings have seemed encouraging for NY), and I don't think the Yankees or anyone else view Burnett in the same level as Peavy/Sabathia.

You know what, looking at Loretta's numbers, he may actually be a legitimate option. He hasn't declined much over the years and he can play any position in the infield.

looks like he is a dodger now anyway.

It's a blog from some guy I never heard of (though he works for the Sun Times apparently), so I wouldn't get worked up over what he says.

Just out of curiousity, how much does Orlando Hudson figure to sign for? I keep forgetting he's even a FA.

I think he wants upwards of 8 figures.

Don't we all...

Well, I'd imagine it's a situation where Jake Peavy doesn't want to pitch for the frickin' Padres next year. Right now he's said "only Cubs" because we're his first choice. In candor if you ask him "what if Hendry says he can't?" he might say that next up would be the Yankees. But so far, the only person whose opinion matters hasn't given permission to go there. So I wouldn't get worked up about it.

The Padres need to move Peavy. The Phillies want our second basemen and will give us pitchers. The Padres want pitchers. If needed the Orioles want Pie and will gives us more pitchers. And so on.

It all seems academic right now. We're just haggling over prospects. Nothing like the Roberts situation where a crazy owner was coupled with the most timid GM imaginable. Everyone is motivated and not wasting the others time.

I'm only aboard with Aurillia or Grudz if they come cheap and for one year. If not, just wait it out, even until the end of the offseason, and see if you can't find this year's Johnson/Edmonds on the waiver wire to fill that spot. When you possibly have the favorable starting pitching matchup of every single game, you have the leeway to wait it out on the 2nd base platoon role.

We'd pretty much have to keep him if both Marquis and Marshall leave.
