You've gotta be kidding me.

Pie to Balt makes no sense whatsoever

Just remember that Andy MacPhail has irrational love for former Cubs and Cubs prospects, and it makes perfect sense.

And Stockstill is in the Baltimore organization too. These are the guys that signed or drafted some of the Cubs prospects they are interested in, they clearly have a bias for them.

I just find it hard to believe that Kevin Towers would prefer Olson to Pie... we know that Towers has tried to get Pie from Hendry multiple times in the past. We know that SD needs a CF with huge range very badly. Something tells me that if he's willing to let Pie head to Baltimore, they're sending more than Olson back in exchange.

Are we still taking info from Bigbird after the fiasco last offseason?

Not seriously, but what else is going on anyway?

http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2008/dec/06/sullivan-padres-greenes-victim-lofty-ambitions/?padres

All of these analyses may have been accurate. Certainly, the Padres' grievance procedure over Greene's season-ending tantrum had some bearing on the club's decision to make a deal. Yet the key factor underpinning Thursday's trade was undoubtedly finances.

Unable to count on owner John Moores to provide a cash infusion during his divorce, Padres management has had little choice but to prune its player payroll to conform with its revenue projections. Current calculations indicate a cut close to the $40 million mark, which falls somewhere between an austerity budget and the Florida Marlins.

Shedding Greene's $6.5 million salary still leaves the Padres roughly $5 million short of that goal, so it does not mean the Padres can afford to keep pitching ace Jake Peavy. Still, it should reduce their desperation to make a deal.

There's still a gun at management's head, to be sure, but at least it's no longer cocked. General Manager Kevin Towers says the Chicago Cubs now have the talent available to swing a Peavy deal (through the involvement of third parties), but that the Padres now have enough flexibility to say no.

“It doesn't look as though Peavy is a definite goner,” Black said. “I would think KT will continue to fish a little bit.” Given the Padres' bleak short-term prospects, and the $63 million remaining on Peavy's contract, a preseason trade remains the likeliest outcome.

Conceivably, Towers said, trading Peavy could give the Padres the financial flexibility to revisit negotiations with estranged reliever Trevor Hoffman. On the other hand (to borrow Sandy Alderson's pet phrase), what good is a closer if you're always behind?

The Padres' predicament is so painfully plain that the front office is making no effort to justify its salary dumps as anything else. Towers was pleased that the pitchers the Cardinals exchanged for Greene made the deal more palatable than another proposal he was considering (presumably from the Baltimore Orioles), but he doesn't pretend that he found fair value.

Towers has learned to make the best of a bad situation. Khalil Greene could benefit by taking note.

Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune discusses the Padres. Kevin Towers will keep the Jake Peavy talks going with the Cubs while also searching for a shortstop and veteran catcher.

Has Theriot even been mentioned in the trade talks? I know on this board he has quite a bit, if Hendry did offer him up, he would fit in well with the Padres in a field like PetCo. Obviously it wont get the deal done alone, but he should be a lot more attractive than Cedeno.

Two Cubs sources told the Sun-Times that the Cubs still are interested in Jake Peavy, with one saying he expects a deal to get done.

There's been talk that the Cubs don't have the ability to do the deal with ownership still up in the air, but it looks like they could boast a $140 million payroll anyway, giving them the flexibility they'd need. Such a plan would likely involve trading Jason Marquis, even if a portion of his $9.875 million salary had to be eaten.

I wish Hendry would trade Marquis and the whole Triple A team to Texas for Josh Hamilton

We wouldn't have had to if Hendry didn't trade him to the Reds for virtually nothing!!!!!!

Peavy To Cubs On Life Support?

By Nat Boyle [December 7 at 12:54pm CST]

A brief update on the Jake Peavy situation from the indefatigable Jon Heyman:

"'The Peavy thing isn't dead, but it's on life support," one person familiar with the Cubs' dealings said.'"

Heyman also notes that the Cubs are looking at left handed hitters such as Bobby Abreu, Adam Dunn, and Raul Ibanez among others. Jake Peavy and a left handed hitting outfielder are high priorities for the Cubs going into the Winter Meetings.

Meh that's a bunch of BS IMO. Towers said yesterday that he planned on meeting with Hendry today and said that they would talk to the othe teams in the 3 way, so I doubt that's already been done and completed by 1:10.

Here's what I was talking about from yesterday:

“I've had ongoing dialogues with Jim Hendry,” Towers said. “We plan to get together once we get to Las Vegas. We've identified a couple of teams that may be a third party that maybe could help out.”

I doubt anything has changed already.

This same thing has been going on since day one. one day its on, next day its off. Im sure tommorow, it will almost be a done deal, and then Tuesday, all talks will be off, and Wednesday, the discussions will still be going on.

I would be thrilled if he can just get those two moves done of Peavy and a LF middle bat ( Abreu,Ibanez ) Then get rid of Marquis and whatever other small moves he has to do

Doubt that carries water having been reported so early on day one of the meetings. Still, interesting to hear Dunn's name brought up directly but likely just speculation ... like everything else.
