The Giants might win that division next year...if they can add one big time free agent as they have been rumored to be after.

SD will be a mess. Colorado will probably go backwards minus Holliday. The Dodgers were sub .500 before they got Manny and they might lose him, Furcal, and Lowe. I huess Arizona will be favored, but they aren't that impressive.

The Giants still have to improve their offense alot before they would have a chance at winning the division. Renteria would help, but he's not nearly enough. Remember this team has a middle of the order of Randy Winn, Bengie Molina and Aaron Rowand. If they can add a big bat with Renteria and another SP then it might be possible.

Like if they had Derrek Lee?

Everyone needs to keep in mind that it's still early. The Winter Meetings haven't even started yet.

Since when has there ever been any patience on this board?

KHALIL GREENE ON THE BRINK OF BEING MOVED

In a continuing attempt to reduce payroll, the Padres were closing in on trading their starting shortstop, Khalil Greene, who is due to make $6.5 million next year in the final season of his contract.

The expectation is that Greene will be moved even before the Winter Meetings start in Las Vegas on Monday. The sources who revealed that the 29-year-old will be dealt did not divulge to which team. But the Orioles and Cardinals are among a small group of clubs that is working hard to find a shortstop.

I wonder if Greene/Pie for Olson works?

It would be nice to get Peavy wrapped up before the meetings so we can find another bat and maybe a bullpen arm.

The dudes on OH are pretty much assuming he's going to the Orioles, but I don't think so. If he were going to the O's you'd think the Pads would wait to see if he could be part of the Peavy 3-way trade.

I don't see Derrek Lee agreeing to go to the Giants. Plus who plays 1b for us? I never really saw trading Lee as a realistic option, just a possiblity if it made alot of sense. But Hendry isn't gonna go with DeRosa or Hoffpauir at 1b next year.

I think we would have a better chance at him accepting a deal to a contender like the Angels or Dodgers. If the Giants decide to go into win now mode and starting spending like there's been rumors of this offseason (Sabathia, Ramirez) maybe Lee would accept a deal. If trading Lee and Marquis can get us the prospects to land Peavy , the money saved in moving Lee could be spent on one of the more expensive LH bats for the outfield in Bradley/Dunn. Giambi has made a ton of money over his career and doesn't have a ring yet, he used to be a very solid defender and would give the Cubs another left handed slugger that gets on base.

Found this on OH, this report expects Khalil Greene to be traded by monday possibly to either the Cardinals or Orioles. Just thinking out loud here but maybe the hang up in the trade could have been the Padres needed to find a taker for Greene knowing that the Cubs didn't want him, and Theriot/Cedeno are going to SD in a deal. Maybe SD didn't want Greene and one of Theriot/Cedeno on the roster at the same time, likely devaluing both in a trade due to the fact that teams would know that SD needed/wanted to trade one before the season. Or possibly this could be a start of the 3-way with Baltimore or another team sending pitching to SD and a Cubs player or two along with Green to the 3rd team.

I don't see Hendry trading Lee unless he gets a pretty good return, so I don't see him dumping Lee salary for Peavy. Plus I don't see him trading Lee unless he has a quality replacement in mind to replace Lee. His defense might not be the same range wise, but I still think he saves Theriot/Ramirez a ton of errors. So putting Dunn, Burrell or Giambi at 1b could be pretty scary, and I don't see Hendry doing that. So I only see Lee getting traded if were getting another 1b back in the deal, or Hendry thinks he can get a Nick Johnson, Chad Tracy or another 1b cheap. But when you factor in Lee no-trade, it just seems very unlikely he's traded.

Burris/Sandoval. There's another one I am forgetting. Sandoval's my guy though. If they get a decent shortstop AND lee, their infield would be one of the best offensive in the NL, imo.

Not if Lee hits like he did in 08

Lee is not going to waive his NT to a team that might contend... If he moves, it'll be to a team that's certainly contending next season. I'm just as likely to play 1B for the Giants next season as he is.

According to this guy trading Green may allow the Padres to keep Peavy.

I don't think so. Towers already said in regards to the Peavy trade is that "the train has left the station." At this point you can not not trade a pitcher when you said you would. I suspect this increases the chances of Peavy being moved, because Peavy is not going to want to spend the next 4-5 yrs on a Padres team that will challenge the old Devil Rays for futility.

It could be strategy on the Padres part. Start moving some of your trade chips and see if Peavy becomes any less picky. Something tells me that a firesale just might get him to budge and explore other options.

I agree that they are moving Peavy, no question. But I wonder if Towers will use the Green move as negotiating leverage. (i.e. we reallly don't have to move Peavy now, so up your offer).

For the record, I tend to beleive that the Cubs and Pads have come to a tentative agreement on a package and that Hendry is trying to make it work witht he payroll. Of course, i also believe that a fat white dude from the North Pole is going to squeeze down my chimney in about four weeks.

Just saying....

My bet on the third team is the Giants and Sanchez being one of the players headed to San Diego. The Giants could bite on Marquis or Lee.

west coast not-withstanding, I can't imagine Lee lifting his NTC to go to that crap team

He lives in the bay area.

i know this. I still don't think he'll trade sleeping in his own bed for playing for a last place team

Technically, he would be trading NOT sleeping in his own bed and playing for a winning team to sleeping in his own bed while playing for lesser team.

The Cubs and Padres "have a basic framework in place" for a Jake Peavy deal built around third baseman Josh Vitters. Things may pick up after the Cubs' ownership situation is resolved.

From Buster Olney.

Just as Davearm2 suspected. I think the deal gets done at the Winter meetings.

Good news, when you have the opportunity to acquire a pitcher of Peavy's caliber you do everything you can and that includes possibly trading your top prospect(s). For as much as I hate to give up Vitters this is a move that has to get done, especially with how the Cubs are in a win now mode and by the time Vitters would be up, sept. of 2010 at the earliest but most likely and realistically 2011 or 2012 we may not have as strong a team. What a rotation...
