hold on to your seatbelts?

Isn't that what the saying is? Or is it something close to that? I may be going crazy :banghead:

It's either,

"hold onto your seats!" or

"fasten your seatbelts!"

"Hold on to your butts!"

If the third team is the Orioles, prepare yourselves for this process dragging itself out until Spring Training.

I doubt it's the O's. Why? Because apparently MacPhail is trying to convince either Tex or Burnett to come to Baltimore.

Im just curious as to who the mystery team is. Im assuming its a perenial non contender.

Marlins: they're always open to moving any player for the right prospect package

Royals: could Greinke, and maybe Teahen be involved somehow?

Rays: they have young talent to spare

Seattle: they need help any way they can get it.

Minnesotta: they're trying to re stock. Delmon Young would likely be involved.

Toronto? Baltimore? Washington?

Then again, it could be a last ditch attempt to pry Tommy Hanson away from the Braves.

Everything I read sounds like the Padres want young pitching.

Possibly the Marlins. It won't be the Royals because Greinke is unavailable and if he was he would cost (in players) almost as much as Peavy. I'm not sure what we could offer the Rays for young pitching. Minnesota's young pitching would cost too much (in players).

I offered a trade suggestion at OH:

Marquis + Vitters + Wells for Scott and 2 of Mikolo/Olsen/Tillman/Arrieta. Cubs flip the 2 young pitchers with Pie, Marshall, and Hart for Peavy. Cubs end up with Scott and Peavy. Possibly we could get Cedeno (to Padres) and Greene (to the O's) involved.

More likely, The Cubs are sending Marquis as part of the deal and Towers found a team that will give him some very young arms for him. That team may very well be the O's though not for any of the players mentioned.

If Towers got Pie, Marshall, Hart, Marquis and Vitters for Peavy and then flipped Marquis to someone for 2 players that were currently in Low A that would be a respectable deal, particularly since he has only one bidder and must make the deal.

From what I've read, the Padres want young ML-ready pitching, so they wouldn't want Low A ball pitchers and I doubt they want the hassle of trading Marquis.

Why the heck would the orioles do that?!?

I'm not sure the O's will do that, but I do know that they drool over Vitters, that they have a ton of young pitching, and they can use a veteran innings-eater like Marquis. Scott has no long-term future with the O's. The O's might really get involved if we added Cedeno (to the Padres) and Greene (to the O's) because they need a SS bad.

I'm not seeing why either San Diego or Baltimore would consider this one. We've pretty much offered all you are talking about giving up here for Peavy alone, and it wouldn't fly.

Baltimore isn't likely to trade either Tillman or Arrieta. They are extremely high on both of them. Additionally, they turned down San Diego's offer of Greene for Olson straight up, so they aren't really looking to move him, either. Getting Marquis doesn't add much for Baltimore, given his salary. Wells is pretty much irrelevant. They seem to be giving Scott away for nothing the way you have it.

You may be on to something with trying to work a three-way with these three teams, but the proposal you suggest just doesn't seem realistic to me. Maybe if we forget about trying to get Scott out of the deal, we would have a better chance of finding a good trade for all three teams that brings us Peavy. Or maybe Baltimore just isn't the third team that can make a deal for Peavy work.

From Churchill-

I heard this morning that the Cubs are "desperately" looking for a third team that could supply San Diego with the young players it would require to land Peavy.

So far, according to one of the Cubs' assistants, they have spoken to Tampa, Texas, Minnesota, Oakland and the Angels.

Chicago is willing to trade any arm on their roster outside of Z, Harden, Dempster and Marmol, as well as any regular not named Soto. Upon hearing that, I immediately asked about Ramirez and Lee, and at least this particular exec said "we'd look at that."

Seems like there is still just a remote chance it happens, but if it does it might just be more than Peavy to Chicago. It might include Lee going out, too, and the Cubs going out and signing or trading for a slightly lesser first baseman.

If this is true, it is great news. Lilly would be a nice pitcher/with a decent contract and should attract any of those teams named. Lee should have some decent value also.

As loaded as the Rangers are, I wonder if we can work out anything with them. Though I have no clue as to what.

Seriously, acquiring Peavy, getting rid of Lee and being able to acquire Teixeira instead seems ridiculously awesome.

Teixeira

Ramirez

Soto

DeRosa/Johnson

Kosuke/Theriot

Theriot/Cedeno

Peavy, Z, Harden, Lilly, Dempster

That's unbelievable.

I think the main reason they'd trade Lee would be to dump payroll so they could afford Peavy. I don't see how they could afford to get Peavy and then sign Teixeira. That's why Churchill said the guy told him they'd look for a cheaper/lesser 1B.

Lee + Marquis + a couple million of the 10-15 million likely remaining in a budget = Peavy + Teixeira

I don't see who is going to take on Marquis' salary, and it's questionable if anyone would take on Lee's. The Cubs ould have to eat a huge chunk of that. Plus where are you seeing that there is 10-15 million left? I thought it was a lot tighter than that.

Anyways, we're basing this off oss the guy he talked to, and that guy said they'd trade Lee to free up payroll and then sign a cheaper guy. If you believe one you kind of have to believe the other.

Aramis has an NTC. Lee would, to me, be the more replaceable.

isn't lee a 10/5 player now?

Doesn't matter.... he has a NTC.

I have a feeling Lee wouldn't mind leaving Chicago if he liked the team he was going to.

Pretty much. I don't see Hoffpauir being good enough to merit playing every day, so the Cubs will have to look for someone in FA. However, there don't appear to be many decent guys out there who will be cheap. Eric Hinske, Sean Casey, and Richie Sexson don't exactly sound like good options.
