In those proposed deals, we basically get no value whatsoever for Hill. I'd rather keep him if we're just giving him away.

Because Hill has no value.

Which is my exactly point. Why give him up if it's just as a throw in? I think it would be better to just hang onto him and see if he can do anything at all in ST. It's pretty unlikely, but there's a shot. I don't see the point in giving him away, which is exactly what we're doing if he has no value like you say.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Per rotoworld:

Sources told the Baltimore Sun that the Orioles are discussing a Felix Pie deal with the Cubs and are potentially the third team in a Jake Peavy trade.

Given their lack of a legitimate center fielder, the Padres could use Pie themselves. However, it doesn't appear that they're very high on the 23-year-old. If the Cubs send Pie to Baltimore for Garrett Olson, that might make them a more attractive trade partner. It was reported earlier this month that the Padres offered Khalil Greene to Baltimore for Olson.

Sorry if it's a repost.

Wait what? I don't understand what that means. If it's hostile, why? I was just giving you more information. I'm confused

Hill has no value - seriously, I'll say this a couple more times maybe, isn't that what the Indians said about Cliff Lee last year?

Everyone is so down on Hill, why can't he be Cliff Lee or Oliver Perez or something? Anyone remember Oliver Perez 2005-2006?

So you're saying that things are setting up perfectly for Hill?

He's saying that it would be better to hang onto him for a while longer just in case... as opposed to just giving him away.

From looking up information on Olson, it doesn't seem like this guy was a highly thought of prospect. The last two years he was ranked in the middle of the pack of Orioles prospects and was said to be a good to average prospect. Then last year he went 9-10, with a 6.65 era in 26 starts. Even if this guy figures it out, it sounds like he's going to be more of a middle rotation guy, and doesn't have the 1-2 starter potential Towers is probably looking for. So I can understand the Orioles interested in swapping Olson to take a chance on Pie. But I don't understand why Towers would be so high on Olson. Maybe he see something that others around the league don't see.(since he tried to trade for him last week)

Olson's not that much of a stiff. Age appropriate starting lefthanded pitchers who have nearly as many strikeouts as innings pitched in the minors are always going to draw interest.

Im just curious as to who the mystery team is. Im assuming its a perenial non contender.

Marlins: they're always open to moving any player for the right prospect package

Royals: could Greinke, and maybe Teahen be involved somehow?

Rays: they have young talent to spare

Seattle: they need help any way they can get it.

Minnesotta: they're trying to re stock. Delmon Young would likely be involved.

Toronto? Baltimore? Washington?

Then again, it could be a last ditch attempt to pry Tommy Hanson away from the Braves.

Everything I read sounds like the Padres want young pitching.

Possibly the Marlins. It won't be the Royals because Greinke is unavailable and if he was he would cost (in players) almost as much as Peavy. I'm not sure what we could offer the Rays for young pitching. Minnesota's young pitching would cost too much (in players).

I offered a trade suggestion at OH:

Marquis + Vitters + Wells for Scott and 2 of Mikolo/Olsen/Tillman/Arrieta. Cubs flip the 2 young pitchers with Pie, Marshall, and Hart for Peavy. Cubs end up with Scott and Peavy. Possibly we could get Cedeno (to Padres) and Greene (to the O's) involved.

Looks like I scooped the media about the O's being the 3rd team.

Rosenthal's latest on Peavy...

Peavy update No. 473

The Padres continue to discuss a trade of Peavy to the Cubs, but obstacles remain.

First, the Cubs are in the process of being sold; offers from their four remaining bidders are due by Monday. The Cubs already have re-signed free-agent right-hander Ryan Dempster for $52 million over four years. They almost certainly would need the blessing of a new owner to take on Peavy, who is owed $63 million over the next four seasons — and might ask for even more money to waive his no-trade clause.

The teams, meanwhile, are not close to a trade agreement. Padres general manager Kevin Towers is trying to involve a third club so he could get the package of players he desires. The Cubs almost certainly will need to move right-hander Jason Marquis, who is earning $9.875 million next season, to clear both payroll and a rotation spot for Peavy.

The Padres could take Marquis, with the Cubs including enough money in the deal to reduce his salary to say, $7 million. Or, they could spin Marquis and the cash from the Cubs to another club. The Rockies, Reds and Giants have shown varying degrees of interest in Marquis, according to a major-league source.

Another possibility is that the Padres could spin one or two of the prospects that they receive from the Cubs. A team might value a player such as outfielder Felix Pie more than the Padres do; the Orioles are again talking with the Cubs about Pie, according to The Baltimore Sun, and could emerge as the third team in the deal.

Hill may figure it out but he his clock is only running through March. He needs to be kept on the major league roster like a Rule V pick or he has to go on waivers. He wouldn't survive the waiver process because someone else would keep him in the majors to figure everything out. That might take years.

The choice is including him in a deal to get a top 5 pitcher or risking losing him for nothing in 5 months.

Sometimes things just come together against all odds. I'm hoping this is one of those times . For some reason, Towers seems to really want Olson. And apparently MacPhail is still really high on Pie. Even though Baltimore has no pitching, seems set in the outfield, and has no shortstop, MacPhail turned down Greene for Olson, but seems willing to do Pie for Olson. These things come together for us almost like a perfect storm. If replacing Pie with Olson in our package offered to the Padres gets us Peavy, don't ask why, just pray it happens!

I would like to say that an outfield of Nick Markakis, Felix Pie, and Adam Jones performing to their full potential would be sick. Of course, it has to actually come full circle for it to be that way and that might not happen.

But still, that's a pretty good outfield if Jones and Pie play like they have always been expected play like. Markakis is already awesome

Marquis in Colorado or Cincinnati would be very interesting.

I'm not saying it won't happen, but from the sounds of Rosenthal, there are just so many obsticles to overcome in order to make it happen. And if the Cubs are so tight on money, getting Peavy would certainly greatly lessen the odds of getting a good RF, something I've deemed as more of a need than SP (although Peavy certainly isn't just any other SP)

I think at this point, Hendry is going to do whatever it takes (well at least, I hope so). For the RF thing, would we be content with Luke Scott? He's cheap, but put up some alright numbers last year. He's the left-handed bat we're looking for.

I don't know...we'll see what Jimbo can do.

I'm all for acquiring Scott as part of this deal. The local favorite seems to be Ibanez, but he'll add $8+ million per year. Scott/DeRosa/Johnson in RF with DeRosa/Fontenot at 2B would offset the loss of Edmonds' 2008 production.

I would personally not like to see Luke Scott in a Cubs uniform. I don't know who else we could get, but Scott played LF last year with a poor AVG and OBP. He also was worse during Day games and on the Road. I see him, at best, as a platoon partner with Mark DeRosa in right, which makes Fontenot a starter versus LHP's. Luke Scott is also 30 years old with "lukewarm" numbers over his career. I would rather see Hoffpauir platoon there if we can't afford someone better. And I realize his defense in right will be bad.
