they ain't getting him for $7M per year, no chance.

I don't think it's that far-fetched. The free agent market is pretty tight this year, and he's almost a part-time player.

jose guillen got 3 years, 36 million coming off a worse season, and he had character issues and performance-enhancing drug rumors swirling around him.

The economy was also different last year.

not different to the point that similar major league players are going to be taking a 50% pay cut.

i'll be stunned if they get him for $7m per year, i'll leave it at that.

Even if this economy I didn't expect Bradley to get less than 10m a year. 2/18 is as low of a contract I could see him offered.

I'd be kind of surprised if they got Bradley, considering Lou's obsession with adding a lefty

Bradley career as LHB vs RHP- .270 /.362 /.436

Bradley career as RHB vs LHP- .303 /.387 /.504

I'm not saying I care... but I could imagine Lou and Jim caring since they desire a lefty so badly. Im not sure they're going to choose a guy who is a .798 OPS guy as a lefty

Do you really think they look at stats that closely? He bats lefty. I like Fontenot, love his plate approach. But is there really a difference between him and DeRosa? It's just handedness. Bradley can bat lefty.

BTW, I like Bradley, always have.

Well I'd hope that they look that closely at statistics. The whole point (for them) is to add a good lefty. Bradley isn't good as as lefty.

I'm not saying I care... I want Bradley and I don't really care about the lefty stuff anyways. It would just surprise me since Lou is so smitten on every available lefty... lefty

Really? That's the only difference you see between the two of them in terms of their plate approach? Their value to the Cubs? Not being critical, just honestly curious about your feelings here.

Edit: It appears you were estimating what things looked like through Lou/Hendry's eyes. Retracted

Another reason to add a lefty is to make the pitcher face hitters from different sides of the plate. I don't know if its been studied or not, but conventional baseball knowledge is that if a pitcher faces a bunch of guys from one side of the plate then hes able to lock in on his spots. If its mixed with righties and lefties he has to move around the plate (and possibly the rubber) and it makes it more difficult for him to get in a groove. I guess I can understand that based on muscle memory and repeated motion (aka getting in a groove).

I agree, but I don't think Lou thinks that way. I remember during the season people got annoyed at the way he'd stack the lineup with all righties against LHP.

Well, Ibanez's splits vs. RHP are better: .288/.353/.470/.824

Of course, he's 36.

Bradley had a .926 OPS vs. RHP last year. And it was in the AL, although I'm not sure that with his home ballpark and the pitching in the AL West that its much different conditions than the NL.

Bradley's career numbers are what they are, but you'd have to consider the fact that he's blown them away the last two seasons. His OPS hitting lefty has exceeded .900 in each.

LAS VEGAS -- The Cubs are doing their homework in trying to determine whether free-agent outfielder Milton Bradley would be a good fit.

Bradley, 31, who is coming off his best season, in which he hit .321, with 22 homers and 77 RBIs, may be the left-handed bat the Cubs need.

after the contract received by cc, and the rumored contraacts to lowe/burnett, i remain even more convinced that $7m per year is absurd.

I don't know. With the economy the way it is, the trend is for top of the line performers getting their money, while the second tier people take the hit. The fact that CC got what he got while Rodriguez settled for what he got makes me think GMs are reprioritizing. The demand for aces hasn't taken a hit. But the demand for others? Clearly it's not high enough to have set off bidding wars yet, which is fairly late in the game for movement to just be starting. Bradley fits the Cubs needs, but how many other teams can afford to spend millions on a guy they know won't play a full season? NY is paying CC because they expect 35 starts and 250 innings (plus nobody else even put their pole in the water there). But I don't see teams going gaga over a guy when they are hoping for 100 starts if things work out.

Anyway, I don't think the money being paid/offered to CC and other #1 starter types is really all that indicative of where the market lies for the rest of the crowd.

My thought was the production of DeRosa last year and Fontenot vs. righties last year is similar, i.e., the Cub offense will score about the same amount of runs with either the primary second baseman. I don't think having another lefty bat, namely Fontenot's, really makes a difference.

Now if that lefty bat was Texeira I suppose it would (I know he's a switch hitter).

Outfielder on the way

Cubs general Manager Jim Hendry had a meeting this afternoon with Seth Levinson, who represents free agent outfielders Milton Bradley and Raul Ibanez. At a lunch today with other big league managers, Lou Piniella told me that the Cubs will get a left-handed hitter for the lineup within the next couple of days. Bradley is a switch hitter who was mostly a DH in 2008. Ibanez is a left-handed hitter but has played mostly left field. Bradley would be more suited to be a right fielder for the Cubs.

Through baseball sources I've been able to find out that Bradley has already been looked at by Cubs trainers during the last month.

I'm really excited at the idea of getting Peavy, but I think at this point I'm just as excited at the thought of getting Bradley, mostly because I thought it was a guarantee we'd end up getting Ibanez/Abreu (which of course is still possible at this point).

Great news, I really want Bradley and I think his attitude is something that this team needs not to mention a .999 OPS

Posted
I think we should expect more of a high .800s OPS

I'm not as thrilled about bradley as I was now that it looks like DeRosa is on his way out

Yeah I know expecting a .999 OPS is crazy and mid-high .800 OPS is more likely.

Sarcasm? What team on Earth would need an attitude like Bradley's?
