The White Sox have the inside track on free agent outfielder Bobby Abreu, according to the New York Daily News.

The Chi Sox would likely want to move Jermaine Dye first and have been in talks with the Reds to do just that. Abreu, 34, batted .296/.371/.471 last season with 20 home runs and 100 RBI. He also stole 22 bases. It's going to take at least a three-year deal to ink him.

They can have him

They're getting rid of Dye so they can add Abreu? What?

The only thing I can think of is that they can get Abreu for less money, and something of value from the Reds.

If he costs the same as Dye, and they get crap from the Reds, it makes no sense.

C'mon Jim let's get this Bradley deal put to bed!

This probably won't materialize until a decision is made on Peavy.

You could be right, but the Cubs sure seem to be singing the opposite tune this week (RF then Peavy).

With Marquis now potentiall being a part of the Peavy deal, Hendry needs to know how much of his contract he will have to eat to know how much he can spend on a RF AND Peavy.

FWIW, don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but Levine said this morning (on Waddle and Silvy) that he thinks it's "more than likely" we'll end up with Bradley.

I hope so! He's a real upgrade to the offense.

You can spin that logic either way though.

If the RF thing happens first, and that cost becomes known, then you've got a clearer picture of how the Marquis/DeRosa/Peavy thing has to fit together monetarily.

If Peavy goes first, then you know what's left to spend on RF.

Given the Cubs have been pretty consistent in saying RF is their top priority, I tend to think the first sequence is the one they prefer.

Bradley and Peavy probably equates to the best offseason in my lifetime, even considering losing Wood for nothing (other than creating more payroll flexibility). Friggin' awesome.

Supposedly, Bradley has actually been seen by team doctors in Mesa and checked out to see if he can handle playing the OF.

I knew we had checked up on him medically, but I didn't know our doctors had actually examined him and not his records.

Well if the doc's thought he was still capable of playing the OF he should be a Cub shortly.

Aren't those #s pretty close to the #s DeRo put up this year?

With the Peavy thing dead in the water, we may as well just get Bradley and call it an off season. I highly doubt we have a shot at Furcal, and theres really nothing else we need. Projected opening day roster

LF Soriano

SS Theriot

3B Ramirez

C Soto

RF Bradley

1B Lee

2B DeRosa

CF Fukudome

Bench-Fontenot

Bench-Johnson

Bench-Cedeno

Bench-Hoffpauir/Pie

Bench-Koyie Hill

SP Zambrano

SP Harden

SP Lilly

SP Dempster

SP Marquis

BP Marshall

BP Wuertz

BP Gaudin

BP Gregg

BP-Shark

BP Cotts

CL Marmol

That doesnt look bad by any stretch. Certainly better than anything else in the NL. Hopefully they can play that way come October :D

I agree. I would rather have Gregg close than Marmol, but the same 25. I would think they should keep Pie on the major league roster rather than get rid of him (out of options) despite the fact that Hoffpauir would bring more to the table. Or maybe just go with 11 pitchers for the first few weeks (have Wuertz or Shark in AAA) and carry both Pie and Hoffpauir.

Looks like I spoke too soon. Oh well - lets get Bradley now.

The Phillies stepped up their efforts to sign Raul Ibanez on Thursday, according to one baseball man who had spoken with them.

Ibanez has been sending signals through friends that the Phillies are his top choice. And two high-ranking Phillies officials -- outgoing GM Pat Gillick and assistant GM Benny Looper -- know Ibanez well from their days in Seattle. One source described talks between the club and Ibanez's agents, Seth and Sam Levinson, as "heating up," and said the two sides have made progress.

I didn't want Ibanez at all. But if the Rays can convince Bradley to go there, the Phillies get Ibanez, the White Sox get Abreu, does that leave us Dunn?

Id take that "consolation" prize.
