I know they still had some tests to run on his ankle, but I didn't think the "high ankle sprain" diagnosis was in question. Nice.

I have very strong doubts that this is anything but a smoke screen to keep opponents guessing. He's got a high ankle sprain and is going to miss 3-4 games.

What would that do? The gameplan isn't going to change much at all if Grossman plays instead of Orton and they're the same type of QB.

I don't think the Bears' opponent three weeks from now is presently concerned with whether Grossman or Orton is going to play.

They are not the same type of QB, Grossman is a bigger deep threat who is more easily rattled with blitzes. Orton does a much better job handling pressure and avoiding the rush. I would think defensive game plans would vary somewhat significantly depending on whether a team was expecting to face Orton or Grossman.

Aside from that point, however, all NFL teams are paranoid when it comes to giving out injury information and insist on lying at every step. If you refute the notion that there are differences, teams very clearly act as though there are, which leads me to believe the "Orton isn't really injured" story is just a story.

I'm quite worried that Chris Johnson is going to burn us like crazy. I'm predicting something like the AP games last year.

AND the guy can catch, which makes him all the more dangerous.

I see the Bears losing by a touchdown, more if Grossman wets the bed.

Someone mentioned the TE, but Grossman loves Des Clark, and didn't throw much to Olsen last year.

No the Grossman 2.0 last year (Where he was much better) loved tossing that fade route to Olsen.

Were those fade routes actually completed? In the games where Grossman played after he got back, Olsen had:

Raiders: no catches

Seattle: 7 catches, 43 yards

Denver: 1 catch, 10 yards

Giants: 2 catches, 7 yards

In the Washington game, all 3 of Olsen's catches were after Griese replaced Grossman.

Their longest connection during that whole time? That 10 yard pass in Denver. That's a rather short fade pattern if it isn't in the end zone. Plus there were no TD catches.

It looks like Olsen was only used only as a safety valve when Grossman came back. They didn't send him down the field at all. Olsen's value came last year only when Griese was in.

Relieved that his right ankle is just sprained and not broken, Chicago Bears quarterback Kyle Orton hopes to play this week against the unbeaten Tennessee Titans.

"I'm certainly not ruling out anything," Orton said Wednesday. "I don't know exactly what the timetable's going to be, but I just feel if I keep on making improvement, I certainly can't rule out this week."

There was one, IIRC, that was called back due to a completely unnecessary hold by Fred Miller... it was a long TD pass vs Denver. I could be wrong, but I don't think the play wouldn't have been completed had there been no hold.

But yea, you're pretty much right. Just thought I'd toss that in because it came to mind right away.

Not that terrific. Remember Tony Romo said the same thing 3 weeks ago? He went from saying he was going to try and play Week 7, to being out a month like was originally diagnosed. Not the same injury, but the point is, you shouldn't listen to a player when he says he might play and is easily not 100% able to do so.

Posted

As expected, Orton did not practice today. Also not practicing were Mike Brown due to his calf injury. Booker, Harris and Tillman all sat out for rest.

Good news is Brandon Lloyd and Danieal Manning both had a full practices for the first time in weeks.

If Grossman fumbles a snap im going to throw my beer on the floor and go haywire.

I hope the Titans try to pound the rock, i like CJ but i dont think he can grind down this defense, he might pop one or two but thats it. And if he does, well at least we can see this defense get beat differently this week. Titans passing O is CJ and TE Bo Scaife. Nobody on the outside scares me so id like to see some press man coverage and attack Collins in the pocket by bringing the heat.

I would some of that for a change too. Hopefully Tommie can get his act together.

CJ doesn't have to grind, they have LenDale Lard@#$ for that. We managed to contain AP pretty well, so I hope we can do the same for CJ, but he has a Devin Hester gear.

keeping AP under 250 yrds isnt containing him. (edit: 125 yrds rusing and 2td's. thats not "containing him")

I think Tommie will have a big game. he's been coming on lately, 2 sacks in 2 games, I hope this is his BIG game

Just out of curiosity, how many more weeks should we keep saying this before concluding that he's not going to?

Yep, you are right. I went back to stats, and it was Griese who tried to stretch the field with Olsen. My bad dog.

If I was Fisher, I'd be tempted to paint a red "X" about seven steps behind the line of scrimmage and just tell the D line to rush to that point.

Grossman changed. He became panicky last year as the season progressed. So panicky, that I don't know that I trust him in there against a strong pass rushing team like Tennessee. As the pocket starts to close, which generally happens with the Bears long before a guy can get downfield for a long pass, he looks for the quickest place to dump the ball.

If the line gives him time, and Rex is given the opportunity to trust the line, he can be dangerous against any defense.

The Rex who basically lost his job after last year was the guy who seemed like he was paranoid to even be out there. Afraid to make a mistake, afraid of what was going on behind him where he can't see, afraid of throwing another INT, afraid of being sacked and hurt again and afraid of the fans reaction. Deer caught in the headlights syndrome.

I like Rex, but I've been very concerned about his ability to lead the team. I was one of the last to fall from that grace, and now that it's gone, he needs to go out and regain that admiration and respect. This is the perfect team for him to do it against. Sunday is all about Rex.

But has he changed some since then also? When he came back last year, he put together a few solid games before getting hurt. He had 1 great, 2 good, and 1 mediocre game when he started toward the end of last year. He also took 16 sacks in those games. I don't know if that means he takes too many sacks because he's shaky in the pocket or if that shows he's improved enough to have solid games while getting hit that many times.

Tommie looked great vs. Detroit on Sunday. He looked quick and healthy.

2 tackles, 1 sack -- bringing his season total to 8 tackles, 2 sacks. Might be better than earlier in the year, but I'd hardly call it "great." Kris Jenkins has 21 tackles right now, and he's a run clogger.

So, we're looking at a boxscore to determine how well a d-lineman played? Harris should have been credited w/ 2 sacks first off, but the QB may have made it back to the line of scrimmage. He was in the backfield quite frequently, and the Bears not coincedently maybe had their best game putting pressure on the QB all year. It was clear Sunday that Harris made the D better, 3 of the 4 quarters.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned the weather yet, but right now the forecast calls for temperatures in the upper 30s and a chance of snow.

accuweather is calling for a high of 42 and no snow. Possible snow saturday night.

I hope the field is in better shape this week. Horrible conditions do not play to the Bears strengths.

I would say I've noticed some improved play - Tommie's job is to disrupt, not necessarily make a bunch of tackles - but he's far from looking great.
