I know his name has been branded about on this board, and I like him as a player, but apparently Rosenthal is reporting that atleast four teams have inquired about him.

Four teams have already inquired with the Marlins about Jeremy Hermida, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Florida seems to have soured on Hermida somewhat, so he could well be available. The Marlins could target a young closer or a third baseman in return.

What would it take to get Hermida, knowing he's prolly available?

I'd do Ceda for Hermida.

What's wrong with Ryan Tucker for "young Marlins closer" (besides him going to a crappy HS)?

Hermida's #1 comparable on baseballreference.com, thru age 23 is Shawn Green. He was 24 this season. If Shawn Green is a good comparison (and I think he is due to size/skill level), then Hermida is due for a huge breakout next year at 25. If it takes Ceda and an arm for him, I'd do it 10 times out of 10. This is exactly the type of move the Cubs should make. Hermida would provide young, cheap production. For a team that has high priced players throughout the roster, cheap production is a welcomed addition.

Yes, youth good

After waiting this long I hope Hendry is setting his sights higher.

As much as I'd love to see Hendry go after a top-flight OF, our farm system is enormously limited at the moment. Don't expect us to make any big trades this winter unless Jimbo can pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Hermida would be a nice left-handed buy lowish candidate to stick in RF. I wouldn't complain.

I would love to see what Hermida could do in Wrigley for 81 games. The Cubs haven't had a legit LH power threat since.....Billy Williams? Unless you count the 1 good year each from Henry Rodriguez, Mark Bellhorn (switch), and Rick Wilkins. Hermida has 30-40 HR potential. Shawn Green jumped from 16 to 35 HRs at 25, this should be the time Hermida makes a similar jump.

I can't see replacing Fukudome with someone that had worse 2008 production on the hope he breaks out. If you put Hermida in RF, and slide Fukudome over to CF, then what have you gained over Pie in CF and Fukudome in RF? Either way the team is banking on a 24 year old breakout season.

If you're going to roll the dice, why not just use what you have and not give up cheap assets to move laterally.

Hermida was such a stud prospect, and he has been productive. His home park isn't helping him. I always think of Utley who had pedigree and terrific minor league numbers but took a couple of years to establish himself. I don't really doubt that Hermida would have a few .900 ops seasons in a friendlier park.

I'll gladly take 1998-2002 Shawn Green.

Hermida is no slouch. Dude had a .398 career OBP in the minors. He's shown flashes of what his power could become. Last year he hit .296/.369/.501. A .205 ISOP is pretty solid. And as has been mentioned, he plays in a huge home park. He had a .584 OPS in Florida this year. For his career, his OPS is over 100 points lower at home.

To further expound on what raw said, check out his splits in 07 and 08:

Home 08: .203/.273/.312/.585; Away: .288/.364/.487/.851 (.729 OPS)

Home 07: .267/.333/.452/.785; Away: .324/.401/.548/.949 (.870 OPS)

The away splits are not bad for a down year. Get him out of Pro Player and he should return to form. He's young, had a strong 2007 season, has good power and a fantastic, patient eye. Importantly, he's young, talented and cheap. That's very important for a team who has to deal with backloaded contracts for aging players in the very near future while trying to stay competitive.

As an aside, anyone think Ricky Nolasco will be available also this offseason?

Why would you think that? I think he's their #3-4 starter next year.

Approaching arbitration and selling high?

Yes.

I guess so. But I don't see the Cubs being interested.

Agreed. It'll be interesting to see what they get for Nolasco...I'm guessing a few players far more talented than Juan Pierre.

Andy Dolan at desipio (who hates us btw), claims to have a source in the know and presents this information:

Really, my main goal in life is to become one of those quasi-media people who people near the Cubs organization float rumors to. I may have actually met that goal!

Somebody who could concievably know e-mailed me to say that when the Cubs gathered in Arizona yesterday for the start of their organizational meetings that they were expected to spend a lot of time talking about how to “fix” a 97 win team by finding some guys who actually use the other batter’s box from time to time.

They are giving serious thought to turning Kosuke into a platoon centerfielder with Reed Johnson next year. (No shock there.)

But who would they go after to fill right field? It’s not a free agent. It’s a guy who has lit them up in the past, though. Yes, the 21st Century Jeff Blauser acqusition! Get excited.

According to this guy, the Cubs have already talked to the Florida Marlins about 24-year old rightfielder Jeremy Hermida. Hermida was the 11th player in the 2002 draft out of high school.

Some more tidbits:

The source says little discussion will be given at the organizational meetings to re-signing Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood, because the Cubs long ago made those priorities. He also said should the Cubs pull off an unlikely Derrek Lee trade, that Lou Piniella does not see Micah Hoffpauir as a legitimate every day option at first base. (Thank god.)

He also said that while the Cubs will talk to the Orioles about Brian Roberts again, that he thought that the Orioles think keeping Roberts would make their bid to sign hometown boy Mark Teixeira mnore likely (sure, he’s going to the Orioles, whatever). And, just to depress me, he said he’s sure that Hendry thinks Ryan Theriot is a legit shortstop and unless Theriot was part of a big trade, that he wouldn’t be going anywhere.
