Maybe I'm just being blinded by my insane hatred for Hunter Pence...I mean, I know he's 25 and has put up decent numbers over a couple of seasons..... but a package built around Hunter Pence for Jake Peavy?

Is there some other Pence other than Hunter in the Astros system? Am I missing some obvious sarcastic joke?

I thought Meph was being sarcastic, but then nilo followed with a serious response and now I'm very confused.

Me too.

I don't know why that's so unrealistic. Pence is a talented player. Probably would still be a crappy move if he is the most talented player in the trade going to SD, but he's not a horrible player.

If Hunter Pence gets to be the center of a package for Peavy, then Reed Johnson should work just as well.

Whaaaa?

Slightly hyperbolic because of ages and Pence's lack of platoon split, but they aren't far off in what they would be expected to produce.

Pence also has a career line of .269 .318 .466 when his BABIP isn't 60-70 points higher than it should be, and he's nothing special defensively. Seriously, on an offense+defense basis, how much better is he going to be than Pie next year? If Pie OPS's .700? And he's the centerpiece for Peavy?

I know his 2007 numbers were fuelled by a pretty crazy BABIP, but still, hes probably somewhere inbetween this year and last year. Hes an 800+ OPS guy who plays a pretty decent CF. We haven't seen the patience he displayed in the minors and if he does realize it we're looking at a league minimum Mike Cameron. Thats nothing to sneeze at. I also think the fact that he has succeeded two years in a row in the majors alleviates a lot risk of top unproven prospects, lets say a guy like Colby Rasmus, that a team would build into their valuation of him.

If you were Stl would you offer up Rasmus and Anderson, along with a couple others? Im pretty sure I would, and Im pretty sure the Padres would take something like that.

I think 2008 is a lot closer to where he is than 2007. His batted balls remained largely the same, and his BABIP came down to reasonable levels. With his age he could improve of course, but given his swing at everything mentality(his P/PA is Theriotian, 108th of 147 qualified), I think he's a little more exploitable than most. He's also an average defensive CF who didn't play an inning there last year, and doesn't have a great arm.

Ech. Peavy to the Cardinals makes me nervous.

his batted balls remained largely the same? if going from a league average LD% to the worst in the league is remaining largely the same, then fine. he's a .330-.340 BABIP kind of guy. That'll get him .300/.350/.500 if he doesn't develop more power or learn to walk more frequently.

i dont see how he compares to reed johnson in any way

My bad, I somehow saw both of his LD as 19, instead of the 13 from last year. Even then, he still outperformed his LD% in '08, and not by the "oh he's got good speed it should be a little higher than expected" amount either.

Peavy and family apparently said they would be comfortable with a trade to the Cubs (MLBTR and SD writers). But what would we start with as our proposal? Obviously, Felix Pie, who has been long coveted by the Padres, then..........?

Rich Hill?

Donald Veal?

Mitch Atkins?

Casey McGehee?

Jose Ceda? (the Pads probably regret trading him in the first place)

Mark DeRosa?

Sean Marshall?

Jason Marquis?

Tony Thomas?

Or how about a combination of all those players?

I think Hendry and Co. should at least look into exploring this trade for Jake Peavy with San Diego. At least make the phone call please.

First off, you can take Marquis and DeRosa out of the deal. Rebuidling teams generally have no use for verterans in the last year of their contracts.

It would have been really nice if Rich Hill would have gotten it back together and been the 5th starter down the stretch. I agree with Meph here. Teams want 2 things when trading star players. Either potential star prospects or good cheap major league production. The Cubs have 2 prospects that teams may see as potential stars. One has about 50 ABs in full season baseball, the other has a no-trade clause. The only good cheap ML production the Cubs have is Soto, Theriot, and Marmol. The Cubs aren't very likely to trade any of them for the same reason that teams want them.

I don't see us completing this deal with Felix Pie as the centerpiece. I think it would have to include Soto.

I think it depends on how they feel about Rich Hill. I agree, Pie definitely cannot be the centerpiece. They would be interested in him, but he couldn't be the #1 in the deal.

A lot of people seem to think that our farm system doesnt have much to offer. Thats really not true. Much like the major league club, our system has a lot of promising prospects, we just dont have that one superstar in the system like a Gamel or a Rasmus. Vitters is the closest thing, but hes too young to know how much value he'll have in the long run.

Wed have to deal with quantity more than quality. With a team like the Padres, we could easily get a deal without someone like Soto or Marmol. Wed take Pie, Marshall, and Ceda or Ascanio and go from there.

Yes, I've been saying the whole time we have the "interesting" prospects that would fill out a deal, but we really don't have that one big guy that needs to be there. IMO the only guy that they might consider that big guy is Hill, maybe you could make a case for Theriot.

I don't think Pie, Marshall, and Ceda gets us anywhere near the table.
