Jim Hendry was in position to wait last year. He didn't get Roberts and the team won 97 games. It's not like he was going after Roy Halladay because he had four rookies in the starting rotation. Time was not of the essence.

If anything, it showed that Hendry is reasonable in the face of unforeseen circumstances.

The fact that they won 97 games after the whole thing happened is irrelevant. At the time they were coming off an 85 win season and a 3 game sweep in the playoffs. That's irrelevant too though. We can argue about this all day and we'll still have different opinions. You think it showed that he was reasonable. Fine. I think that it showed you can dick around and he won't walk away. Part of trading away good proven players is knowing how far you can string along and haggle the interested parties without losing them. MacPhail basically got a free pass with that. If every Gm had that advantage then nobody would ever be traded until right before ST started.

Remember when DonnieD said he'd reveal his "source" on Friday if nothing had happened?

Maybe he will...remember, he posts late at night.

Raisin, was that you that he gave the info too?

Yes it was.

I think I asked this awhile ago, but I don't remember getting an answer:

what could he possibly be able to divulge on this certain day that he couldn't before. Obviously you can't say exactly, but can anyone give an example of how that even makes sense?

From what I read, I'm guessing he won't divulge his information until after a deal is made.

see, that makes a bit more sense. . . but it seems some people were expecting something Friday (I think I recall Donnie saying something about Friday, too.)

I seem to recall something about Friday also, but I don't remember exactly why. It could be that Friday was the day they hoped something would be done, since that was the day teams could start talking to free agents.

I'm pretty sure he said Friday because this was the day he'd have the source until.

From all the rumors I remember, MacPhail and Hendry had a trade worked out, but Angelos wouldn't sign off on it.

I don't see why you're making a big deal of this. I doubt Hendry will spend much time working with MacPhail this offseason.

As far as the Peavy talks are concerned, why should Hendry walk away from a potential deal for Peavy. He's lucky enough to be one of 2 GM's who are seriously being considered to land Peavy. Meanwhile, Hendry is not sitting on his hands waiting for Towers to make a decision. The Cubs have already made a couple of trades this offseason, which is more action than many other teams have had so far.

I'm not making a big deal out of it. I made a passing comment on it and like 3 people bashed me for it so I defend myself, that's all.

And for like the 4th time, nothing I have said has anything to do with Hendry and the Peavy talks. I don't have any problem with the Peavy stuff.

As far as Donnie giving up some more info -- which some of us were remembering -- I did find this quote from very late monday night . . .

Lame Donnie D unless your gonna be on your sources christmas card list this season with some free tickets spill

My source will still be a potential source for the next 3 days so I can't go and ruin it now. If nothing has happened by Friday morning I will give up more information.

So there you go. It'll be interesting to wait for him tonight :)

edited to add: dextermorgan did remember right, I just was able to confirm it. my own memory . . . not so good.

Don't get your hopes up too much. There was information he shared with mods that gave me the impression he may want to hold off on sharing that info beyond Friday. But, that's just my take. He may spill the beans tonight.

Let's just say that I don't doubt what he has shared, but I'm keeping my guard up, simply because anything can change in a moment's notice.

I believe what he says, but I wouldn't get too excited about the info.

Why? Because the person isn't reputable, or because things change?

Personally I hope he doesn't give it up tonight. While I don't post much, i read almost everything (including every page of this thread). From what i have read, he seems pretty reputable and I don't recall him ever just having spread rumors around. He seemed afraid that him telling may hurt the Cubs chances, so whatever it is, I think we should just respect his wishes (including those few that keep harassing him about it despite him being nice enough share what he can).

DonnieD...buddy, i hope your right, but remember, no need to prove everyone right this minute. We can all wait until the time is right. And (assuming you are being truthful), thanks for sharing, I know I appreciate it.

Understandable. I'm not so much giddy about hearing something convincing as I am a bit fearful that I will lose in faith in the guy. As far as insider sources on message boards go, though, I'm really not worried about this one.

Not that the person isn't reputable but it depends on Donnie's read/judgement of the situation.

And yes, things can easily change.

This! That's why I'm saying people shouldn't get their hopes up that he'll spill the beans tonight. I'm in complete agreement with everything in this quote, especially the bolded.

Given the information I have, I'm not sure.

It really comes down to Donnie's judgement of his source.

I wish I could say. Since I'm not willing to put all my stock into a bit of insider info, I can't say whether he'll be a Cub or not.

First off, Hendry needs to put together a package that Towers will have a tough time saying no to.

I'll probably get a lot of argument from Meph, but I'm probably the biggest Peavy fan on this message board. I've seen him pitch time and again. He's amazing. He is right on course with "Z" as far as emotions are concerned, also.

Don't piss him off. Peavy doesn't take too well to a bad outing, or even balls that should have been called strikes, for that matter. Very intense player who likes to swing the bat and will challenge anyone at the plate.

Donnie's source is probably Peavy's agent or Peavy's agent's wife or something like that. They probably told Donnie that Peavy won't go to the Braves and it looks like it is the Cubs. And I believe that is the truth, but it doesn't mean anything. Peavy can change his mind and end up in NY or something. Or if the Cubs offer isn't good enough then SD could decide to keep him. I just feel like the sooner this gets done the better. Cuz the longer we wait, the more likely someone can change their mind and have Peavy go somewhere else.

Did Donnie say his source said Peavy is 100% going to be a Cub? All I remember reading is that Peavy will not go to Atlanta, and it looks like the best bet is on the Cubs, followed by staying with SD, followed by a longshot like NYY. What I took out of his info was that Peavy will not go to Atlanta, and based on today's news it seems like he very well may be correct. He did post that at a time when it looked like Peavy to Atlanta was going to happen. We won't know until a trade happens (or doesn't happen), but if what I remmebr is correct, he may already be right.

I assume the source is Peavy, Axelrod, or Towers.

Regardless, this is good news if Atlanta is really backing off. Hopefully Hendry can close the deal soon.
