Upset Alert

Game of the Week

checking up on the accuracy (only last two weeks)

12-3 90+

4-1 80-90

6-3 70-80

1-3 60-70

2-2 50-60

Meph I just want to point out you have a beautiful new avatar.

KSU over Texas Tech is a good pick for upset, though KSU has not played as well as I thought they would. Colorado has been decent this year compared to past couple of years, but Texas is playing much better than I had hoped for and McCoy is playing great. Texas should put up 50 again.

only two undefeated teams in the Big 10 are Penn State and Northwestern

and the only undefeated team in the SEC East is.....Vanderbilt.

and PSU doesn't play Northwestern this year....oh noes, controversy alert!

So luckily, the 10 pm Cubs start means that my previously scheduled Saturday of going to the Notre Dame game and later listening to see if my alma mater can go 6-0 for the first time since 1965 can proceed - the only alteration is a premature ending to that last part.

Both ND and Ball State are much better than their opponents and should win rather easily. BSU will likely jump into the polls for what I believe will be the first time in school history with a victory.

Ball State started 5-0 in 1978 before suffering their only loss of the season to Louisiana Tech on their way to a 10-1 season (with no bowl bid, since the MAC was between contracts and didn't have any tie-in). That was the year Dave Wilson and Mark O'Connell shared the QB job and Brady and Jon Hoke were both defensive starters. I believe they wound up high enough in the "also receiving votes" category that they would have finished the season ranked if the rankings were for the top 25 rather than top 20 back then. I don't think they've even sniffed the rankings since then until this year.

Northern Colorado at UC Davis (9 pm)

I really hope the Cubs are up 2-0 on the Dodgers because I'm not liking having to miss a majority of Game 3 if the series is tied at 1.

If Virginia Tech's offense can go to Lincoln and put up 35 points in primetime, then I think Mizzou could push 60. Mizzou's history in Lincoln still terrifies me, but the gap between the two teams isn't really different from last year when Mizzou won by 5 touchdowns.

Northern Illinois at Tennessee (7 pm)

I think we might win this game, but it likely won't be pretty. Fulmer has announced there is a QB controversy in Knoxville as Jonathon Crompton will fight it out with Nick Stephens for the starting job.

While I would prefer giving all the reps to Stephens, I like this move. The offense simply isn't getting anything done right now and the primary reason for that is Crompton. He has the most potential of any of our QBs, I think, but it's looking right now like he can't make the adjustments on-field and get his mindset right.

It'll be interesting to see how many people show up Saturday. Tickets are going on E-bay for face value (unheard of in Tennessee) and there are thoughts we won't top 80,000. If that happens the rest of the year, people may finally get their wish and see Fulmer gone.

Kentucky vs. Bama should be an interesting game, similar teams as far as relying on the running game and defenses. Obviously, Bama's win vs. Georgia was huge and they deserve to be top 5 team. The wins vs. Clemson and Arkansas were big as well, but I'm not sold on the quality of either team. With that said, UK hasn't beaten anyone and doesn't have near the talent nor coaching as Bama. Despite somewhat of a letdown after last week, I have Bama winning 24-10.

NIU could make things interesting if they play as well as they did last week. I know it was only Eastern Michigan, but the defense looked rock solid and NIU has insane depth at running back. I think they'll hang in there for a little bit before Tennessee pulls it out.

Actually I have some friends making the trip to Neyland and if ticket prices are going that cheap, I might bite on that seeing how SIU and Illinois both have roadies this week.

A couple of buddies of mine got good seats in Neyland for $40 apiece. It looks like decent seating is going for roughly face value - if you want to see Neyland, now may be the time to jump on it.

I figure the game will go something like the UAB game did. Remains close for much of the first half, and then Tennessee pulls away to win relatively easily in the second half. NIU is probably a little better than UAB, though, so the Vols better actually show up.

I have to admit, I'm worried about ISU. Our lines (D & O) are just not getting the job done.

Iowa State isn't exactly a team that can expose those weaknesses. If KU can get a decent pass rush ISU will be in trouble, since they haven't shown the capacity to run the ball yet. The defensive line has a few pass rushers, but is pretty weak against the run. If the team that played the 2nd half against UNLV shows up it could be close, but if the team that had 38 total yards in the 1st half of that game plays, Kansas can name the score.
