Threat of rain casts doubts on Mets' plans down stretch

The forecast called for rain starting Thursday evening, which could postpone the finale of a four-game series between the Mets and Chicago Cubs. There also is a possibility of rain the following three days, when the Mets are scheduled to close the regular season against the Florida Marlins.

With the Cubs preparing to host their playoff opener at Wrigley Field next Wednesday, Chicago manager Lou Piniella doesn't want to have to come back to New York for a makeup game on Monday -- which would be necessary if it's needed to decide a playoff berth for the Mets.

"I would prefer to spend the day off in Chicago, let these guys get some rest," he said.

Perhaps they should move up the start time... this would really suck for the Cubs.

They really should up the game time. It's get away day and it should be dry at noon.

Oh well, they won't.

It wouldn't surprise me if thursdays game replaces the Astros game as the make up for the Cubs. Seeing as I believe the Astros will be eliminated before then, and the Mets will still have a shot at the playoffs. In either case, I expect Lou would trot out the standard "scrub lineup" cause his obligations to the Cubs are of higher priority to the org, then playing the the last game with his regular because of the "integrity of the game" cliche.

I hope they play it tomorrow, but it wouldn't surprise me if the eventually switch the Astros game with the Mets as themake up..

Boy, Murphy's Law sure loves the Cubs. Every bloody year we're in playoff contention this happens. 2003 we got lucky avoiding Hurricane Isabella twice. 2004 we had an entire series postponed with the Marlins because of one of those 4 storms that hit Florida, I don't remember anything last year, and now this year. We've taken care of our part, getting HFA throughout the playoffs, now I hope the Astros hold up their end and get eliminated from the wild card so that game doesn't need to be played. God, I just hope that this game gets played, the Cubs win, and never have to go to Shea Stadium again - unless it's in the playoffs and we got a 2-0 lead and are getting ready to go for the jugular and knock the Mets out of the playoffs and avenge 1969 once and for all

If this one gets postponed, I hope either the Mets or Brewers tank the final three games and make this game a non-issue as well. I wouldn't mind the Cubs finishing the season with 160 games.

There's more than one series that could be affected, not to mention the Mets final series with the Marlins

could the playoffs get pushed back?

You know MLB won't move the start time up, that makes too much sense...

Well, if we have to play that Monday I hope the 2008 Iowa Cubs try really hard to win. :-))

I agree. This is worse for the teams like NY and Hou that will have to put out their best pitchers and players if make up games are necessary. I know Houston is like 2% likely to make it matter, but man, can you imagine how burnt those team's bullpens could be heading into Wednesday?

At least the Cubs can sit anyone of consequence if they have to play.

Does anyone know how the rules pertain to who the Cubs can send to NY on Monday for a make up game? I assume the players have to be on the 40 man roster so assuming this, here would be a decent lineup to send.

Pie CF

Fontenot 2B

McGee 3B

Fox 1B

Hoffpauir LF

Hill C

Cedeno SS

Fuld RF

Guzman P

Bench: Ward, Blanco, Johnson, Fukudome, Edmonds (these guys only play if there is an injury or pinch hitting duty only)

Wuertz BP

Ascanio BP

Pignatello BP

Petrick BP

Who stays home: The entire postseason pitching staff, Lee, DeRosa, Theriot, Rameriz, Soriano, and Soto.

There should be no reason why the Cubs should send any everyday players at all.

Once again, does anyone know the roster rules?

We can just kick the Brewers arse the next three games, then not have to worry about it one way or another.

Unless the Mets also lose and Houston wins three in a row. :D

Or what if it all works out so both that Astros game AND the Mets game have to be made up? That would really suck.

Yup. We've got 2 of the biggest market teams playing each other, let's play through a storm so that we can show the game in prime time, even though the forecast is clear from noon-3

If it rains as much as it might for the Mets/Cubs and Mets/Marlins and than their are one game playoffs they are going to have to move the playoffs back. They really should consider this and just move the games up but that would really screw the fans who would be going tonight.

MLB has really done a poor job planning ahead these past few weeks, haven't they? Obviously with Ike, and now this. Why would they not move this game up to an afternoon game? I just don't get it.

Because Selig is an incompetent commissioner. I really wish they could get someone like the NFL had with Tagliabue. The NFL makes timely decisions, and it also isn't dominated by the big market teams like MLB usually is. The NFL also holds their refs accountable, while it takes an act of God before MLB will do the same with their umps. MLB's fan base is also dwindling compared to the NBA or NFL over the last 10 years. I like baseball better, but even as a baseball homer, I can't help but recognize that the NFL is a far superior product and a better run league when compared to MLB. I don't see how anyone could view Selig's tenure as anything short of a complete and total disaster. Yet, the owners love him. I don't understand.

Nightmare scenario?

Cubs/Mets get rained out. Most of Mets/Fish get rained out. After the conclusion of Mets/Fish series(played after Sunday), Brewers are a 1/2 game up in the WC over both the Mets and Astros, forcing the Cubs to go to HOU to play one game(good luck I-Cubs), then to NY to play another( good luck I-Cubs). After all that have a 3-way tie for the WC, forcing a playoff, which I have no clue how the scenarios work so...

ex:

Hou plays at MIL, winner goes to NY. Cubs/Phils/Dodgers wait around until they know who they're playing. Start the NLDS on Wednesday( even Bud's not THAT stupid).

I hope to God it doesn't happen, but in a sick twisted way, Bud deserves it.

More likely than not, there will be a rain out Friday but the Mets will be able to play Saturday and a DH Sunday. I don't think it will be that big of an issue.

On a side note, I heard Timmy Kurkjian talking about how "this is what makes baseball so great". He says this every time there's some odd quirk. How in the world is this what makes baseball so great? Baseball is a great sport, rainouts don't make it better.

On the plus side, this might be good from the perspective of the people who didn't want the Mets to get a look at Harden before the playoffs.
