"It is astounding to me that Lou Piniella lets his ace, coming off rotator cuff problems, stay out there for 110 pitches, no matter how effective he is."

Ok, so you have a pitcher working on a no-hitter after 8, showing no ill effects from the problem(s), and lighting the gun up all night - who either just hit, or hasn't yet, 100 pitches - but you want him pulled?? I can only shake my head at the idiocricy of that statement.

Oh, and then he says that...

"With Zambrano, Harden, and Dempster, the Cubs have a top 3 rotation that is unmatched in the NL and makes them the team to beat in the National League."

Uhhh, welcome back to mid-July, Steve.

It's also astounding that he traded Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano. But who's counting?

One of the more impressive things about his performance is the relatively low pitchcount for the game, 110 pitches for a complete game no hitter? pretty bad ass

Jim Duqette.

Details... :wink:

Not as impressive as you think. Because it is a no-hitter he saw very few batters (about as many as a normal 7 inning start).

You're right. Phillips had his own Kazmir for Zambrano. Deals like AJ Burnett for Al Leiter, Jason Isringhausen for Billy Taylor, Melvin Mora for Mike Bordick, and Jason Bay for Steve Reed.

Add Ken Rosenthal to the list of idiots.

Hurricane Ike is the real reason for Z's no-hitter.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8565620/

Still, no one should dismiss the possible effects of Ike on the Astros, who spent the past several days worrying about their families and homes, then were assigned the privilege of playing a "home" series against the Cubs at a neutral site about 90 miles north of Chicago.

I don't mean make light of the devastation in Houston caused by Ike, but cmon... if you really are a playoff team, you absolutely can not use this excuse as to why you just got no-hit, very near perfect game thrown on your azzes. I suppose it was such a huge benefit to the Cubs to get thrown out of their scheduled rhythm while Selig/MLB and McLain took their slow arse time in finally picking a site and times to play these games? =;

If you want to pull the "'home field away from home'" excuse if the Cubs won, fine... but don't make that the reason for near perfect, no-hitter game. Astros got shut down by a very rare pitching performance... wouldn't have mattered location the game was played at last night.

Cubs won and Z threw the no-hitter only because the game was held in Milwaukee. Just ask Drayton McLane and Cecil Cooper;

Driving rainstorms didn’t stop Cubs fans from filling the first two decks of the stadium, and all of the Astros’ worst fears – manager Cecil Cooper expressed his dissatisfaction with Major League Baseball before the game – came true.

“This was a home game for the Cubs,” Astros owner Drayton McLane said.

McLane's only has himself to blame. With the advance notice he had, these games could have been played in Florida or Atlanta over the weekend. But he chose to cling to some misguided hope that somehow the games could be played in Houston. It's all McLane's fault, not MLB.

But they are in Wisconsin, so I'm sure someone could come up with a good cheese to go along with their whine.

Sweet. Back-to-back no-hitters!

Its sad that people are saying that about Z's game. Its even more sad that a great portion of the fan base didn't get to watch it. I was lucky enough to watch the game on the Houston feed on Direct TV. Z was as good as I've seen him from the get go. His velocity was up and he had great movement but not wild. The pitches he threw for balls were real close for the most part and I thought he got squeezed quite a few times. What really impressed me was his composure. He looked real calm out there (for him) and was taking his time even in the 9th. We all knew it was only a matter of time before he did, he's been real close before. It couldn't have come at a better time.

Amid all of the "away game being a home game" garbage, no one seems to be talking about the fact that Z's arm is more than okay, or that he shut down a team that came in as winners of 14 of there last 15 games.

I liked Lou's comment that he was going to send Larry out to the mound to remove Z if need be.

Kruk is ranting again tonight about how he is surprised that the Cubs let Zambrano finish the game and then he went into how unfair it was to the Astros to have to leave their families and go play in Milwaukee, as if their families were in imminent danger and in need of protection. I'm really tired of hearing about it. They had 2 days off and the storm was over with when they left for Milwaukee. I'm assuming if any of those players had family members injured or in need of help, then they wouldn't have played, so stop making excuses for them.

Usually families are not allow to bring families on the plan in September, but Selig approved of it because of the situation. And I believe 10 players (or maybe it was just 10 family members in all) families traveled with the team. So people making these excuses for the Astros need to stop. If the Astros would have won these two games, they would been praised for "fighting through the adversity", but seeing as badly they were beaten, it's like "well they DID have to travel and leave their families behind."

The media can't have it both ways you either praised them for fighting through the adversity or you criticized the situations. You can't have both.
