June 1st Rotoworld:

Mark Prior will undergo shoulder surgery this week and miss the rest of the season.

Prior was found to have a tear in the capsule of his right shoulder a couple of weeks. He initially opted for rehab over surgery, but that plan didn't last for long. There won't be any idea about his status for 2009 until after the surgery is performed.

The Pads signed him to a one year deal, right? I wonder if anyone will give him a chance next year.

Im fairly positive somebody will give him a minor league deal at least.

Per CBS Sportsline:

"When Padres team doctors Heinz Hoenecke and Jan Fronek performed the latest surgery, they found a completely different injury when the capsule in Prior's shoulder had been torn away from the bone. It is called HAGL -- a humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligaments. "Obviously it's frustrating," Prior said. "I was throwing the ball well and I was going in the right direction. I didn't really expect this. One pitch, and it came out of nowhere." Prior will try to return at some point in 2009, but he is not worth owning in any Fantasy format at this time.

(Updated 06/08/2008)."

I read elsewhere that an HAGL is extremely rare in baseball players, and that it's almost automatically considered a career-threatening injury. That it happened to Prior pretty much seals that deal, IMO.

Someone at the game Friday asked me if I knew what happened with Prior. I had to tell him I didn't know. Pretty sad news.

We should try to sign him in the offseason to that minor league deal :)

I bet my brother is pissed now that he has his autographed Mark Prior jersey hanging from his wall that he begged me to buy him for Christmas a couple years ago. I tried to warn him and say that he may not pitch for the Cubs in a year or two, but noooo, Mark Prior is a God

homer bailey likes louisville better than cincinnati. he's on a team that won their division, has a chance of winning the international league (maybe even the bricktown showdown) and dusty baker is not his manager. he's got no shot of having a successful career in cincinnati as long as dusty is there.

It is truly sad what has happened to this guy. He has to be included in the talk of players like Don Gullett and Mark Fidrych.
I've made the Fidrych comparison before. I hadn't thought of Gullett before, but he's another good comparison. Another comparison from the same era (a teammate of Gullett's, in fact) is Gary Nolan.

I've tended to not have much sympathy for him, mostly because of the media reports that teammates/fans thought he was a jerk and teammates thought he was a nancy.

So, I don't really care what happens to him.

I don't recall reading anything about teammates thinking he was a jerk. I know reporters didn't like him because he was actually smarter than most of them.

As for teammates thinking he was a nancy, well they sure showed him, a real tough guy woulda pitched without a functioning shoulder. Sandy Vagina.

When people ask me if I know what happened to Prior, I tell them that Dusty broke him.
I'd like to see Cincy trade for Bedard, and watch the fireworks when Dusty tried to get him to throw more than 100.
