In this epic clash of titans, we have:

Mr. I like to walk the baby stroller around dilapidated buildings - JASON MARQUIS

Vs.

Mr. Glove on hat wearing man - John Lannan

The current Nationals team OPS over 1.000 against Jason Marquis and John Lannan shut out the Cubs back in April, but he is coming off his worst start of the season against the Rockies. Payback is in order against the hapless Nats. Cubs go out and win the first game 9-5.

I want to see this offense humming like a well-oiled machine again. Especially since I'll be at the game.

With the Twins beating the Angels yesterday, the Cubs now have the best record in the majors all to themselves.

Your starter descriptions remind me of the "real men of genius" commercials. I like the theme.

Gonna miss yet another one. This sucks.

What doesn't suck is that Marquis is going to torch these AAAA clowns and the hitters will sacrifice a bucket of KFC before the game to wake up bats. Cubs win 9-2.

Jason Marquis day! Who knows what's going to happen! The guys the Nats will lineup will be hitting about .400 as a group against Jason. Lannan completely shutdown the Cubs the only time he faced him.

If Marquis is anything, he's inconsistent. 22 starts, 9 quality, 5 disasters. The one thing he has been consistent at is shutting down poor offenses, and Washington will send out the game's worst. Against the bottom 6 teams in OPS (Wash, SF, Pit, SD, LA, Cin), Marquis has thrown 54 1/3 innings, allowing just 48 hits and 18 ERs, for an ERA of 2.98, with 6 of his 9 QS. Throw in an outing vs. the now horrid Braves offense last time out and a game earlier vs. the Rockies with Holliday, Hawpe and Tulo on the DL. Marquis, against the rest of the league, has been beat up to the tune of a 6.15 ERA.

Lannan has been dominant on the road with a 2.40 ERA and .234 BAA. He is an extreme groundball pitcher. However, he is entering uncharted territory in innings pitched, and it is starting to show. He's walked 3 or more in 6 of his last 8 starts, after doing so twice in 11 May/June starts. He walked 9 in his last 2 starts. Cubs can put the ball in play against this guy even with 2 strikes, so they need to be patient and make him get the ball up. Low ball hitters should have a good day for both teams.

When I looked at the homestand, this was the one game I thought might be a loss. Well we already lost our game for the homestand so you better win today. This guy is a solid pitcher.

My work day today got bumped back by five hours. Now my four busiest hours of shift, during which I'm lucky to get a bathroom break, will begin just before this game. I had better come home to victory, Cubs :club:

If the Cubs defeat the Nats today, the Nats will officially be unable to finish with a better record than the Cubs this year.

So with a win we clinch not worst record in the NL?

That's been clinched mathematically earlier this week. They just clinch not worse than the Nationals. Even now, for the Nationals to finish with a better record than the Cubs, they have to finish the year 34-0 while the Cubs finish the year 0-35. That would put them at 79-83, which wouldn't be the worst record in the NL.

Not to nitpick, but 0-35 the rest of the way would put the Cubs at 78-84. ;)

I mean to nitpick, but "them" refers to the Nats.

Posted this in Cubs Discussions as well.....

Jason Marquis turned 30 on Thursday. Whether he also has turned a corner in his pitching career might be on display today but probably will take at least another month to determine.

What he does know is that at this point in his career and his life, he wasn't willing to keep banging his head against a brick wall trying in vain to fix the same problem that plagued him each of the last two seasons. And he wasn't willing to do it alone.

Trying to break the cycle that has seen him fall off dramatically in the second halves of seasons, Marquis sought the help of a sports psychologist over the winter and kept the mental work going through occasional contact during the season.

''I'm not saying I've got it licked. I don't say I've got it figured out,'' he said. ''But I feel like I'm better than where I was the last two years. I don't think you'll ever have it figured out. You've always got to keep pushing and working to get better and stay on top of it.''

Nice to at least see he's not being as hard headed as he's been portrayed and is trying to find ways to improve.

It's raining pretty bad right now in the westburbs..

It doesn't seem like it will delay the game more than half an hour in the worst case scenario, though. And most of it will miss to the west.

Gametime delayed an hour, or somewhere during the middle?
