I hearby promise to dedicate at least 3 posts in the NLCS game threads to our failure to have a winning record against the Nationals this year.

If I remember, I'll contribute too.

Actually, I probably won't be here for playoff game threads.... they would drive me absolutely nuts and I'll probably be sitting on a friend's couch or at a bar or something.

Most of it isn't complaining about the Cubs. Most of it is people complaining about the complaining.

Apparently you're not supposed to point out when they suck. Who knew?

or maybe some people just enjoy posting in game threads and are tired of them being overrun by irrational fools who can't keep the big picture in mind when watching the cubs lose one game.

What people seem to be forgetting is that the Cubs have a very tough in September. There is a very limited amount of games left against crappy teams like the Nationals and Reds, so losing 2 of the first 4 games of this homestand is not "no big deal". This homestand is where we were supposed to extend our lead. Now we have to win the next 2 just to make it a "eh" homestand.

Between the Mets, Phillies, and the Cubs, the Brewers dont exactly have a cake walk in September.

If the Cubs play to their records they have against their September opponents, they'll go 14-11 in September. In which case the Brewers will have to play like .750 ball for 5 weeks to catch us.

I just got home from work. As if seeing the score wasn't enough of a shock, the next two things I see are video clips linking to Alfonso Soriano stealing home... and Derrek Lee hitting a homerun. Now I'm convinced this is all just some sick joke. What really happened??

Cubs won 7-2. Marquis pitched decently, and the bullpen pitched 3 solid innings.

If only that were the truth.

the game wasn't actually played, it's all been an elaborate hoax

This was probably Dempster's idea. Canadians.

Ok...if you're Jason Marquis, and you've sucked for about 20 straight years, maybe when you get a 4-0 lead you just start throwing strikes and make the other team hit the ball? A thought, perhaps?

I'm glad I missed this one.

What happened? I sat in the rain for 2 hours getting drunk, wondering if there was going to be a doubleheader on Saturday. Then the rain stopped and they started playing. Looked good for awhile, happy. Then Marquis started sucking to high heaven, so Lou puts Cotts in there. Cotts then serves up a granny ball to that little punk who probably still can't believe he hit it, and we were all like "WAT?".

Then more runs, more BS from various bozo pitchers. I left in the 8th and went and got a hot dog.

Ridiculous waste of my time.

That's what happened.

But other than THAT, did you enjoy your day at the ballpark??

Did Marquis start falling behind the hitters when he fell apart?

He walked the bases loaded.

Technically true, but it doesn't paint the exact picture. He gave up a hit in the 6th, then walked 2 guys to load the bases. Walking the bases loaded implies that he walked all 3 runners, which he didn't do. He then got a sac fly, then another hit. Then he was pulled (having given up 2 runs and 2 runners on) and Cotts let both inherited runners score.

Yep, that would be falling behind! Was he missing by a lot or did he suddenly get squeezed after getting calls he had earlier?

All 4 balls to Guzman were just a little bit off the outside corner. He didn't miss by much, but he wasn't getting squeezed either.

2 of the ones to Zimmerman were close, and the other 2 were way out of the zone.

From watching Marquis, it seems like he doesn't want to give in to the middle (close too) of the plate until he struggles and then it's too late. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems to me he works his own way and then when he starts to struggle, puts it down the middle or continues to walk batters. Does he usually give up big innings and not 1 or 2 at a time?

I haven't looked up the stats myself, but Len and Bob talk every start about his propensity to give up the big inning after cruising for a while. I do agree with you Cuse on that. It appears that he is comfortable and just making pitches..but when he gets thrown out of that, he gets cute and tries to be perfect with every pitch, which causes him to fall behind and put more runners on. Then he gets afraid of walking the next hitter, so he lays one in there that gets pounded. Typically, as soon as he gets out of his big inning, he returns to cruising along.

What drives me crazy is when a pitcher nibbles on the 7-9 guys and then goes middle on the good hitters. Challenge the bottom of order guys more or hitters like Guzman.
