In Detroit he was complaining about a lack of playing time, which he called "a platoon" despite the fact that he wasn't in a platoon.

When Jim Leyland explained, through the media, what a platoon was, Sheffield said that that was just how he felt.

Sucks, old, expensive, complains, AND doesn't know what a platoon is. No.

Big no on Sheffield.

I wonder if the Rays will take a flyer on him.

As long as the Cards and Brewers dont take any flyers.

Let the Brewers have him. He doesn't have a place to place with Braun, Hart, and Fatty playing LF, RF, and 1B. He is likely to just hurt their team

I'm kinda guessing Sheff isn't welcome back in Milwaukee.

Oh yeah, I forgot about his unfavorable exit from there the first time around. Still, I could see the Cards picking him up ala Larry Walker in 2004, especially depending on Ankiels return.

What happened with him in Milwaukee?

Similar tothe Manny/Boston situation, they accused him of not really trying because he wanted out, which he was vocal about.

But then again, I could be confusing it with his Padres exit. I know it happened with him once early in his career.

IIRC, he hated the idea of playing in small market/abysmal team Milwaukee. I think he relied on his uncle (Dwight Gooden) as a mentor and really wanted the big market glitz that Gooden had in NY.

This was when Sheffield came up as a shortstop. I think he was the reason the Brewers moved Yount from SS to CF.

All that's happened is that he's been placed on waivers... almost every player from every team will have been put on waivers at some point by the end of this month... including guys like DLee, Aramis, and Z.

This means nothing.

What possible benefit would the Cubs have for placing Z on waivers?

teams do it to cover someone else they want to sneak through waivers

O.K., thanks.

Not necessarily. If someone like Z hit waivers and someone claimed him, obviously he'd be pulled back.

You can be darned sure that if someone puts a claim in on Sheff, he's as good as gone.

I'd love to see the Cards take a flier on him and have it backfire on them royally. Now that Dunn's gone though, any chance Dusty talks Jocketty into picking him up? I could Dusty being all over this. "The kids need a mentor. Who else are they going to watch from the bench and learn from? Corey?"
