Well, the Cubs won the one game that I thought they might lose to the dirty birds, so here I am starting my fourth consecutive game thread.

Saturday's game will feature Todd Wellemeyer (8-4, 4.01)

VS.

Carlos Zambrano (12-4, 2.76)

This match up looks favorable, especially since Welly has been getting worse as the season has progressed. But this could be the one that bites the Cubs in the arse, so let's put the hammer down (some more Edmonds homers would be satisfying). Ome more win in this series, and the Cards' division chances will be just about toast.

Go Cubs!

If the Cubs win this game, they'll have attained their best record since 1984.

Does Z have 8 more starts left? He still has an outside shot at 20 wins.

Just doing some quick math, the Cubs are 70-46, meaning there are 46 games still left. After Z's start tomorrow, 45 remaining games would mean a full 9 more times through the rotation...and that's before you consider off days in which Marquis could get skipped here or there and maybe turn the rotation over one more time...

Either way, it would appear to me that Z is on track for at least 10 more starts, including Saturday's. 20 wins seems like a stretch to me...if he keeps up the current pace, he'll end up 18-6, which would be more than fine with me!

eah,

Yeah, that would work.

Z, no b.s. Don't get too emotional. Just deal and bring home a series win buddy.

Wait, what? Are you talking about their home record?

This conflicts me....

On one hand people on THIS BOARD have said repeatedly that the W/L record for a pitcher is basically meaningless. Yet, we want to see Z possibly win 20 games. So which is it?

Personally I don't mind if he wins 20 games (as it would look good on his resume), but I prefer that Z is rested and ready to go for the playoffs, instead of pushing himself to get 20 wins.

It's a nice thing because some people (old people, idiots, to name a few) still think wins are an important stat and they take it into consideration when they vote on things like the Cy Young.

But I agree that W/L is absolutely meaningless.

the best outcome personally for me is a wellemeyer ND with 0 runs and a Z win. so if todd pitches 1 inning, has to leave and the st. louis bullpen implodes, it will be a good day.

Games over .500 overall.

Z has at least 9, probably 10 starts left. The Cubs have 46 games left, which means with a 5 man rotation (9 starts x 5 man rotation = 45 games), he is assured of at least 9 starts. If the Cubs are in need of big W in Spetember, Lou could juggle the off days and get him another start or two.

As far as this game goes, I'd say 7-3 Cubs.

No one cares about your fantasy team.

Zambrano should own. He's crushed the Cards in his career.

Re: Z- there's also the chance that Z is rested down the stretch depending on the Cubs' lead.

Lets hope this is the case. Id have no problem with Z pitching 5 innings or so in each of his last 2-4 starts

Nope. The best outcome is Wellemeyer gives up eight in the first and we cruise to a victory.

I just noticed today that the Cubs are now in the team lead for strikeouts. Not sure how long this has been going on, but the Cubs will have a chance continue the streak they've held since 2001.

Just a quick check on Cubs NL ranking on a few stats...

1st in Avg.

1st in runs

2nd in hits

5th in HRs

1st in 2Bs

1st in OBP

1st in SLG

Pitching:

2nd in ERA

1st in hits allowed

6th in BBs (not too bad I guess)

1st in Ks

2nd in saves

2nd in WHIP

That makes for a pretty damn good team.

Stupid Fox Saturday games.

If I have MLB.TV, the Gameday Audio isn't blacked out, is it? I'm stuck with the Angels-Yankees game out here.

Gameday Audio is never blacked out, regardless of any and all factors.
