I can proudly say Im the only one who was all for Edmonds as a bench bat since day 1. Granted, I had no idea how much of an impact hed have, I was just expecting a decent lefty off the bench.

Sulley wanted him as a starting CF.

thank you, thank you. it brings me no greater pleasure than to rub it in the faces of everyone who mocked me at the meet. especially you and vance. haha.

So, maybe resign Edmonds to a one or two year deal if he keeps it up?

I would. Felix Pie has thus far proven to be Corey Patterson but with a better attitude. There is nothing about Pie that tells me he'll turn the corner next year.

A lot depends on Piniella as well. If we win it this year, I'd expect Lou to retire with the ultimate feather in his cap. If that happens, Pie has a chance to win the job next year under a new manager. If we don't, Pie won't have a chance. Lou doesn't put up with mediocrity and Pie has proven to be just that.

.178/.265/.233, 103 PA's

.222/.286/.286, 70 PA's

One of these two lines is Pie at the Major League level this year. The other is Edmonds before he was cut from the Padres.

And your point is? Edmonds numbers as a Padre have no barring. Piniella doesn't care much at all what you do in a different uniform. if you perform in a Cubs uni he will play you if you don't you will ride the pine.

Jim Edmonds has 3 2 homerun games for the Cubs:

June 21st against the White Sox: 11-7 victory for the Cubs

July 31st, @ Milwaukee: 11-4 victory for the Cubs, plus he hit a Grand slam.

August 8th against the Cards: 3-2 victory for the Cubs.

So Jim Edmonds IS A CUB, because he brings the HEAVY BAT when it comes to the arch rivals....

i'd thank jim very much for his contributions, request he wear a cubs hat to his hall of fame ceremony, and let felix pie actually have a shot at the job next year.

he's been beyond amazing for the cubs this year. that doesn't change the fact that he's still pushing 40, injury prone, and has had declining numbers up until his cubs stint.

I'd take him on a one year deal in the range of 1.2 to 1.5 million dollars. My guess is he'll get a better deal elsewhere. That's around the money that we paid Ward this year. If Edmonds accepts, he's making what we paid a pinch hitter this year. If he continues to play as well as he has, he's in the outfield mix. If he drops off significantly, we could easily cut that deal. Depending on how much payroll we have to play with and what we have to spend to keep Wood and maybe Dempster or if we try to upgrade the rotation, I might even be willing to go to the 2.5 million range to keep Jim around on a one year deal.

In no way do I want to offer him significant dollars or a long term deal.

I'd be adverse to signing Edmonds to a two-year deal, which would keep him in a Cubs uniform until the age of 40, unless the second year was a club option.

A 1-year deal for a small base and then laden with incentives, say $1-1.5 million base going up to $4-5 million depending on performance would be ideal, but unlikely. His current contract pays him $8M in 2008 and it's hard to say he's not earning something close to that now. I would imagine that Hendry will have to offer something along the lines of 1-year $5-7M, unless Edmonds continues his belief that he wants to remain a Cub to stick it to the Cardinals.

I was part of the very large group of nitwits who thought Edmonds would be a colossal failure so it really doesn't matter what I think.

Edmonds has been absolutely fantastic. And if he's willing to come back for a bench spot, great.

But haven't we learned our lesson yet with this aging vets who come for cheap and put up a great year?

I'm with all of you here... When we first signed him, I saw him as nothing but a 2 week try out (which I guess he was) and thats the initial reason of hating him... I couldn't stand the thought of bringing washed up Cardinals legend to the Cubs for 2 weeks and potentially hurting the team in offensive production, defense, and possible even club house chemistry.

But I can now say I am a true Jim Edmonds fan.

Find me someone else who does that for $284,000.

It's odd seeing that bat being able to catch up to letter high FBs, after what he has done in STL the last two years. I'm glad he's in a platoon situation, it's better off for him being a 100-120 game type of player maximizing a fresher 400 PA player than drain him with the Summer grind. Once Sept. comes around as hopefully the Cubs can clinch beyond the final weekend of the season, they can give Soriano and Edmonds some extended rest with Pie and Hoffpauir.

I just want everyone to take a look at Pie's numbers in AAA this year, keeping in my mind that for about a full month he was terrible when he got sent down. He put his head on straight and got his bat back.

We need to give him another chance, I'm not up for resigning Edmonds although we probably will anyway.

I can't really argue with any of that.

When Edmonds was on the Cardinals I hated him more than just about any pro athlete ever........................I still haven't gotten used to seeing him in a Cub uniform.

While I am convinced that he is a total stroke of a person, I take my hat off to him for the way he's played since joining the Cubs.

That's exactly how I feel.

Apparently Edmonds chewed out a couple of St. Louis sport people who tried to get an interview after Friday's game.

From the Post in St. Louis.

Make no mistake, Edmonds' resentment still runs like mascara. When FSN Midwest's Brent Stover and Mike Claiborne (KTRS) approached Edmonds after the game for a quickie on-field interview that's a standard courtesy for rights holders, Edmonds refused.

"Edmonds said, 'I'm (effing) done with St. Louis TV and radio and I'm (effing) done with the Cardinals,' '' Claiborne told me.

I wonder why he was so ticked? If I were him, I would have been happy to interview and shove it right in their face.

He's probably tired of the questions concerning the Cardinals, it seems that most of the questions being asked to him are based on what he did for the Cards rather than what he is doing now individually and more importantly what the Cubs are doing as a team with the most talent and the best record in the NL. I don't think he's ever been a media favorite to begin with, I'm sure he's cordial (maybe Mr. Miles can verify this?) to the Cubs beat writers and what not and that probably isn't good enough for much of the overzealous STL media. From some of the comments within the STL media, some turned on him once he signed with the Cubs, which is idiotic given the opportunity they presented him, talented team and immediate opportunity to start. Whether or not it was the emotions spilling over after the highly energized game or a built up dislike towards STL media and LaRussa (after his comments to the media), he did appear to have some resentment towards them. He wouldn't be human if he didn't feel like sticking it to his former team.

You guys said it, the Cubs have 38 year old Jimmy Edmonds and the Cards totally got the shaft by paying a whole 900K to a guy who (in 146 games in '07 and '08) is only hitting .281 with 148 hits (29 HRs), 99 RBIs and OPSing (everyone's absolute favorite stat!) a mere .880.

And Oh the fielding difference! This goober the Cards replaced Edmonds with is fielding .977 this year. Edmonds career mark is .989 and this year he is destroying our guy with a .967 mark with the Cubs.

Biggest fault against our guy? Either his [expletive] rocket arm that has the annoying knack of bruising the catcher's hand from warning track throws or the fact that he is already 29 years old.

Yep, the Cards made a fatal error in "moving on" with this Ankiel character.

I wish Jimmy the best and the Cubs the worst. Congrats on Jimmy's success, as I said when I first joined this board, I thought you guys would come to love him.

Who the hell are you talking to with that post? Are you replying from a different thread or something?

And thanks for the donation to the Jim Edmonds fund.

Replying to this thread in general and the board's (including your) idea that Edmonds doing so well is really sticking it to the Cardinals. There's two ways you (again, a general "you" since you are so concerned with exactly who I am talking to) seem to think he can stick it to the team: 1) Hitting well directly against the Cards like yesterday (which I agree with as being the best way to "stick it to your former team") and 2) hitting well for the Cubs in general.

#2's sentiment, which you can plainly see by reading posts in any Edmonds-related thread, is not very strong at all. This is because the Cardinals themselves are doing just fine without Edmonds due to Ankiel, so the subtraction wasn't really a subtraction at all.

What exactly, then, is being shoved into the Cardinal's faces? Jimmy is doing well, but Ankiel is doing just as well if not better at a younger age. My point is that anyone trying to relate this to the Cardinals making a mistake with Edmonds or that Edmonds has really buried the Cardinals is not looking at who replaced him, a better player.

I have, to date, paid $0.00 to Jim Edmonds. Thanks for today's winning pitcher.

I have to admit that line made the Edmonds-hating Cubs fan that still resides somewhere deep inside me chuckle.

Do the Cards just cut checks every couple weeks to mail to Jim Edmonds or did they just hand deliver a big sack of cash with a dollar sign on it to 1060 W. Addison?

It would be great if that sack of cash was personally delivered by Fredbird.

I chuckled... it is quite nice knowing that the Cardinals paid Jim Edmonds to make them lose yesterday.

Then again he didn't do that awesome today :?
