So...looking ahead to this weekend

Friday:

Looper vs. Lilly

Saturday:

Wellemeyer vs. Zambrano

Sunday:

Carpenter vs. Dempster

Thoughts?

Just like in most series that match ups probably favor us.

So last time the cubs were 23 games over?

Probably 2004 sometime.

Didn't an ESPN announcer say that the other day was the first time they had been 21 games over (or whatever it was at the time) since 1969?

They ended the 1989 season 93-69, so up to 24 games over, it'll be 1989. 24 games was the high water mark for that season, though.

Before that, in 1984 they were 90-58 at one point, so up to 32 games over.

Beyond that....it's been a while (1969 high water mark was 83-51, 32 games over).

We should win the series quite easily. Carp looked good in his last start, but he's still not pitching that many pitches in a game and we can definitely get to the Cards bullpen. On paper, we should win the first 2 games quite easily.

That stat was the last time the Cubs have been 22? games over on this date of the season since 1969. Other teams since then have been that many games over at other parts of the season.

I think they were 22 over going into that slide in late September in 2004.

good, so when we win this game we'll have another thing to erase 2004 from memory. that team broke my spirit even more than the 2003 team.

A sweep would be my favorite thing since winning 4 of 5 from them in early September 2003.

Same. I still remember skipping class, sitting in my room and watching those games against the Reds wondering WTF was going on...

We couldn't score a damn run. And then the games went into extras which made them even more excruciating. I believe Prior was owning in one of them.

I remember going into the Braves series like 3 games out, hoping for double sweeps.

I think even if Carp is throwing well we can take enough pitches like we have in the past to get him out of there early. He can't be on a pitch count of more than 80 at this point so if we can get to the bullpen before the 5th, we're good.

I wish Harden was going in the series instead of Lilly. Z could go Fri, Demp on Sat, and Harden on Sunday would seem much better.

Man, Reed Johnson was such a good solid pickup. I'd love to see him back next year to platoon with Fukudome in CF.

We'll definitely re-sign him next year, probably try the platoon with Pie out again. He may not be Carlos Quentin or Josh Hamilton, but he was one hell of a pick up off the trash heap.

Just for kicks, after 32 games over .500, we go all the way back to the 1945 Cubs, who finished the year 98-56, or 42 games over.

I really doubt this year's Cubs can top that.

Watch Larussa stretch him out to 100 pitches just out of hate for the Cubs and break him again.

He's maintaining his solid numbers against lefties, and that's good enough for me. I'd rather Fukudome gets moved to center for a platoon so that a big bat can be added as a corner OFer to slide into the #3 slot and Lee hits #2 or #5.

Are there any major corner OFers (other than Manny) going FA this year?

I haven't heard much. But it would be nice to move Fuku to CF (if he's willing) and get a .900 OPS bat in RF.

If Fuku takes a leap in power next year - icing on the cake.

I take it youve given up on Pie?
